^ Agreed, it’s a bit odd to transition back to that. Just a bit of moving stuff around could make it clearer

I do like the idea that Kylo ordered their last stand to be broadcast to the entire galaxy, and then it cuts out when Luke is a badass lol.

Too bad there isn’t a Kylo line you could throw into TLJ like, “Let the galaxy witness their end.” That would be the most subtle approach.

Also, what are you going for with the shot of Aftab Ackbar?

I guess I should explain. I wanted to have more shots of aliens throughout the galaxy reacting to the video, but I couldn’t find very many that were long enough or that had neutral enough backgrounds. Then I remembered that for some reason that shot of Aftab Ackbar during the resistance briefing works really well with optical flow, meaning I could make it as long as I wanted, and because he has a relatively simple head shape I could mask him out and put him somewhere else. Problem is I don’t really know how to add light to the shot in a way that makes it look like he’s watching a bright screen, and the background inadvertently makes it look like he’s in a dungeon. But basically, the idea is that he’s in a random place far away, watching Luke’s sacrifice on a screen slightly above eye level and being inspired to join the resistance, which is when we see him next.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

Feels more like a Hux overconfidence move (especially for TLJ) to have that broadcast live only for Luke to not only walk out but to do the shoulder brush move in front of the entire galaxy.

Ah ok, that makes sense! Works in canon too since all we know is that he felt pretty down about his dad dying and then joined the Resistance at some point, so I could totally see him joining because of what Luke did

Just quietly, I think this is one of my favorite small bits of editing I’ve done so far to this film:

I like it as well. But I can already hear the “Mary Sue” comments lol.

The original never actually makes it clear who lands the hit on him. They just all open fire. Come to think of it, why didn’t they start sinking sooner? This would alleviate that minor issue.

Oh yes, I can hear them now! Look, after 5 hours of film she’s either a badass space-superhero or she’s not, right?

Come to think of it, Rey has always had absurdly good marksmanship. So it can’t hurt to be consistently absurd.

Now there need to be three extra jet troopers behind the first one in a line so that she can one-up herself.

Well, it took 3 hours and still needs a ton of work, but here’s a mockup of what my idea would look like:

This is absurdly fantastic. I LOVE this idea so much!! As a cold open, does that mean that you have this, and then hard cut to the Star Wars title and crawl? Because that would be an incredible way to kick this off

I like this idea quite a bit (and I low-key wish something like this would have happened with TROS to really signify it being the last movie in the series).

Anyways, my only critique is to maybe polish it up a little and try to use some footage that’s more obscure/hasn’t been used in the movies before.

I mean, if you’ve got clips that work better that you can think of, tell me. I’ve honestly had a lot of trouble finding usable footage.

The shot of the old woman and man watching the scene at 1:37 looks pretty good to me, as well as the Scooby-do looking alien shot at 1:46 that seems to be another take of the one you re-used from the film.

You could start with an establishing shot like at 2:05 and cut to the final shot at 2:12, masking out the window to place a viewscreen. Then have two aforementioned shots of aliens looking over at it.

You’d still need to figure out a way to incorporate the children into the scene, either by masking them out of the obviously exterior environment and placing them into the corner of the high-class room, or by indicating that there are multiple screens throughout the city which are playing the same thing.

Maybe try & mix in a camera drone or two somewhere, possibly floating next to one of the walker heads before it fires? I keep thinking of those little drones hovering next to the Mos Eisley troopers in ANH.

How would I re-edit TRoS? Well, for starters, I’d throw out the concept of force healing since it pretty much came out of nowhere. Then, I’d have Palpatine kill Kylo by throwing him into the pit. Lastly, I’d have Rey proclaim, “Just Rey,” at the end of the film, and her arc would come full circle.

“The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.”

If you take out the Force healing then Palpatine can’t kill Kylo because Rey would have killed him first on Endor.

I guess you can argue with that.

Ha! Didn’t see your earlier comment before coming back & responding to the prior one. Wasn’t trying to prove you wrong, but this did legitimately make me laugh.

One thing I’ve been thinking of is what Ben could do post-Kylo if an edit were to have him survive Exegol. I’ve seen ideas of him going off as a Caine-in-Kung-Fu-type nomad to try & atone for his actions, but that doesn’t seem like enough of a benefit for all the trouble of redeeming him. Even if he straight-up defected right after Exegol, yes he wouldn’t part of the First Order’s arsenal, but that still seems like missing an opportunity.

What if he went back & tried to shut down or de-escalate the First Order from within? As far as they know, he’s still Supreme Leader Kylo Ren. A good-guy Ben masquerading as Kylo could do a lot of damage to First Order operations by making some ‘disasterous’ orders before somebody figured out what was going on or his generals just rebelled against him. Obviously you couldn’t show much of this in an edit, but I think you could seed the idea given the right circumstances (like using foreign language dubbing & rewritten subtitles to change some dialogue).

Visually:

  • A shot of Kylo’s ship heading back to a Star Destroyer.
  • The shot of him in full Ren gear in a hallway before turning & going through a doorway. (TROS 1:07:15)
  • Ben walking around the table at the First Order staff meeting (20:22 or so, after the shot of Boolio’s head on the table)
  • Let that scene play out for the most part. Again, the dub allows dialogue re-writing but they are doing the same general bickering. And you made need to do some judicious cutting depending on if Hux or Pryde are alive or not in your edit at this point. But even if you just use General Conjurors & Soothsayers, it could be enough.
  • When Ben goes for the force choke, cut out that guy getting choked & lifted. I go right back to the shot of Pryde talking about how great that fleet would be (moved it up a bit) & Hux’s reaction.
  • Cut back to push-in shot on Ben soon as the choking General is out of frame. He’s about to give them all new orders.
  • Cut from that to Hux & Pryde on the bridge right before Chewie is brought in (42:40).
  • Cut to two shots of Ben looking out of a Star Destroyer window from the start of the TLJ extended incursion deleted scene (scar will need to be fixed).

Basically this is Ben going in and Jedi mind-tricking his command staff into following his obviously destructive orders. The bit with Hux & Pryde should help sell the idea a little more. (Ben staring out the window is where I cut to Rey looking in his direction from the Tatooine shot of her looking at Luke/Leia force ghosts - her smile is one of support & approval).

Typing all this out makes me realize its probably less broadly applicable than I’d originally thought because of dialogue replacement, but hopefully the general idea can spark an insight for someone.

If I have time this week I’ll try mocking this up.
