The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance has been officially cancelled

I wasn’t aware that there were any plans for another season, since the cliffhanger set up the events of the film pretty well.

I’m sorry, did we not watch the same series?

There is still a huge gap in events between the series and the film. The Gelfings are still numerous, Deet’s been consumed by the Darkening, the Garthim have only just burst onto the scene, and I think some of the Skeksies are unaccounted for.

Sure there’s a big gap, but all events are trending in the direction of the status quo at the beginning of the movie.

It’s rather like going from Attack of the Clones straight into A New Hope. The Republic was becoming an Empire, its armies were being made, Anakin was practically evil by this point, the Jedi were on their way out, etc. Sure, there are questions about how all these things happened, but it’s more interesting to speculate than to fill in all this history with imagination-destroying answers.

All this to say, I would have watched another season. All I’m getting at is maybe there’s a silver lining.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
Episode 9 Rewrite, The Starlight Project (Released!) and ANH Technicolor Project (Released!)

I’m gonna be honest, I do think there’s a decent chance this gets picked up by another network. All the puppets are made, so the second wouldn’t be nearly as expensive.

Honestly, the movie isn’t good. The artistry of the visuals is outstanding (for its time), and so is the worldbuilding, but it’s letdown by honestly one of the worst stories on film, and I don’t say that lightly. It just feels like it’s lacking any meat on its bones, which is a shame.

Of course the world and artistry is the draw, which is why I wouldn’t consider the film to be horrible despite a jarringly dull script. However, when you put it up against the well written series, it definitely doesn’t hold up.

Worst? Compared to what? I think Michael Bay would like to have a word. 😉

And dissing The Dark Crystal on Jim Henson’s birthday no less…

Where were you in '77?

My bad. Worst I’ve seen (I don’t watch Michael Bay movies) and only one of the worst, not the worst. That award goes to The Rider, with dishonorable mentions to Paterson and Waking Life. God that Film Studies 2 was a rough semester.

Well the script isn’t by Henson and everything else in the film is great, so I’m not really dissing him.

He does have a story by credit on the film.

Figured. Anyway, the film’s fine. It’s just watching the show first the movie’s world doesn’t really draw you in because you’ve seen it all before.

Yet another reason why (almost) every series/franchise should be experienced in release order, and not in-universe chronological order.

Having not seen either the film or the series, my instinct tells me that I’d like the movie from 1982 made by Jim Henson himself more than a modern Netflix series.

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

I certainly don’t agree with AniStar on The Dark Crystal’s story being one of the worst put to film, but the characterization is pretty damn flat. Age of Resistance is a definite improvement.

Hell, I’ll go so far as to say that Age of Resistance is a definite improvment on Star Wars. It tackles many of the same themes without any of the childish, simplistic bullshit.

Maybe I was a bit harsh.

So you guys think there’s a chance the show comes back on a different network?
