i dont know what to do about the clouds moving in different directions considering the sky in my clip was literally just footage of a real sky lol

Totally agree with the TIEs. While the idea and continuety is there I’m just not happy how the last part of the scene plays out and becomes a little to convenient compared to TLJ.

Is there any way of explaining that Palpatine is a clone? Movie on first viewing and without JJ’s later given context suggests he just survived all this time.

This edit replaces the tank full of Snoke clones with a tank full of Palpatine clones. I’d say that’s a pretty strong implication.

Oh yeah, and if anyone so inclined wishes to add a distant Vader’s castle to the reverse shot when Kylo picks up and looks at the Wayfinder, I won’t try to stop you.

One can mask this landscape into the background of that shot:

I think Palpatine’s return is handled drastically better in this edit just with the two changes that have been made.

First, we see a tank of Palpatine clones, rather than Snokes. Far more useful and relevant information is now being implied with this shot. Palpatine already says “I made Snoke,” and it frankly doesn’t matter whether that’s metaphorical or literal, because all we really need to know about Snoke now is that Palpatine put him into power.

Then, Palpatine’s line about his spirit jumping bodies is now moved to his first conversation with Kylo (as a defense for Kylo not to kill him), rather than its original placement at the end of the movie with Rey.

These two bits of information together in quick succession, Palpatine clones and possession, should be enough for the audience to assume the canon fact of Palpatine’s return: that this is a clone body inhabited by his spirit after he died in RotJ.

And if the audience doesn’t quite put it together on their own, Merry Brandybuck still has his “dark science, cloning, secrets only the Sith knew” line in the Ajan Kloss meeting. Originally (and still kinda now tbh) this line was just ridiculous, but now it can help the audience put 2 & 2 together in their head given the information they acquired in the Exegol scene.

Simple solution: Someone superimpose a sign that says
“Vader’s Castle 1.3 miles
Darth Cupcakes 2.1 miles”

Man, I’m a problem solver!

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

However cool that would be, it’s not necessary, and I’m happy merely to namedrop Mustafar in the crawl. That’s enough to tie it into Vader and make sense why there were two: one for the master and one for the apprentice.

I know it is minor, but I would love if someone could insert Vader’s castle into the background of this shot too!

Some amazing work being done here, everyone! Just thought I’d weigh in on a couple things:

  • I’m super in favour of Option B for the lightspeed-skipping scene. Popasketti’s new shot looks great, removes the problem of TIEs tracking instantly through hyperspace, while still having the later dialogue reference it in an oblique way works. The point of the scene is that Poe and Rey are at odds, it doesn’t matter what “lightspeed-skipping” is or how it works and we don’t need to know.

  • It would be really cool to be able to work Palpatine’s message into the film somewhere, somehow. Such a missed opportunity.

Hal what do you think of this arrangement of shots for the ending:

  • “Rey Skywalker”
  • Rey and BB-8 walk to the right of the screen, noise of Falcon approaching.
  • Falcon makes it’s way up in the air
  • Entire scene of the crew in the cockpit from when leaving Ajan Kloss, including Rey and Chewie dialogue.
  • Final shot of Falcon closing in on Twin Suns - lightspeed - End.

The earlier shot would have to be removed and dealt with. It’s not necessary, and the music choice wouldn’t probably fit with two new shots. It could be attempted in the name of trying it, though.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Do you mean from 19 minutes into the official release?

That could actually be pretty cool…

Should show them in cockpit, then cut to Falcon flying away.
I think the cockpit needs different lighting/filter maybe something to match Tatooine tone.

Although, while a shot LIKE that would be nice, that particular shot doesn’t particularly scream end of movie.

I think it could. Maybe try the shots like this:

  • “Rey Skywalker”
  • Rey and BB-8 walk to the right of the screen, noise of Falcon approaching.
  • The crew in the cockpit from when leaving Ajan Kloss
  • Final shot of Falcon closing in on Twin Suns/lightspeed/End.

I’d like to see an edit like this manage to get Threepio saying something along the lines of “Setting course for Coruscant”

If they’re going to have a line in that scene, just keep it the way it was in its original placement. Chewie speaks and then Rey looks emotional before replying, “It is.”

I mocked up the ending with the cockpit shot (music-only) and I think it actually makes the final music track smooth out a lot nicer towards the end!

I also increased the warmth of the cockpit shot to simulate the sun through the windows.

It would be cool to include R2 and maybe D0 behind BB-8 at the end.

And it would be AWESOME to include the ghosts of Luke, Leia and Ben watching them fly off.

The Skywalker Saga:

This is the way.

I agree, that shot feels too active, it gives off a “time for another adventure!” vive, which is what it originally is, instead of a finale. And Rey loses all the emotion from the “Rey Skywalker” moment.

The chess scene works in a better, more subtle way to show that Rey’s friends travel with her. I much prefer the current, simpler ending. It puts the focus on Rey and the Skywalkers, and ends with just the Falcon riding off into the (binary) sunset. Classic!

+1

Though the Skywalker ghosts watching the Falcon/sunrise as an ending shot is a neat idea!

Personally I love this idea and hope someone uses it in their edit. If there was a way to add in Threepio and Artoo then even better!
