In what ways did TFA completely nail it, either in terms of filmmaking or in terms of continuity?

Bringing back the original voice of Admiral Ackbar, Erik Bauersfeld, (now 93!) is a huge plus in my book. Yeah, it’s easy to record movie dialog just about anywhere now, but that they went that extra mile just makes me happy.

So that was really him? I thought so. I remember seeing something right after the news broke that Ackbar would be in the film about how they ought to get him back, but I hadn’t heard for sure whether they actually did.

Star Wars vs. A New Hope - Which do you say and why?

I think it has more to do with drawing in new fans who maybe haven’t seen all of the other ones. If they put “Episode VII” front and center In the TFA marketing I could see how it might look kind of daunting for newbies. It made sense for the prequels because the same casual viewers might not have understood at the time where those fit in the timeline, but now that we’re moving forward again I think all that Disney is concerned with communicating is “this is the new one”.

Anyone else finish film school in the last couple years only to find themselves more or less unemployable in the real world? After the umpteenth interview that went nowhere I moved back home and enrolled in a community college biotech program. I’m finding these classes engaging enough, but the overall situation’s a hell of a bitch.

Still a little dull on Tatooine, though. A happy medium would be spectacular.

That’s how any of the OOT versions should look, though. I think any expectation for vibrant blue skies and bright sand is bleedthrough of SE memories.

It’s not even so much the skies. I like the bright yellow Tatooine of Harmy’s version better than the beiges of the Silver Screen, but then when we get to the Death Star and everything is vibrantly blue-green it’s too much.

I can’t claim to have seen any actual prints myself (except the 97 SE, but A. That’s irrelevant beyond the fact that it was supposedly based on the technicolor, and B. I was seven years old and not exactly paying attention to this kind of thing yet) but everything I’ve seen here that tries to approximate the technicolor looks too green to me. Particularly the Death Star interior stuff. If the Silver Screen version is accurate to the Eastman, then that looks closer to the platonic ideal of Star Wars I have in my head. Still a little dull on Tatooine, though. A happy medium would be spectacular.

This 1:38 - 2:10 has been stuck in my head too

When I heard this I knew the spirit of Star Wars had made it’s resurgence.

See, that part sounded a little too ROTS-y for me. I really don’t like that DUNDUNDUNDUNNAH-DUNDUN! horn thing that happens there and is all over the Sith score. Soundtrack opinions seem to be way more diverse than I ever imagined.

I honestly can’t recall any themes from ROTS besides “Battle of the Heroes”, which I thought was a lot weaker than “Across the Stars”, “Duel of the Fates”, and even “Trade Federation March”. TFA has at least five themes that have been stuck in my head for more than a month now (“Rey’s Theme”, “March of the Resistance”, “The Jedi Steps”, and Kylo’s two motifs). I really can’t understand why so many people are rating this score so poorly.

But the Anakin/Padmé relationship itself isn’t earned. There’s no reason why Padmé should fall in love with Anakin (and several very good ones why she shouldn’t). George just keeps telling us that they’re in love throughout Clones, and by the time we get to the heavy stuff in Sith we’re just more willing to roll with it because it’s obvious that this is what we’re getting one way or another. Expectations have been lowered to the point where I see the shot of the necklace, I recognize that it’s supposed to resonate emotionally, and if I’m in a good mood I say “yeah, all right, I guess that’s good”. When I stop to consider how sloppy and hamfisted the romance it’s calling back to actually was, though, it loses all resonance.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

I’m all for it. I was worried that the rapid-fire release schedule would rob these movies of their specialness. I’m happy to let them breathe a little bit. A saga film every other year and spinoffs in between is more than enough. Plus, there’s something nice about the “every year at Christmas” format. It makes me think fondly about seeing the LOTR movies in middle school.
