Yes - it can be done BUT you will COULD video quality - I suggest getting a player that can play both PAL and NTSC - You can find them as low as $35 at Wal-Mart OR get the Philips DVP642 - It's $70 but it will PLAY everything you throw at it - DivX, Xvid, VCD, XSVCD, MPEG2 VOB's and PAL or NTSC on the fly! NO buttons to push or anything.

I totally agree with Rikter. If your existing player does not play PAL, get one, especially for $35. System conversions never match the original. What i would be interested in is feedback from NTSC viewers concerning the quality of my transfers of 'The Mythology Of Star Wars' and 'From Star Wars To Star Wars'. These shows were shot in NTSC but were transmitted in PAL here in the UK.

To play PAL, don't you need a compatible TV as well?

I'm in the UK; my DVD player will do on-the-fly conversion to play NTSC as PAL, but the playback is jerky. If however I set the player to Auto, so NTSC is output in its native format, the TV will switch from 50Hz (PAL) to 60Hz (NTSC) and playback is smooth.

Similarly for those of you in the US, I would think that on-the-fly conversion from PAL (576 lines @ 50Hz) to NTSC (480 lines @ 60Hz) would result in loss in resolution and framerate problems. I've heard that multi-sync (50/60Hz) TVs, whilst common over here, are rare in the states.

There's also the colour signal issue. My TV can't decode NTSC 3.58 - but that doesn't affect me as I use a SCART connection in RGB mode. But if I use composite or s-video connections I get a black-and-white picture.

Anyone in NTSC-land care to clarify what exactly happens when you use one of these $35 players for PAL discs?

They look just fine - I've been playing PAL DVD's now for about 7-8 years with no problems at all except my old Apex 1500 played them kinda jerky like you mentioned but my $35 Apex playes them just fine (as does my Mintek 1600, Apex AD-600A and the DVP642). I've used about 5 TV's and a few projectors over the years and they were all NTSC.

I must say that - my PAL DVD's of Farscape and LEXX that I had looked WAY, WAY BETTER then my R1 NTSC versions of Farscape.

BUT, I have seen NTSC stuff converted to PAL and I think they look a bit stretched height wise and the PAL to NTSC stuff will look blurred or fuzzy and will sometimes show scan lines (sometimes even when deinterlaced during conversion) - that's what I've noticed anyway...

BH - your stuff looks GREAT!!!!

Description: (From vh1.com)

Few movies have reached the iconic status of the original Star Wars trilogy. A long-shot science fiction project that was rejected by multiple Hollywood studios, Star Wars (and its creator George Lucas) defied the skeptics and became one of the biggest pop culture phenomena of all time. Now VH1 is working with Lucasfilm to produce the ultimate oral history of the Star Wars years, When Star Wars Ruled the World. Timed to coincide with the DVD release of the original trilogy on September 21, 2004, this hour-long documentary will take viewers back to those rapturous moments when the whole world wanted to wield a light saber.

The show begins in the mid-1970s as George Lucas struggles to find a way to make his dream project a reality. Relive the incredible and unlikely impact of the first Star Wars movie, the sudden fame of unknowns like Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, and the way fans around the world fell in love, first with the movie and then with the action figures, pillow cases, C-3PO cereal and everything else they could - and did - line up to buy. Manufacturers could hardly keep up with the demand for anything and everything Star Wars (swamped by clamoring fans, the official Star Wars toymaker, Kenner, at one point had to settle for selling vouchers for yet-to-be-made action figures.)

The show will also chronicle the immense anticipation for the first Star Wars sequel, The Empire Strikes Back and the build-up to the climactic Return of the Jedi that had fans traveling hundreds of miles to visit the gates of the movie's set. Along the way, we will highlight the cultural impression made on millions of fans by Star Wars icons like Darth Vader, Ewoks, and Yoda, and lines like "I am your father," "That's no moon. It's a space station," and, "May the force be with you."

baby hum, a question for you: do any of the Japanese making-of laserdiscs NOT have burned-in subtitles? (I know there's more than one version of each out there...)

I've just checked out the Dr. Gonzo versions, and I love them... all except for the subtitles. Are you finding a way around that in your new transfers, or is it just something we have to live with?

Keep 'em coming...

As far as i know, both the original and reissues have burnt-in subtitles. If it's any consolation, my transfers come from the higher quality reissues.

Mine are simply BH's versions that were IVTC'd and converted to ac3 to fit the four specials on two DVD's. BH supplied the original source.

bh006 is dead! Long live bh006!

I'll explain. When 'When Star Wars Ruled The World' was broadcast in the UK, VH1 insist on having so many onscreen graphics that it sometimes distracts you from the show you're supposed to be watching. I find this really annoying. Enter SKot. He was kind enough to send me a raw TiVo rip of the show from the States (in it's native NTSC). Included on the disc were the bonus interviews available for streaming via vh1.com.

So, the plan is, I'm currently re-encoding the TiVo rip to eliminate the interlace problems (which also appeared on the Angrysun version. Is this a TiVo thing or was it broadcast like this?), giving it a PCM soundtrack AND encoding the bonus interviews.

This could be the first menu driven babyhum DVD. Watch this space, but i will possibly nuke the existing bh006.

OK. Things are changing.

As of my next release things will be a little different. There will be no numbering system. Just the title of the disc.

All DVD's will have menus, some will have DVD-ROM sections, most will have easter eggs and all will hopefully be an addition to your collections.

And just to whet your appetites here is a sneek peek at the possible next release.

NICE!!!!!!!!

- Babyhum, I think that you should keep the numbers in the NFO's though

Sounds like a great idea to combine those UK tabloid giveaway discs onto one DVD. Very sneaky of the Sun to spread an hours worth of material over two discs...(insert tabloid slagging insult here)...
Still it got me to buy the papers. Sassan frassan rassan....

If you've got access to a scanner, the Episode 3 Special Night and Day magazine that came with the Mail on Sunday would be also worth including on the disc. I found it more interesting than the CD-ROM.

Thanks for all the babyhum releases so far. Great stuff.

Babyhum,

Your menus look like they are going to be widescreen, but having played the Heroes disc on my PC, the video seems to have been letterboxed.

And I second Rikter's request for you to maintain the numbering system - you're like a Star Wars Criterion collection man!

The video and sound for both DVD's has been untouched and remain 4x3.
The menus (as with all future releases) are 16x9

That's the best compliment i could get! Thank you!

Okay you both win. The numbers will remain AND appear on the cover spine. Speaking of which (work in progress, still waiting for somebody to send me the zip file of Dolby, DVD and region artwork)

Author

baby hum,

does this mean you have 'official' cover/disc art for your releases or is that only for the newer ones? and if so are you going to make these available for download?

for the dolby, dvd, and region artwork you may want to check the file DVD-CD-Surround_Loggos.zip available in Rikter's SW Cover Torrent. You can use a client that allows you to select specific files and just download that file. Or i can send you the file via email if you want. Only thing is it doesnt have Region artwork, but should cover the rest of the artwork your looking for. I know some of the case art also has the region artwork on it so its should be possible to isolate that from the existing covers in a resolution that is acceptable.

and one last question....do you offer hard copy distribution or only download base. I realize that sending copies to everyone that wants one can be expensive/time consuming so id understand if you didnt. But currently only up to 3 has been released as a torrent and now your showing us artwork for 7, and id really like to get the collection of your releases and cant wait for the torrents
