The Last Jedi: Legendary (Released) — Page 31

Well, according to them it was seamless and if I hadn’t told them then they never would have guessed it was a fanedit.

However, for the movie itself, they just thought “it was okay and that they could have done more, it felt like they are running out of ideas.”

With all your edits Hal, I think you made the best overall choices. You make the smart choices, there are some things that cannot be changed that would make it look rough, edit-y, etc. Your prequels are the standard for myself and my friends that I showed.

Back to the point with Legacy, like Ash, I have not had a chance to sit down and watch it. Once I do, I will certainly provide some feedback, specifically with your goals and direction with your edits.

Thanks Hal for making this fanedit, I’ve finally added a review on Fanedit:

Well the hints in its title Legendary this fanedit definitely is. On their own these amendments might not sound like much but all together makes all the difference to the end product. I got what the movie was trying to saying in the theatre and can appreciate the film because of that which is best said by Yoda:
“Luke, we are what they grow beyond” and Lukes: “Its time for the Jedi, to end.” quotes after all what are Jedi at the end of the day a group of religious force sensitive individuals so why not consider a new group with the next generation of force sensitive people and in turn open up that all to familiar galaxy far, far away.

With that in mind this fanedit strengthens this core message by tightening the story eg perfectly removing the unnecessary Canto Bight chase scene and cutting small scenes or quotes which leaves you less distracted and concentrating more on characters motives. Adding deleted scenes like Luke morning the loss of Han is a must to have here but my only problem is the omission of the other deleted scene, the third lesson were Luke shows Ray that the Jedi’s ways are ultimately floored as he tells her that rushing to help the caretakers is not the Jedi’s way. I can understand why this scene was not added back as Hals removed all scenes with caretakers to show Luke was truly on his own on the island but adding that third lesson would of paid off better with the stories flow even if it meant keeping the other few scenes with the caretakers in the film.

Overall this fanedits achieved what it set out to do by strengthening the original story and making that force sensitive broom boy scene at the end make more sense ;]
Well done Hals

Edit: Also must say listened to Hals commentary track and was nice to hear someone talk fondly of the original trilogy perticualy Revenge of The Jedi and like me was the first Starwars movie I had as a kid and how the originals shouldnt need editing of any sort except to remove any “special” CGI treatments.

I just watched your latest version Hal and it’s absolutely magnificent. Subtle changes which overall just tighten up the movie fantastically. And I thought the entire Canto Bight plot was seamless and not jarring or too minimal in the slightest.

The Finn/Rose escape from Snoke’s ship is still a little problematic, with underwhelming Phasma and the cartoony BB8/AT-AT segment, but I can’t really see other options there.

Brilliant, brilliant work.

Nice idea to add a Wilhelm scream in their was expecting a first order trooper to shout it out but must say odd place to have it right then Kyo swings his light sabre at Luke.

I have to go back and watch again, but pretty sure it wasn’t during the Luke and Kylo fight. And what I remember is it was a trooper.

It is when a certain droid hijacks a certain vehicle. That should be more than enough 😉

Turn up the volume and hold your ear very close right as Kylo takes that swing that sends Luke spiraling.

Whoa, I hear it! Wait, so did you add 2 Wilhelm screams? Because I definitely hear one in the scene DZ-330 references. I can give timecode if we want to drop all mystery. 😉

Hey Hal I FINALLY watched your edit with some friends the other night. The good thing was, they did not catch anything that looks out of place or couldn’t remember what was in the original cut. (It’s been awhile since the saw it.) The edit they did notice was the the Snoke Betrayal scene. I loved it, so much better than the theatrical!

Anyway, back to it. I loved the trimming up of the movie all in general. It cleaned up such unncessary “bulk” and toned down the overly comedic areas that were not necessary.

One of your big highlights i think is the moving of the Yoda scene for me. It makes a clean transition from the second Act to the final one.

All in all, you make good conservative choices to make the movie very enjoyable. So far the personal choice I would like to make a major edit is the Leia Poppins - mostly for visual reasons since the scene still makes me cringe on how … odd it looks and feels.

If someone was really good with CGI and could add BB-8 running with Rose and Finn to the shuttle … that would fix the goffy AT-ST scene … the Phasma battle isn’t as necessary for Finn’s character as much as his sacrifice scene…

Anyway, again Hal, amazing work!

I like how Snoke’s last line or two was removed and how you have just the music and Rey/Ben’s expressions sell the moment when he betrays Snoke, but did you ever make a version of this with its theatrical music? Nothing against it, just think the music in that moment was already good, and the TFA music just sticks out to me. I see why it was used, though.

Jarbear, thanks for the feedback! Glad your movie night was fun for all.

RogueLeader, I did not attempt to do an alternate audio track with the original music for that scene, and I do not believe it would have happened to sync nicely with the existing music being conformed to the new scene timing. It… might? But, I didn’t have a reason to see.

Hahhaha I heard the second scream, that was fantastic.

I was able to watch the dvd version and enjoyed quite a lot! Already being a big fan of the film, I was hesitant towards some decisions when reading them but found they worked nicely, e.g. the occasional trimmed dialogue and all the reinserted deleted material (any interest in incorporating this little moment? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tneHUL3LRWI such a wonderful image + a nice build-up to to the confrontation)

There were a few things that I found jarring though. The truncated Canto Bight section is just too quick in the first half, it’s almost played as a weird joke for the audience – subversion to the extreme (Here’s a fun new planet! Just kidding we’re in jail!). It came off as one of the most immediate examples where I was watching something edited. Alongside that, the Yoda scene feels very out of place, making an already long last section even more oddly paced. I’m not sure if this project is still in progress but if it is those would be the two I would play around with the most.

Thank you for putting these together Hal. I really loved the restructuring everyone did on TFA and think there’s a similarly lovely edit of this in the future.

Thanks for the feedback! Moreso than 1-3 or 7, 8 is one which I easily imagine watching the original version rather than a fan edit on some viewings.
I think your read of the entrance to Canto Bight is as intended: one more “gotcha” sequence in the movie in order to remove the fathier stuff.
And I love the caretakers, for the record! 😉

I see what you mean, and it almost worked for me in that way. I think when it goes wrong is the next scene in the jail, when the tone is much more dire and “how are we gonna get out of this one”. It makes the contrivance of them then instantly finding a new code breaker and (in this cut) immediately escaping feel even more strange. I don’t know, if other people aren’t feeling that maybe it’s just me!

I watched this having not seen TLJ since the theater, and I thought the movie was pretty seamless. I had forgotten some of it since then and only now remember things like the iron joke. I would have made a few more cuts like Hux repeating Kylo’s orders at the end, because he’s no longer the butt of a bunch of jokes, and things like the “reach out” joke and the Jakku being nowhere joke, only because I don’t care for the type of humor that breaks the flow of a scene. The same reason why my least favorite gag in TFA is Poe’s “Who talks first” scene, but the prank call actually worked quite well in this edit and is now a nice callback to that first joke in TFA, regardless of how I feel about that type of humor.

And speaking of TFA, I watched this after Hal’s TFA edit, which I had never seen and hadn’t seen TFA since sometime before Rogue One, and I honestly had a blast with both because I managed to rekindle the same excitement I had before all this current BS going on. I wasn’t a fan of TLJ, but I liked it a lot more this time through.

I think Rose’s kiss doesn’t work in this version, but I didn’t think it worked in the original either. Also not a fan of Broom Boy, but I like the idea behind it. I wouldn’t have minded if the movie had ended with the Falcon going to lightspeed.

Again, I would have made some more tweaks, but it would probably only total to less than 60 seconds. I still don’t love the film, but I liked it this time, which is more than I can say about the theatrical version. Everything related to the resistance plot feels unnatural and just an excuse for drama, in my opinion (glad others like the movie, though!), and Canto Bight being cut just felt like another part of that weak plot, except this time I was spared a long sequence further derailing the pace and themes of the film. I honestly didn’t notice anything jarring.

Thanks for making both of these edits! It was nice to kick back and enjoy some SW stuff again. 😃

I remember reading about this edit from the reddit thread. I’m glad to come across an edit that doesn’t cut the film down so much. The various trims and tweaks help tighten up the story and keep it from dragging too much.

Personally, I would have preferred at least a cut down version of the Fathier escape; however, I understand why it was removed. It feels as if Finn and Rose’s side story is too brief. I know Canto Bight is not highly regarded, but I enjoyed seeing a new part of the Star Wars universe even if it was brief.

Still, this is probably my favorite edit of TLJ so far. Well done!

This version is MUCH better than the theatrical release. Thank you! I love your prequel trilogy edits!

I like how you handled the phone prank with Poe and Hux. I like that the fish-nuns are completely cut, I like how you handled Canto Bight, I like how you handled the Porg giving Chewie the puppy eyes scene(the scene is still needed because it shows Luke sneaking into the Falcon). I like that you cut Luke saying “Nothing you can say…”, I like that you left in the leaf tickle scene, I like the Rey from Nowhere joke, it’s fine. I don’t mind the green milk scene… it shows how young and immature Rey is, and gives her something to work with as far as growing as a character, an adult, a leader, a Jedi, etc.

I would like to see a bit more trimming of terrible jokes though… such as the BB-8 whack-a-mole, followed by a head-butt to the X-wing computer to “fix it”. Other’s have cut it down to BB-8 just using the first arm fix and moving on… and I think it works really well. It helps with the tone of that scene, to convey urgency. He doesn’t have time to goof around on a stupid joke.

Trim the Paige and the remote scene so that the remote doesn’t CLEARLY fall well below the catwalk, with Paige on her back, then a split second later she’s on her stomach and the remote is now suddenly just under the catwalk where she grabbed it… aarrrrgh!

Please trim out Leia slapping Poe.

Also, cutting part of Leia flying in space scene… cut the part where she appears to be a mile out into space, and just use the close-up of her, then show her hand twitch. This makes it look like she’s a lot closer to the cruiser, and within the “shields\protective bubble”, making it a little more believable. That shot clearly shows her WAY outside of the protective shields, due to the background First Order fire hitting the shields. Also, if you can remove her opening her eyes and just as she starts to fly towards the cruiser, cut away to Poe and Finn at the window(their eyes make it look like she’s really close), then cut back to Leia entering the bridge area, flying to the door… This way we can assume that the shields give her SOME protection from the vacuum of space and don’t completely remove us from the immersion of what we’re watching. If you don’t show her open her eyes, it makes it look like the force is saving her or she’s subconsciously saving herself via the force, instead of her using the force herself directly, which she has never done before(other than ‘feeling’ Luke, emotionally). This scene made me yell “OH COME ON!!” in the theater… sigh… It was not a good start to the movie, after watching Poe and Hux goof around on a phone prank and BB-8 head-butt a computer to fix it…

I would like to see the “May the force be with you” between Holdo and Leia at the end cut, and just let Holdo say it. It’s just plain awkward…

I would like to see Finn’s fake out sacrifice completely removed - The crash right in front of the walkers that is completely ignored, Finn dragging Rose on a sled for what looks like a couple MILES(how long was he driving in that mono-ski speeder to get close to that cannon), but then he’s able to just drag her back to the door with nobody noticing or shooting them, the cringe dialogue and kiss - it can all be done away with… just make it look like they turn back when Poe gives the order… Just cut Finn and Rose out of the scene where the cannon blows up the door. Plenty of people are able to remove them from that scene. The debris can be from another speeder or something.

The kid at the end is ok, but I would like to see just the shot of the ring cut out… just have the kid staring off into space, dreaming of leaving that place and maybe joining the Resistance\Rebels. He was just talking about Luke, so we know what he’s thinking at that moment… we don’t need the ‘super awesome decoder ring!’ to tells us what he’s thinking…

Thanks Hal!!! Superior to the theatrial cut by at least 12 parsecs. Just cannot thank you enough, you took out enough small bad stuff it made the rest of my gripes tolerable. I really enjoyed this canto bight was short and sweet.

If I could magically erase the porgs and do something about luke tossing his saber, (I like the way ortega is handling that) and much of the bb8 and phasma schtic. But for your stated pourpose of not radically editing it but making It a better movie you succeeded. Well done. A gold star to you and everyone involved in this project.
