Info Wanted: this is the best forum ever - which are the best preservation projects?

 (Edited)

i don’t even remember how i got here, i was googling something and i found a thread on here, it was MeBeJedi’s thread about his project and i read it all - it was a great read looking at people so committed and so enthusistic.

the closest i have come to something like this is transferring my old vhs onto dvd but of course they are poor so naturally i am looking to find laserdisc rips of the o-ot. looking at the rules i can only assume the only way to get hold of peoples projects are through torrents which will be a drag but needs must.

my real questions are about how many out there are complete, what makes them different and which are in PAL.

i really liked MeBeJedis attempts to fix the lightsabre issues, the stills looked great, if there were a PAL version of his project i would probably go for that. Bare in mind i haven’t read up on everyones projects yet. are there any that seem to be the most popular amongst users here?

thanks for reading and thanks to everyone involved for their hard work, i can’t wait to get involved in all this!

Thanks for the props, and welcome to OT.COM.

The only set in the works that's in PAL, I believe, it's Moth3r's. A version of ANH from that set was released recently, but I haven't seen it.

The EditDroid set is pretty hot around here right now, but the TR47/Cowclops is an old favorite.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

no worries it was a good read, though i never found out if you had completed the trilogy (hope your son is ok after the surgery though!)

i just read on the 'classic edition' and while it sounds great (a mixture of 2004 and the laserdisc) i can't help but feel it would be out of place in anyones colelction - i guess everyone needs a trilogy by the same person otherwise it won't seem like a complete trilogy (or maybe that's just me?).

Oh, Beastly, your disc is done, and I'll send it out tomorrow. Sorry for the wait.

Well, due to the nature of the video, I couldn't IVTC, and a lower bitrate was necessary to fit it on a DVD with 2 soundtracks (poor video is very difficult to compress) - but it's fun to listen to, at least.

are there big differences between these? is the crawl the oldest (correct) version?

also MeBeJedi - are yours finished? the most important thing i think is having a complete set that hold the same principles throughout - i can handle NTSC if i know it's a full set of the trilogy. I read up a little on Moth3r's and while it sounds great should i assume he is only working on ANH?

i really keen to know how many versions people here have and what they enjoy most and why - i don't suppose any of you lot are on msn? if so and you have spare time i would love to discuss the finer points of o-ot preservation michaeldcoates@hotmail.com

It's still a work in progress (there's a great deal of fine tuning involved), and there will be a couple of different versions as well.

Currently, the only versions around that have the original crawl are the EditDroid ANH, Garrett's "Classic Edition" and a MagFan version that was never finalized or distributed. The only one of those that's a complete trilogy set is EditDroid, and it also comes with a multi-angle option to either watch the original crawl or the "ANH" crawl.

Also, it's worth noting that these are all recreated crawls, as a good quality and full-length version of the original crawl has never been leaked.

is the MeBeJedi version the only one to have lukes sabre enhanced?

it seems the two full sets available are worth looking into in much more detail, but if you could sum them up at all, what would be the main differences between the EditDroid and Cowclops versions? from what i have read despite the Cowclops version being the oldest it still sets the benchmark but the EditDroid version seems to have raised the bar slightly, having not only the (remade) original crawl but also the chance to view the laserdisc version with the false crawl.

the classic edition does sounds amazing so it's probably worth getting just to see how well the two films mashed together turns out.

I wouldn't say my lightsabers were "enhanced" - you don't even notice it had regular playing speed. It was just something I was fiddling with, since I had some new software.

i thought it looked awesome! really well done and not a problem at all (despite DanielB's posts to the contrary) - i was very impressed with your skills.

there are so many people working on projects it's so hard to tell which one is best and how far they are with their work. a thread dedicated to a list of projects and their progress reports/availabilty would be really awesome to someone as new as myself. i've been reading for hours now and am only just starting to get to grips with all this.

also the Dr. Gonzo set is highly reverred by Rikter - is this one special in any way that sets it apart from others that are mentioned?

The Dr. Gonzo set is currently the only one that's anmorphic. Personally, the image on that set is a bit too soft for my liking, but it's certainly got a nice presentation and comes complete with the commentary from the laserdiscs. (However, the commentary is quite sparse, and segments of the movie during which the commentary plays are included as extras in the TR47 set, on the bonus disc.)

If you look around, there's information threads for nearly all of the sets around. Also, go into your personal preferences and set it to show older topics and then browse back, if there's anything you don't see.

As for live chatting MF.com has an irc channel which might be a place to hang out. Here's the general info: "server irc.nsane.net: 6667 channel #falconforum"

and here's some basics from [DFL] one of the operators there, on getting started:
If you are unfamiliar with IRC, you will need to download an IRC client, the most common of which is mIRC, available free at: www.mirc.com Just download the program, and follow the installation instructions.
mIRC is a pretty good client, and I'd suggest you install a reasonable script ontop of that to aid your downloading and protection.
failing that, the only commands you'll ever really need are
/server [insert server name]
/join #channel-name
(always read the on-join message for channel rules, and how to access fserves, request bots or pack downloads)
and finally
/dccallow +username
to add the provider to your safe list to prevent autoblocking their file sends
some channels require you to have a registered username to join them - it's simple type :-
/nickserv register help
for the list of registering commands for that server

Turned out to be a different individual, but still a good article:
Mr. Coates, glad to see you've migrated from the SWCutscene list. To get to know Mr. Coates check out this article of his: May 25, 1977: A Day Long Remembered

sorry to disappoint but that's not my article - the only articles i have written on star wars remain unpublished.

weird that this guy's name should be so similar to mine, but the missing s is i suspect, not a spelling mistake.

So Michael, are you actually on the Star Wars Cut Scenes list, or is that the other Michael Coate[s]?

Also, regarding EditDroid... I could be wrong, but I think it may actually be the oldest O-OT release, pre-dating the TR47. Which makes it even more impressive that it's the current talk of the town. The initial EditDroid version of Star Wars with the lesser quality transfer and alternate mono soundtrack came out at least as early as March 2002. The next two films followed soon after. When did the TR47/Cowclops come out?

And Michael's right... this is the best forum EVER. Outside of the Cut Scenes list (which isn't strictly a forum), of course. ;o)

No - ANH (v1.0) is finished. I am working on TESB at the moment.
