Didn’t see the name until the Kenner figure came along. I doubt Kenner would make one up, so it must come from Lucasfilm? Maybe someone was a Ramones fan. 😉

What connotation does the name Jar Jar have on it’s own?

Where were you in '77?

I’m sure I’m not the first here to discover this but… holy balls, go see what happens when you put “use the force luke” as a search term into youtube. At first I thought I was having a seizure.

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

Nit the name. The idea that something can bring offense without intending to. (I was bringing up more how Jar Jar has been compared to Minstrel performances, if that makes it clearer.)

He’s named for the 19th century King Jaja of Nigeria. Some seriously deliberate racism there.

Now you’ve done it, he’s gonna post a 10,000 word essay about it.

Years before, Ja-Ja had been brought to Bonny as a humble Ibo slave. He was tall and handsome and proved a genius at trading. After most of the slaves were liberated, he led one faction of them in a revolt against George Pepple, the King of Bonny. He was beaten by the leader of a rival faction of ex- slaves and fled with his people to the safety of a neighbouring creek, Opobo. He was finished — so it appeared. Within a few years he emerged as the king of the biggest black trading empire on the coast. He sold 8,000 tons of palm oil a year to the white traders at Opobo and he imposed a ruthless monopoly on the black producers in the oil-palm forest inland. Anyone attempting to touch this monopoly, black or white, ended with their canoes smashed and their bodies floating in the creek.

– Thomas Pakenham, The Scramble for Africa, 1990, p. 192

We know that Jar Jar crashed at least one of Boss Nass’s canoes, excuse me, “heyblibbers”. And as Darths & Droids tells us, he’s also a genius.

The Aurebesh letter for X does not resemble the english letter at all. Therefore, the retcon for Aurebesh’s existence in place of the English in ANH means that there should be no way anyone could’ve known to name a ship an X-Wing.

Except that they apparently have kept the English lettering (I don’t think that’s the correct term for it, though) in the canon as a sort of “fancy” script, i.e. the galactic equivalent to cursive handwriting.

I don’t think the retcon was necessary either but *shrug*. They did it anyway and we have to live with it now.

See, I don’t have a problem with Aurebesh (other than the ANH change). If the ANH English text had stayed, I’d never have thought of the X-Wing name as a problem, but now that it was changed, it’s a problem. The cursive explanation is interesting, if silly.

Pretty sure Lobot is a reference to lobotomy, given that his brain has been mostly replaced by his cyborg implants.

The shape ‘X’ can be referred to as an “Ecks” in universe without it being an Aurebesh letter. This does not explain A, B and Y-wings, unless they’re actually Osk, this-letter-didn’t-even-make-sense-in-the-first-place and Vev-wings respectively in Basic and are just translated to our letters for us.

TFA now available in an oldskool “Laserdisc/LP” style release…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4pCno1wRI4

Note that it’s the new “Collector’s edition” release with commentary and bonus disc with all the extra features but without the 3D blu-ray disc, for the same price of £19.99.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-Wars-Awakens-Sleeve-Blu-ray/dp/B01LY3PI1H

So if like me, the 3D disc was just going to be a fancy coaster anyway, it might be worth getting this unusual release instead for no extra pennies.

(Shame the artwork is a bit bland)

That’s actually pretty cool.

If they released that here in Canada I might look at getting one.

I’m surprised that one of the various SEs hasn’t changed it so Luke wears his poncho more often on Tatooine. And while we’re at it, why not get rid of that awful jacket he wears during the medal ceremony?

Seems next to impossible, but I’d love it if someone could do that!

No. Also, get out.

I really wish someone would/could put Luke in his flight suit during the briefing. With him still in his ordinary clothes, it makes it seem like he just got there and is totally unprepared.

In honor of Orson Welles, I humbly suggest renaming the Gonk droid the “Bang From Outside” droid.
