I really like the “Reconstruction” cut of The Big Red One. It’s one of the very few times I’ve seen a good movie turn into a great one by adding a few key scenes back in.

Return to ‘Escape from New York’ (2003)

The blurb:
“In the summer of 1981, surrounded on all sides by big budget blockbusters like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Clash of the Titans, Dragonslayer, For Your Eyes Only and Superman II, a modestly scaled independent actioner / social satire called Escape from New York opened, seized the imagination of the public; then went on to become one of the most successful films of it’s year as well as one of the most popular cult films of all time. In this retrospective the original cast and crew (incl. director John Carpenter, co-writer Nick Castle, producer Debra Hill, cinematographer Dean Cundey, and stars Kurt Russell, Adrienne Barbeau, Issac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanton and more) look back decades later on one of the most enjoyable filmic experiences of their careers.”

Jodorowsky’s DUNE (2013)
http://www.documentarymania.com/playerf.php?title=Jodorowsky Dune - video embedded in page (1 hr. and 28 mins.)
There’s a captions button (CC) on the video for the non-English parts

The blurb:
“Alejandro Jodorowsky’s daring and psychedelic films of the early 1970’s, ‘El Topo’ and ‘The Holy Mountain’, cemented his status as the Godfather of the Midnight Movie. In 1974, he began work on his next film, possibly the most ambitious film ever attempted. In the pre-Star War era, Jodorowsky’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel DUNE was poised to change cinema forever. His DUNE would star Brontis Jodorowsky, Alejandro’s own 12 year old son, alongside Orson Welles, Mick Jagger, David Carradine and even Salvador Dali. The team of assembled visual artists were some of the most provocative talents of the era, including H.R. Giger, Chris Foss, and Jean ‘Moebius’ Giraud. The groundbreaking special effects were under the control of Dan O’Bannon and the soundtrack would be created by Pink Floyd and the French prog-rock masters, Magma.”

So many feels going on in this one, but I totally understand why this movie couldn’t get made. I wonder if Villeneuve will use any of the concepts and ideas from this… I’m sure he’s seen the “DUNE book”, that massive tome of storyboards and artwork (hell, I’d like to see it!)
Also, there are soooooo many amazing, gorgeous posters made for this movie…

I highly doubt he will, and I don’t think he should either. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see Jodorowsky’s version finished in some manner, maybe as an animated film like he suggested in the doc, but having read the original novel I get why the whole thing rubs people the wrong way. Jodorowsky’s Dune would have been his version of Dune, and had little to nothing to do with the Herbert’s novel other than a few names and core plot-points. So I hope Villeneuve manages to make the definitive faithful adaptation, and maybe at some later point the Jodorowsky version can finally be made as an alternate interpretation.

However, speaking of Dune movies;

Pink Floyd - The Wall: The Lost Documentary (1980)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tmn4IUi6Omk - from the Mike Sparrow YouTube channel (25 mins.)

The blurb:
“Pink Floyd ‘The Wall’ Documentary is a 25 minute documentary based around The Wall live shows, and features the unloading of the touring equipment as it arrives at the Earls Court venue in 1980, it goes on to show Roger at sound check, and a general walk about during the set up of the August London shows, and includes interviews with the Pink Floyd and their crew. It was August 1980, at Earls Court, when cameras recorded the frenetic operation of the entire load-in process. One editor, working alone for six months, was able to create this ‘behind-the-scenes’ documentary. The film successfully shows the magnitude of people and material necessary to mount this incredible production. The staging of this concert has been referred to as, ‘…possibly twice the size of any other show done in rock & roll thus far’ (meaning 1980). Perhaps more significant, this performance would be the last for the band with all the original members who recorded the album. In the melee of the breakup, this documentary was archived and forgotten for nearly a quarter century.”

^ That Conan doc’s a good one, I watched it on blu-ray the other night. A lot of interesting stuff in there; that outtake after the credits gave me a good laugh.

I’m looking for a better quality copy of great movie stunts. The one on Raiders of the Lost Ark.
All i’ve ever seen is a really dodgy laserdisc transfer that was overly compressed and stuck on a single layer DVD. I used to have it on VHS and that was not all that much better.
The overly compressed version that was on youtube was worse than the fan brew DVD.
Hopefully someday the people who did 4K77 will transfer it off of 16mm.
