Musically it kind of feels … scattered? Or kind of too mashed up with so many musical tracks. I understand the thinking behind it, I really do, it’s one of those it may sound good on paper, but not in actuality.

I really tip my hat off on all the the work and ideas people come up with regardless.

I just merged the TFA credits and TROS credits music files. In a perfect world, it would include Hal’s lead in with the Skywalker theme, cut to Rey’s, and then finish out with the Star Wars theme. Basically just adding like 6 or 7 more seconds to the audio that Hal is using. But I don’t have that audio track to work off of.

That’s how I feel about it, too.

I dunno how to remove the watermark either lol.

Sounds good to me, too! I can’t tell for the moment, but is it in surround? Could you perhaps export it with ONLY the added sound effects (no music)? If it’s only stereo, I may need separate tracks for some of the sounds to be able to pan as ships fly into frame from behind.

Honestly, I couldn’t figure out how to mix in 5.1 so I just tested it out with 6 different audio tracks with one all the way right, one half way to the right, etc etc; However, I’ve just figured it out lol, so ill redo it and get it done soonish.

(edit: i actually don’t really understand it lol. should i just send every track as a separate audio file? the shot where I’ve edited it from takes place right after poe’s “hit those underbelly cannons blah blah blah”

I really do like music leading into the ending credits the way Hal has it configured currently. Though the transition between the Rey theme and the credits wipe still seemed a bit off, like there was some undesirable audio bleed on the crossfade. I made an attempt to create a cleaner transition: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-r_k2ogPR2IFIih-e2dLQYCsL5gI9Igb/view?usp=sharing

EDIT: Link is now accessible

That feels right to me. That’s all I needed to be altered with it. Thank you.

If you can just send me six audio tracks and let me know which is which that’d be amazing. If you would just include the video stream as well, the entire unbroken shot, that’d be helpful as well. I’ll do my best to assemble it and see if there’ll be room for a few more “woo”s from you all. And then whenever the watermark can be removed we’ll hopefully be all set.

Hi everyone, I was watching latest workprint and I have some loose thoughts about minor improvments to consider.

First, maybe cut just a few almost still frames from that shot of icy moon that once was Fores Moon of Endor? Just before Falcon shows up. It still has the vibe of: “you know that place, but we’re going somewere else”. But we’re now really going to Forest Moon, and this icey moon means nothing.

Secondly, Reys added(?) line “the Death Star” sound unnatural, not fitting the rest of her sentence about old wars.

Then, trailer fotage of medal. I have a feeling that reordering just 2 short shoots, first Leia laying down, then medal close up may flow better.

Great work with restructuring Luke and Rey talk. Could we try to have a line: “… don’t face your fear”, instead of “Palpatine”? That could strenghten the message that Luke and Leia learned from mistakes of Jedi of the past, and they weren’t hiding Reys heritage, and Luke gives her quest to fight her own weeknes, not to kill her family.

I would also add more R2 and 3PO prequel theme, it’s nice piece of music. And maybee, if Chewie has to survive, maybe 3PO will have his memory permanently deleted? After that his role in the film is very limited. It wouldn’t require much work to make it beliviable I think.

Another one is cutting Finn line: “Lando will send a distress signal”. If they didn’t respond to Leia they will not respond to Lando. It could flow better this way:
“…take the Falcon to the Core systems.
-We have friends there”
Like people are already fighting there and need just leader to unite them and show way to Methanol. Exagol. Not to encourage them to start fighting. There were already some changes in this direction and it could strenghten that message.

And two last thing, bigger but they rather don’t pass.
Silent duel is realy slow and blank. Putting Samuel Kim mashup of Battle of the Heroes and Duel of the Fates is realy lighting it up.

And there is no chance to have this cute look from Poe to Finn instead of Zori? 😃

Great work all of You guys. We are on the verge of greatness. We are this close.

I didn’t even realize that the other moon was supposed to be Endor though, and I don’t think anyone else did either. It’s a blink-and-you-miss-it type shot, and I don’t know where you’re getting that from.

Secondly, Reys added(?) line “the Death Star” sound unnatural, not fitting the rest of her sentence about old wars.

That wasn’t added, it was in the original movie. I don’t hear anything unnatural about it.

But Hal already cut the “Leia knew it too” part of the conversation, so it doesn’t really matter. That implication is gone in this version, and I have no idea how you would edit the line like that.

I would also add more R2 and 3PO prequel theme, it’s nice piece of music. And maybee, if Chewie has to survive, maybe 3PO will have his memory permanently deleted? After that his role in the film is very limited. It wouldn’t require much work to make it beliviable I think.

Hal has always been a big believer in maintaining canon, so I don’t think he would want to cut that.

Silent duel is realy slow and blank. Putting Samuel Kim mashup of Battle of the Heroes and Duel of the Fates is realy lighting it up.

We already tried that, and it doesn’t really work. It feels too “epic” for the tone of the scene.

I’m personally not a big fan of the whole Poe/Finn ship, mainly because there’s very little evidence for it besides maybe one or two moments in TFA. Not all male friends have to be gay, and I think editing it like that would just be cheesy.

+1, so much chemistry!

EDIT: If anyone is interested, this thread does a lot of FinnPoe editing. An edit of the scene you mentioned is a bit rough but I plan on doing something similar alongside cutting out most of Zorii (especially her flirting with Poe)

Throwing out another random idea here.

One of the biggest issues with this film is the pacing. It is way, way too fast and feels like we never get to just spend some time in one place. So I’m wondering if moving around some smaller sequences could help?

For example, in a period of just over a minute:

  1. On Pasaana, Rey and Kylo Ren finish their Skype session
  2. He snatches her necklace
  3. She runs back to Poe, Finn, and crew
  4. Scene jumps to Kylo Ren’s Star Destroyer, they’ve ID’d the necklace
  5. Our heroes are caught immediately by a stormtrooper
  6. Lando appears
  7. TIE fighters arrive

I’m proposing this scene be re-worked a bit:

  1. On Pasaana, Rey and Kylo Ren finish their Skype session
  2. He snatches her necklace
  3. She runs back to Poe, Finn, and crew
  4. Landy appears
  5. Scene jumps to Kylo Ren’s Star Destroyer, they’ve ID’d the necklace
  6. Back to Lando, TIE figures arrive

Totally remove the sequence where the stormtrooper finds them, and move the Star Destroyer scene to take place after Rey and Co. get onto Lando’s transport. Add in a classic Star Wars wipe upon returning to the Lando scene and it slows the pacing considerably.

I made a VERY rough version (I edited this on my phone — traveling right now), but this might give you a feel for the improved pacing. Watch the original scene, and then watch this cut, and I think you’ll find this change makes it feels a little more like Star Wars.

Reiterating how poor the video/editing quality is, but with a little polishing (and when I’m back on my computer), I think the sequence could look very smooth and the pacing much improved.

Just sort of squint your eyes for now. 😉

Why would they follow some random stranger when there’s urgency to get to the Falcon? Originally it’s because they’re spotted, and the random stranger kills a stormtrooper to help them.

You could keep that bit and remove “alert the local troops” from the Kylo scene, but with the stormtrooper identifying them the necklace thing would be pointless.

Lando killing stormtrooper needs to stay, shouldn’t get cut.

Could always move the identification of the necklace to after the local troopers spot them?

This could make it more that the identification was partially because of the local troopers. Not sure if it would work, as I’m not currently looking at the scene.

Yeah that part doesn’t quite make sense. I mean, to be fair, the group just do just look at each other confused and curiously follows him in this version. They weren’t running super fast behind him. I could see it working. But as it is without some heavy tweaking, it’s very awkward and random that Lando just appears in this way.

I say axe Lando’s scene on passana completely, it’s contrived and brakes the pace. If we save his introduction to the scene where Poe is talking to Leia’s body it would be more impactful.
Here’s what cutting the scene would look like.

While I agree that something should be done to save the pacing on Pasanna, it’s a huge no from me on cutting Lando’s introduction.

Edit:

I would also argue that having Lando’s first appearance be the next time we see would make that already random moment even more ridiculous. He would literally be appearing completely out of the blue. At least the theatrical sets his role up in some kind of way.

A nice idea but you lose all of the exposition about Ochii, Luke, the ship, why they’re going out into the Forbidden Valley in the first place.

FWIW ziggyonce, the re-sequence is interesting and does do a lot for the pacing but looks like it would need a fair bit of finessing to get feeling smooth.

Also it does seem kinda awkward dramatically when they follow him without explanation. Could move his later line so he says “Leia sent me a transmission, follow me!” (this line is already kind of awkwardly placed where it is in the movie, anyway.)

To be honest, there is no point of messing with the first act any more than we have. The scene on pasaana is important for exposition reasons, and introducing lando otherwise he’d just appear out of knowhere later in the movie. Cutting it or shortening it would lose this and would honestly even mess up the pace even more than it already is. Imo the scene works just fine, although yes it is fast that’s just the way the film was paced by the editing/script. I guess I feel like it should just stay as is.

Not a fan of Lando’s introduction at all, but I don’t think it’s possible to cut it out. Too much exposition and setup
