While I am waiting on a brief snippet of FX work for one shot, I was able to sit down and record a sleep-deprived commentary track for V3 of this project.

It’s… good (?).

The “sleep-deprived” part somehow makes this sound even more interesting.

By the way, the Kylo scar is mostly done so I should be able to have it ready before you finish.

Hey Hal! Just finished rewatching TFA:R for the n’th time and realized that at the very end when Rey is on Ach-to, there are plenty of bird noises, but no Porg sounds! Might be nice to toss a couple in the background for consistency. Just a thought!

Looking forward to V3!

SHOCK

WOW, SHUT THE BLAST DOORS !
My go to version of the force awakens is getting a revamp to V3!

This is brilliant as these new changes mirror the exact scenes IMO that needed editing which DigModiFicaTions Heir To The Force had got right.

  • Finn doesn’t mass slaughter the hanger bay troopers who were his comrades just moments before.
💡Less Wohoos! as the pair escape in the Tie fighter would be nice, “Did you see that, DID YOU SEE THAT!”😓

  • Addressed issue of Kylo stating “its FN-2187” the scene was so random !?

  • Fixed Finn’s comedic line about almost being killed several times by Chewie gone

  • Removed Han shooting a stormtrooper while facing the other way, Thank you Hal
💡Would of been nice to of had the Han liking Chewies bow caster scene cut here as come on hes never used it in all the time hes known Chewie? Han appreciating the bowcaster at the Rathtar scene was passible but not so here.

  • Removed Finn’s comedic moment of misunderstanding Han’s head nod while searching for Rey, good as Finns no black Jar Jar

  • Removed mention of the Hosnian system’s destruction when Finns being introduced to Leia

  • No need to change mirroring Leia screwing over Chewie like at the end of ANH by walking past him here.
😁 Very true, but… if it is possible to fix.

  • Hals new commentary track

Also:
💡Very subtle thing but the John Williams intro score in TFA seemed flat compaired to the original trilogies score for the intro crawl which Heir To The Force uses.

💡 Reguarding the Rathtar scene DigModiFicaTion did it well by cutting the scene at the right time so we wasn’t swamped with too much CGI on screen.

Thanks Hal9000
Merry Xmas

I’m glad there’s going to be a V3. Did you by chance see The Stormtrooper Paradox by Pop Culture Detective on YouTube? Because it seems to fix most of the issues with that.

The Stormtrooper Paradox Video

Interesting vid Dr. Krogshöj thats my exact thoughts about the new storm troopers on my 1st viewing of TFA that there was something else making this lone trooper act differently, maybe we might get that answered in the future still.

Not sure it can be dealt with fanediting though. Hal is aldready planning to remove the weird “Finn killing troopers” sequence when the Tie takes off. It should lessen this weakness of TFA.

I would however be in favor to get rid of that as well :

Yeah this line and the “woohoos” are very embarrassing here… (as well as the “Got a boyfriend ?” line 😕)

Yeah, that video essay is what gave me the idea to trim Finn firing on his fellow troopers immediately after tying to escape with Poe.
Not interested in the other trims, though, since they are much more peripheral and didn’t bother me. (I used a whole deleted scene for Ep2 about Padmé denying to her family that Anakin is her boyfriend.)

My stance on revising fan edits.

By the way, in this attempt to lessen the dehumanization of the stormtrooper figure, is Maz “Those beasts !” still going to be kept ?

(oh and +1 with the boyfriend stuff, I overlooked the term was already inserted in your edit which is my go version, so indeed that’s less of an issue)

I agree, those two trims are enough. I once thought restoring the Finn meets the villager deleted scene but removing the watermark is troublesome, and it might disturb the flow of the sequence too much.

This is not really a big deal whatsoever, but something I wanted to share with y’all.

I like it when edits don’t necessarily contradict secondary/tertiary material like the books, tv shows, etc., and while the Starkiller Restructure is a big change, I don’t think it is a big contradiction to the rest of canon, beyond the TFA novelizations.

It looks like, though, that we will be seeing a hologram of the Hosnian destruction in the Resistance tv show down the road, and we will see Hux give his speech right before it.
https://youtu.be/m7Pls-vYWwM?t=57

Again, not a big deal. It’s a tv show aimed at younger audiences. Although you could hand-wave it and just say that the First Order just replayed Hux’s speech before showing the Hosnian destruction. That works for me. Though I’m sure other things will pop up that could contradict it.

I’m sure it is not a big deal to you, Hal, especially since you had Padme live at the end of ROTS! Just thought I would mention. I personally think the change is worth it, and any contradictions in other material can just be rationalized or ignored.

Author
Time

Yeah, it’s certainly an incidental change; depicting it that way on the show could easily be chalked up to in-universe editing.
And yeah, Padme’s fate blows that out of the water! 😃

My stance on revising fan edits.

Author

Although to be fair I think the only thing Padme’s survival really contradicts is in the comics, when Vader tracks down Padme’s mortician who reveals that he was told to make Padme look she was still pregnant when she died. And still, it isn’t a blatant contradiction.

Yeah, I’ve never been interested in comics at all. By their nature, it seems little of substance really ever comes across by them. [Deal with it sunglasses]

I don’t like to go out of my way to contradict the films in ways that would spill over into the EU in meaningful ways, overall.

JEDIT: While I’m not interested in comic books of any kind, my jab was directed at Star Wars comic books in particular. Hardly essential reading.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Author
Time

No worries, I actually don’t read them either. I just like the idea that hypothetically someone could watch a fan edit and it still would work in the context of the rest of the canon, since I would imagine the Venn Diagram of people who watch Star Wars edits and people who consume other Star Wars material overlaps to some degree.

But obviously I don’t think all Star Wars edits should have to be bound by canon. That would be boring.

Author
Time

I think it’s wonderfully freeing to consider only the films as canon, especially if you’re extrapolating into the past or the future of the series. The more that EU is considered canon, the more that the Star Wars universe sinks into a sea of mediocrity, in my opinion. Freed of that, the films become an interpretive fulcrum representing an ever-shifting and ever exciting universe of tantalizing possibility.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Totally agree! What I love about fan edits is that we can create new ways to enjoy all of the movies. It definitely wouldn’t be as fun if we were forced into a box like that. But I think it is fair if some editors want to use the canon as a guideline for their projects, an equally as fair if another editor wants to make radical, fun changes to their projects, as well. Cool to see what people come up with.

The comics are a mixed bag - worthless at the worst, though fantastic when they’re good. There’s a sliding scale in fandom’s mind about what content is the most important, for adhering to canon, which goes something roughly like:

  • Just the OT
  • ^+ the ST
  • ^+ the PT
  • ^+ the anthology films
  • ^+ the more mature TV shows (Clone Wars and Rebels)
  • ^+ the supplementary web show stuff
  • ^+ books, comics, games, etc
All editors are targeting a point somewhere on that scale, with the other important metric being quality of the film they’re outputting.

I’m a comic reader so I absolutely get a little mental niggle when I see some reference to canon which a fanedit I like no longer uses - like that Padme’s death one, or having Cornelius Evazan seen on Jedha when he’s not in my version of Rogue One. BUT, I’d always prefer to have a great movie which generates a niggle in a comic over having the movie slavishly adhere to every little element of canon.

I think the TV shows are important enough though to carry a lot more weight when considering whether or not to include something in your fanedit movie canon.
