The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 272

I’ve been scouring the eBay “broken or for parts” section to snag a decent MacBook Pro that doesn’t have a hard drive and/or working display.
If anyone would like to contribute, I won’t say no. I’m going to get the least expensive option I can find either way.

This thing will get done, one way or another. The current state of the audio streams is preserved in a master file output, and restoring my system to new hardware will let me pick up from there, even if I potentially no longer have access to FCP7. (It just might be balls to work with audio on any future changes to make.)

My computer did boot just now, so I’m going to export the current state of the video feed to ProRes just in case.

So that someone like poppasketti could take over, even in the worst case.

Aaaaaand it’s gone again.

Hmm, it seems the pattern is to unplug my computer and then try to boot up some hours later.

I don’t know. I bid on a 2013 MBP with a broken screen so we’ll see what happens. I’ll try to keep these to a minimum as they aren’t really SW related.

Hey Hal, that’s rough. I’m so sorry. Did the video stream get exported? I’ll PM you.

No, because the drive I was going to encode it onto doesn’t appear anywhere (not diskutil or anywhere) after an abrupt disconnect. No data was lost, since it was recently acquired. It appears to be broken. Not a big deal in itself, just means I don’t have anywhere to export the video as ProRes like that. (I’d encode final product streams directly from Compressor anyway.) I tried troubleshooting for a while but it seems dead. It’s my own fault!

I’m not about to delete my Time Machine backup right now in order to do it, but it should be no issue to restore from it. In the process of troubleshooting I had to reboot and it did it once, but the second time put it in its opossum state.

If anyone does wish to float me just a few dollars, feel free to PM me, as anything will help this succeed. To be clear, any money changing hands is intended for hardware with which to edit, not for the edit as such or anything else.

I’m not gonna grab it and head to Hawaii, just getting a ~$200-250 7-9 year old Mac to get back up and running.

JEDIT: Oh my goodness, thank you to the five of you who PM’d me already about this.

I hope you get enough money for a new/old Computer. I wrote you a PM as well. I was a lurker for a long time here but now it’s time to stand up! Let’s save this project!

And just a little bit off topic: In this thread someone made the suggestion to include the RoS-Trailer-Music in this cut. It didn’t work in TRoS but I was able to include it in my TLJ cut.
Here are some samples:

Holy crap, you guys. Eight of you chipped in and raised about $232.

I bid on and won a 2014 MBP with a busted screen for just under that amount! So I think I’ll just pick up an enclosure for my current internal drive so I can dual-boot the new machine and have access to FCP7 for anything I may need going forward.

No more donations; we got it! I’m touched by the generous outpouring from you all. Onward, then!

I think this is the wrong thread.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

So I just watched the workprint. Wow. I absolutely hated TRoS when I saw it in cinema - there were just soo many moments that were confusing, nonsensical, plain bad craftsmanship or going against established canon. So I didn‘t expect a whole lot from the edit, but hey: you actually managed to make an enjoyable Star Wars movie out of this mess! The movie flows a whole lot better, most of the facepalm moments are gone (there are still horses riding on a star destroyer, but what can you do?), and apart from one dialogue early on that sounded like it was cut together (might have been like that in the original) I never thought I was watching a fan-edited film.

Tl;dr: Good job, Hal!

Seems Ascendant so far in its current state has already resolved the movies glaring issues shown in this vid 😁

I know you were able to get a new-to-you computer, to be able to continue using FCP7, but if you export an XML, not only would that work with Premiere Pro, which is very similar in functionality and GUI, but it would also work in DaVinci Resolve, which is free. Just putting it out there if you want a faster app that can take advantage of more than 4GB of RAM at a time.

Thanks for that tip, I’ll see what I end up doing for the future. I’m not sure I’d trust an xml export to capture everything about this project though!

No worries; I shouldn’t have a problem booting from the old drive and carrying on for the purposes of this project. I might play with the Hobbit sometime later on if I want to learn FCPX or DaVinci of what have you.

Currypuff, thanks for that feedback. What line are you referring to? I remind you that the vast majority of the real creative ideas and energy have come from others here and that I’ve just been the assembler and executor of most of it. And thank goodness!

Muffy, I’ll check that video out sometime.

Don’t, it’s by some Neo-Nazi idiot I know about. I remember his Steven Universe review decayed into a deranged anti-Semitic rant halfway though, so I would probably avoid him.

Yeah, a quick scroll through his previous videos should tell you everything you need to know.

Hi there. There are nearly 7,000 replies in this thread. I apologize if this has already been addressed however, I’m showing my boyfriend tRoS for the first time, and I would like to him to see the entirety of the theatrical release, with the only alteration being the addition of Jonh’s outstanding Force Ghosts edit. Is this available in high quality anywhere? Just the normal film + force ghosts?

If not, would it be possible to make a quick edit as such? I would be outstandingly grateful.

Thank you so very much and do let me know. michaelrahbar@gmail.com

P.S. Also, one of the commenters above called out and condemned an anti-semitic rant; thank you!

As it’s only a visual change to one scene you desire, it might be better to download that clip and cut it in over your own BluRay rip. It’s kind of a lot to have someone pause their edit to export a big file and transfer it over for you… especially when Hal is having some technical difficulties with his computer to maintain his NLE.

If you wanna message me privately, I can maybe walk you through how to get started on doing this for yourself, getting free editing software, etc.

er… okay guys, I only mentioned it as watching it only showcased all issues we all agree were in the theatical version, I personally was only interested what was in the vid itself…

I know, but you could have linked to a YouTube rant that wasn’t made by a noted member of the alt-right. There are a bunch of YouTube rant videos about this movie out there, surely it wouldn’t be that hard.

But we’re getting off topic here. I agree that Hal’s edit fixes most of the issues I had with the movie. The only thing I still don’t like is Rey being a Palpatine, so I’m still waiting for the nobody version to fix that.
