As long as Obi beats him good again and before vanishing for a second time tells him, “You still have much to learn, Darth.”

Hahahaha no

It shouldn’t be easy for Vader but it shouldn’t be easy for Obi-Wan. Both should be very powerful, with Vader having an edge in power but Obi-Wan has the edge in terms of wits.

Perhaps Vader will be too strong, and Obi-Wan will have to fake his death? That could explain why Vader and Tarkin were so sure of Obi-Wan’s death. ROTS implies Vader knows Obi-Wan is alive… he just walked away, so Vader knows he’s out there. But a faked death at the end of the series could permanently get Vader off his trail and leave Obi-Wan to focus on protecting Luke.

And although it’s not 20 years in the making, 10 years in the making is still a lot for an epic duel.

I’m assuming Hayden will play an unmasked Vader in some scenes - sitting in his meditation pod all scarred and bitter…

Yeah, I’m very anxious about the new Obi-Wan vs Vader duel. It’s not even speculation at this point, it’s literally the main thing they’re using to sell the show. I just hope they do it in a way that makes sense for the story and characters.

Here’s hoping for a force vision fight. Drug Old Ben and send him on a trip.

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

I get you, something like this then:

I’m actually really worried about the hints of a pre-ANH Vader vs Obi Wan rematch. Many people seem to have conveniently forgotten the line “when I left you, I was but the learner; now I am the master”. A duel between them would be the definition of breaking the canon for fan service.

If Obi-Wan duels Vader in a force vision like Luke’s, as part of some kind of trial for him, it would add to and enhance the duel on the Death Star. If it really is a proper encounter, it will make that original duel less significant. Either way you get a fight between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi, but with very different effects.

I trust Deborah Chow, but there’s so much unknown about what this show will do. Every time I think about this, it eats at me more. Help!

That line was vague though. He didn’t say “When I left you, I was burning next to a pit of lava while screaming about how much I hate you.” There were no direct lines about what exactly their last confrontation was, so there could potentially be room for another duel in between there.

My comment about hoping they do it in a way that makes sense was mostly just directed at character development. If they can flesh out the characters, maybe explaining their attitudes in the OT as well, that would be great. But if it’s just a duel for a duel’s sake, that’s no good.

Yeah, but I just can’t imagine Vader ever describing himself as a “learner”, unless he’s talking about the time he didn’t have the suit, trying to cover for the fact he was humiliated and defeated on Mustafar. It also makes the ANH duel less powerful if they’ve met in between. I agree though that it could potentially be done well, I think if a duel would happen it would definitely be a meaningful part of the story and character development Obi will have in the show.

Also as I said, why not just go for a force vision of some kind?

Luke and Vader had several pre-ESB encounters in Legends and current canon, and while some very pretty dumb, some worked quite well. The new canon one I think managed to work around to quite well, and I think Chow and whoever is writing the new series is well aware of how “risky” this is so I’m not to worried about it. For all we know Vader might not even know its Obi-Wan, maybe he’ll be posing as someone else, or despite the dramatic “rematch of the century” statement it could be something that’s over quite quickly (i.e. Obi-Wan is forced to escape quite quickly or something ends up separating them). There’s a lot of ways this can go.

And lets not forget that SW continuity is already filled with minor continuity errors, strange coincidences and semi-retcons. Such as Ben telling Luke Yoda trained him (which is technically true), Ben not recognizing Artoo & Threepio in ANH, or Leia somehow remembering her mother despite Padmè dying in Ep. 3.

I just hope George Lucas and Filoni are involved in some capacity.

If my fellow original trilogy purists don’t mind a rematch, maybe I can get over it too.

I’d be more worried if this mini series promised something less than epic. I’m all for another Obi-Wan vs Vader duel and more onscreen insights into Vader’s mission, but what excites me more is the possibility of smaller duels and skirmishes with a posse Vader’s Jedi Hunters (the knights of ren we never got). I just hope they give each of these hunters enough development and characteristics to be both menacing and memorable.

Hell, throw some bounty hunters into the mix.

I think people are reading too much into a line. “When I left you” doesn’t match very well the Mustafar encounter anyway, since Obi-wan did the leaving. It could easily be interpreted as Anakin leaving the teachings of the Jedi, having failed to gain mastery in their ways, but he’s now a master of the ways of the Sith.

I just want to hear Anakin ask Obi-Wan why he left him to burn the way he did. I want some passionate dialogue from both sides about everything that went wrong.

Exactly. And there are already so many other contradictions in Obi-Wan’s ANH lines when you compare them to what is actually depicted in the prequels. I’ve accepted those contradictions, so a few more won’t bother me as long as they are telling a good story.

My only real question is: who will have the high ground this time?

Since this series predates Christensen’s casting in AOTC I’d almost believe the Obi-Wan line was a reference to it, but its probably just a really ironic coincidence.

Considering the time period in which the series will be set it’s very likely that we’ll get to see some of the Inquisitors which has now appeared in Rebels, Fallen Order and various comic book stories. We might get to see familiar characters like the Grand Inquistor in live-action, though probably some new ones that can be killed off by Obi-Wan and/or whoever he ends up allying himself with. We might even get to see some live-action Purge Troopers.

Yup…already totally geeking out about those prospects. Never watched the cartoons, so I’m more familiar with some of those from playing Fallen Order which was the best thing since Dark Forces 2 and KotOR imo.
