Everytime I see Palpys “first name” used I feel annoyed.

Has any author or executive ever taken “credit” for that bit of unneeded lore? Stood up at a con and said 'Yeah! Who here is glad I did that?!"

Cuz I think it’s a big pile of sheev.

Yeah I thought that was his final gift to us.

And then we got Macklunkey. It’s good to despise your audience.

Whenever I come across “Sheev”, I automatically think “shiv”, which instinctively brings to mind an image of Palps in prison, stabbing another inmate with a mini-lightsaber he made from a toothbrush.

“Sheev” doesn’t sound any better or worse to me than any other made up Star Wars name, to be totally honest. There are a handful of really good ones, but I don’t think I’ve ever felt like they really fucked it up. Now, regular Earth names showing up in Star Wars is another story (Beaumont in ROTS being the most recent, and John D. in ANH being the ur example).

Something about it really bugs me. Not just how silly it is, but the fact that it’s not in any of the films and was added so much later. Just feels fundamentally wrong to me.

I mean, Palpatine has to have some sort of first name, right? Maybe it’s just me, but I wouldn’t like it if they kept calling him “Palpatine,” without even identifying his full name. It’s just a silly made-up name, it isn’t something important like Yoda’s origins.

Funny you mention Yoda…

I always loved the end of BEOWULF where king Hrothgar say, “I am so glad you came, Jeff Beowulf!”

That’s not really the same situation. Beowulf is a legendary mythic hero from a culture that might not even have had multiple names, and Palpatine is a silly character in a movie about space wizards. As long as they don’t mention it in the movies (which they haven’t, so far) I’m fine with him having a first name.

“Palpatine” could’ve been his first name. After all, in the real world, we don’t tend to address monarchs by their surnames.

I thought Palpatine’s first name was Cos.

What made you think that?

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

In an early draft of ANH, the emperor’s name was ‘Cos Dashit’
because he causes the shit to happen.
No, I’m NOT joking, look it up.

A better play-on-words than most of Lucas’ other names.

I’m pretty sure it was also used in the 90s’ merchandise.
