Hey, thanks for taking the time to write up some ideas.

I’m not sure Luke beckoning Rey to pursue him during the fishing scene makes a lot of sense, as it’s bookended by variations of “leave me alone.”

No problems Hal, that missing scene does indeed have a good message but I get why it might not be the best of fits for your edit, a completely secluded and alone Luke is a strong alternative.

What I ment to convey with the fishing scene with Rey is she is to worried about the Jedi masters safety but hes clearly a big boy who can look after himself and doesnt really need her shout out careful but at this stage in your edit its all just very small subtle stuff that works with or without now.

Possible small fixes are:

@ 23:35 - Luke Fishing Scene
Issue: Rey shouts careful as the jedi master jumps over to the cliff on the pole.
Fix: Possibly cutting to Lukes face as he looks over and removing her shout out as if to say follow me now.

@ 1:13:10 - Rey vs Luke
Issue: As Rey fells Luke and holds his sabre over him the jedi master looks up helplessly.
Fix: By cutting to Rey unigniting the sabre strait after Luke holds himself with the force from the fall we can remove the initial shocked expression which helps play out the my mind is not in the fight viewpoint.

I completely and utterly fail to understand why either of these things are “issues” …

Same thought Chain, I’m a bit confused too.

Sorry but if you don’t get it then you utterly fail 😉

I jest but seriously theres no real fail here its all subjective fixes at this point as Hal has resolved the major issues with his edit and whats left is subtle changes and left to personal opinion and thats just mine. ✌

With some sort of space horses in the trailer for IX, I’m hoping that (whether through editing or just luck) it can play as the fulfillment of what Finn and Rose wish they could have done on Canto Bight, but didn’t.

If so, I might put back in her line, “I’ve never seen one [a fathier] before.”

Time will tell huh? The new Star Wars trilogy seems to love on space horses.

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

I know this might not be a popular idea, but for the final version of V3 I really think Yoda’s “Ahh, read them have you? Page turners they not!” joke should get cut out. By having Luke basically confirm that he didn’t even read any of the texts makes him seem childish in his behavior and hurts his change of heart. Why would Luke be so concerned about the text and protecting the legacy of the Jedi if he didn’t even bother to read the ancient texts? I think the scene would work and flow much better without the MCU-style humor.

Basically the dialogue would pace out as follow:

Luke: “The sacred Jedi texts!”

cut out joke and Luke’s reaction shot

Yoda: “Yes, yes, yes. Wisdom they held, but that library contains nothing that the girl Rey does not already possess.”

The Skywalker Saga:
I · II · III · IV · V · VI · VII · VIII · IX
This is the way.

I am fine with the line personally. Yoda has a sense of humor even in the OT.

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

Personally, it’s very inviting and pertinent for me to project myself onto Luke in that scene. With what Yoda would be referring to in my subjective dreamscape, my response to Yoda’s question wouldn’t be that I hadn’t read the texts before.

I do wonder what a cut of TFA and TLJ would be like that strips all (subjectively) ~’unearnest’ humor. Part of what made the original SW great was it’s sincerity.

I thought that joke was very much in keeping with Yoda’s warmth and playfulness in the OT and I wouldn’t want to see it removed.

The joke also holds meaning, thematically. Luke tells Rey that the legacy of the Jedi is failure. Despite this rather cynical assessment, it is heavily implied in RotS and especially The Clone Wars that the Jedi fell because they lost their way. The Jedi texts symbolize that failure because part of the problem was that the Jedi had become too rigid and dogmatic in their thinking; they had lost touch with the Force and were relying on tradition instead. They were essentially blind, which is why Palpatine was able to scheme behind their backs.

Luke’s instinct is to destroy the texts, and Yoda confirms that this instinct is correct. The texts were dry and boring and what really matters is the Force itself, because it alone will guide you. Rey needs to look forward, not backward, if she is to succeed. It is a powerful lesson and NOT MCU-style humor at all.

On a similar note, Luke tossing the lightsaber over his shoulder basically represents the same theme. Luke is done with the Jedi Order. Tossing the lightsaber was intended to startle the viewer and make a strong impression, not make them laugh. The viewer is left flabbergasted, simply asking why he would do such a thing. But again, this is merely a continuation of themes brought forth in RotS, which I predict will extend into TRoS.

Then why does the music stop right just before he tosses the saber?

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

I also prefer to be referred to as “TNT”, not “Freezing”.

That’s why Poppasketti’s idea to shift the music is such an excellent idea.

But Yoda didn’t destroy the texts, they’re aboard the Falcon at the end of the film.

The text idea is so weird. 7 episodes without any mention to that, and suddenly they are somehow important… but not (Luke didn’t read them, Yoda destroys them)… but important again since they finally got saved… but not that important because they only are saved in the blink of a shot… it’s really the weird thing about how RJ handled his Star Wars flick. A mix between taking things seriously but ultimately making fun of it… but finally not… but still a little bit… I missed when Star Wars (from 1977 to 2005) were serious movies without irony that break the fourth wall.

I think it would be an interesting experiment to see what the movie would look like with literally no attempts at humor. It would 100% not be a good edit/actual idea to implement to any serious edit, but it would be very interesting to see.

👍 Definitely agree on that, at this point less in this case isn’t more.

Regarding Luke throwing the sabre isn’t there an edit where he just drops the sabre in front of him then walks off there by cutting out the tongue in cheek humour from that scene might make for an interesting watch to get that in the Legends edit.

With the caretakers being removed, it might be good to trim Snoke’s line about destroying the entire island.

I’m not really sure what that line has to do with the caretakers. I’d prefer keeping it, cutting it would be awkward.
