I don't think Revenge Of The Sith is as good as everyone says it is.

I personally think revenge of the sith is not as good as everyone in the SW community makes it seem to be. Dont get me wrong it is 100% the best out of the prequel trilogy. But still suffers from the same problems and phantom menace and attack of the clones. Also it seems to be when people when people give reasons why ROTS is a great movie they seem to mention the last 30 mins of the film. What do you think?

Great thread to discuss it. I find it really interesting how ROTS has become more and more popular over the years, and I regularly see people acting like it’s hands-down the best Star Wars film. It’s such a contrast to even a few years ago.

I think most of it is down to a younger generation growing up with the prequels, and the nostalgia (and meme) factor means they overlook or just ignore the occasional moment of clunky dialogue and so on. ROTS being improved retroactively by The Clone Wars shouldn’t make any sense, but it does, because Anakin is a much more mature and likeable character now.

I think it by the end of the film things start to shape up to actually look and feel like Star Wars, when it leads towards the original film. And people always wanted to see Kenobi and Anakin duel over a pit of lava and see how Vader became this more machine than man Frankenstein’s monster.

Of course the film ends just when things begin to get interesting and we never get to see suited Vader hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights.

I don’t think that many people actually like it. Beyond superficial action and fan service it makes everyone look dumb just so Palpatine can achieve his goals.

If we’re just talking about the Star Wars fandom here, you don’t have to look hard to find people that like the movie. In pretty much every fan community (except possibly here), Quite a few people consider the movie to be one of their favorites, and even more consider it to be the best of the prequels. I’m not personally a big fan of the movie, but it feels a bit disingenuous to say that no one actually likes it.

OP, I think you’ll find a lot of fans here who agree with you. I am one of them.

Not only do I find ROTS absurdly overrated, I think it’s amongst the very bottom of Star Wars films and just a bad film in general. From the ridiculously easily duped and stupid characters, to the ugly video game esque visuals, distracting fan service and OTT saber fights, horrible dialogue, odd clashing tone of bouncing between childish humor/uber drama, and the rushed awkward ending… it’s all just a mess to me. And don’t get me started on the butchering of Vader’s fall (which ties back in to stupid characters).

Yeah, I think it’s vastly overrated and definitely not a masterpiece like it’s made out to be by some. There’s far too much flash without the substance in it, and the way everything gets set up like A New Hope is coming immediately after the movie ends is just… bad.

I agree, but I disagree with it being the best of the prequels.

It has highs as high as Jedi, but the lows are lower than Clones. There’s a lot more lows than highs. There’s good fan edits of the film. Add few extended/deleted scenes, cut a lot of the filler and it’s a solid 6/10. The official edits though are like 4/10. Most of my problems with the movie are it’s pacing and it’s tonal inconsistency. I also really don’t like how everything is wrapped up at the end to lead right into Star Wars. It’s lazy.

I still maintain that The (theatrical cut of the) Phantom Menace has aged the best out of the prequels. It’s pacing, it’s tonal consistency mixed with using actual sets, miniatures, costumes, etc. It’s sound design is absolutely fantastic. It’s a competently made movie that’s bogged down by cringe slapstick and bad writing. Overall though, it’s a 5.5/10.

At least until a couple years ago most people here would tell you ROTS is either dead last or second to last in a “Best To Worst” list, but I think the tide’s shifting even here. ROTS is almost universally acclaimed everywhere else in the fanbase though, and, anecdotally, most peoople I know, be them fans or not, think ROTS is not only the best movie in the PT but the best movie in all the saga. It’s not too unusual an opinion anymore.

Still, as shown above, many here still strongly dislike it. I don’t feel too strongly about it, I just like it. But I think it’s worth pointing out that there’s many many people nowadays who really love it.

I wonder how much that has to do with being a beneficiary of the Clone Wars tv show, where it was largely able to resuscitate the characters and provide a more compelling war narrative than the movies.

I think that’s mostly it, but ROTS becoming a goldmine for Star Wars memes helps too.

Anecdotally I know someone who just recently saw TCW and watching it made her like the PT less so than before. She’s not a hardcore fan, I introduced her to SW with the original 3 years ago and she slowly started liking the franchise more and more, but she’s definitely not a hardcore fan. She said the show feels like it takes place in a different universe from the movies, that Anakin is an entirely different character and that even if more likeable in the show, he seems even less torn or prone to falling to the dark side than his movie self. She said that Siege of Mandalore Anakin just doesn’t flow well into ROTS Anakin, and I find it hard to disagree with her.

After talking to her I looked it up and apparently it’s not an unocommon opinion either. But generally I think TCW did improve the popularity of the PT, yeah.

It’s the least offensively awful of the prequels, but it’s still a prequel.

Phantom Menace is the best prequel. It’s the closest to an actual movie.

This.

And ROTS is the absolute worst of the prequels.

TPM is the prequel movie that they put any effort into. I have a lot of respect for it because of that.

I think both TPM and ROTS get bad reps for being connected to the shitstorm that is AOTC.

TPM is boring but is clearly trying… had George Lucas not directed the actors so bad, it could’ve been on par with the OT. But the lack of any emotion makes it such a drag to watch, I can’t consider it the “best prequel”.

ROTS is completely bonkers but unlike AOTC at least there’s some semblance of a story (albeit one Lucas had to follow) happening. IMO it’s the best prequel, but I’ll admit a lot of my enjoyment comes from the tragedy of Anakin – something that really only hurts once you’ve seen TCW. Without TCW, the movie’s just a serviceable story with great ideas but forced execution. Definitely not the masterpiece Reddit makes it out to be.

Now AOTC on the other hand. Don’t get me started 😃

What makes ROTS worse for me is that it’s “good” mainly for events that would have happened regardless of the movie they were delivered in. And it all pretty much falls flat even with that advantage.

I never considered it that way. And yeah ROTS has only gone up in my estimation recently because I’ve realised the story ticks all the boxes of classical tragedy. Phenomenal premise but bad execution. VERY good point.

Prequel fans are taking the criticisms that fans of the Originals heaped upon the Prequels and passing those same complaints along to the Sequels. It’s a new Star Wars tradition it would seem. Everyone overlooks the flaws in the things they enjoy, but are entirely intolerant of similar flaws in other things.

Sure, movies made in different eras by different people have their own unique qualities and therefore certain unique flaws, but all the Star Wars movies (including the Originals) have a lot more in common regarding flaws than some seem willing to admit.

I feel fairly certain we will eventually see Sequel fans and Skywalker Saga fans saying the same things about whatever comes next, though I think the majority of people have a very positive outlook on the Star Wars franchise as a whole.

Is Revenge of the Sith any good? It’s as good or as bad as any other Star Wars movie.
