What are you reading?
Time

Right now, Green Shadows, White Whale: A Novel of Ray Bradbury’s Adventures Making Moby Dick with John Huston in Ireland. I just finished The 42nd Parallel by John Dos Passos. Thinking about finally getting around to The Stand when I’m done the Bradbury, but the page count has me skittish. I’ve also been reading George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas between novels as a sort of palate cleanse.

Yoda was really desecrated in AOTC to be fair

Yeah, but it went above and beyond in Sith. “Not if anything to say about it I have!”

Padme was misused throughout the PT but her death was inexcusable. It really shows George didn’t even ponder about how his assbackwards ideas would effect the OT

See, this is one of my biggest beefs with ROTS. By that point, Lucas was at his peak as far as fucking around with stuff that was established in the OT is concerned. TPM is a very boring film with a couple of profoundly annoying characters, but it did very little to screw with the fiber of the established story.

Also, beyond OT ramifications, it’s just super weak that Padme starts the series as an ass-kicking leader of men and ends up dying instead of taking care of her kids and helping her senate buddies organize the Rebellion because she doesn’t want to live without her shitty boyfriend.

This is a problem with the entirety of the PT and ROTS has the best CGI effects by far. AOTC has the worst.

ROTS’s effects do indeed look better than AOTC’s, but what I meant was that the completely digitized environments got out of hand. That Dr. Seuss looking planet in the Jedi purge was just ridiculous.

Yet another thing that is seen throughout the entire PT and something that ROTS is better at…for the most part.

Definitely a problem that all of them have, but “No, YOU will die!” “From my point of view, the Jedi are evil!” “UNLIMITED POWER!” “Only a Sith deals in absolutes.” “Love can’t save you Padme, only my new powers can do that!” and everything out of Yoda’s mouth are all on par with “I don’t like sand”.

What would be the best "Snoke is secretly [pre-established character] all along" outcome?
Time

Didn’t Kenner come close to doing a toy line at one point that was based around the premise that Tarkin somehow survived the Death Star and came back to cause trouble after ROTJ? It’s a ridiculous notion, but I guess it was on the table at some level thirty odd years ago. Of course, the canon novel Tarkin and the handful of TCW arcs he was involved in rule out his being a secret Force user, so even if you could come up with a good reason for him to be alive after Yavin, him being Snoke would require yet another insane leap.

Bingowings, I like the Balok idea, but I can’t get my head around this Leia = Snoke thing I’ve seen you throw out a few times. What on earth would her motivation be?

I think if it’s going to be anyone we’ve heard of before, it’ll be Plagueis, but I also think that it’s far more likely Snoke isn’t someone we’ve already been introduced to. I’ve traditionally been down on the Plagueis theory more because the people who buy into it tend to be pretty obnoxious about it than because I think it would be an automatically bad idea. Canonically, the character only exists in those few sentences spoken by Palpatine in ROTS. They could really do anything they want with him.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

I feel like those who are being super critical of the score either haven’t experienced as many repeat viewings as we who really dug the movie or else weren’t interested enough to really live with the soundtrack for a while after Disney put it on YouTube. Now that I’m very familiar with it, I realize there’s so much more going on than one viewing can convey. There are at least five new themes that I couldn’t get out of my head if I wanted to. It’s definitely a score that rewards continued listening.

I believe there actually is a Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina-style short story collection based around the denizens of Maz’s bar on the way. I don’t feel strongly one way or the other about it.

That actually makes perfect sense to me. I don’t mind the idea, but I’m skeptical about the writing.
Some of the already existing backstories to those characters seem kinda weird and silly.
(The Crimson Corsair is a pretty cool name though, has a bit of an early Marvel SW comics feel to it.)

Also, are the “Tales…” stories still canon?

EDIT:
I assume that you were talking about this?; http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Tales_From_a_Galaxy_Far,_Far_Away_Volume_I:_Aliens

That’s the one. Pretty sure it’s the Journey to The Force Awakens stories collected with a few new ones. I didn’t actually read the ones that have already been released, but I looked at some synopses and was interested enough that I’ll probably look at the collection when it’s out. Probably won’t spend money on it, but it may be worth the trip to the library.

Also, nothing before September 2014’s A New Dawn is canon except the films, the Clone Wars cartoon, and a 4-issue Darth Maul comic that was based on unproduced TCW scripts.

This is awesome. I really hope they put the effort into nailing the asymmetrical helmet.

EDIT: just saw the previous comment. This seems like a good sign.

Also, this recent rash of celebrity deaths has me wondering who could step in to voice Vader should anything happen to JEJ (he is in his eighties, after all). Keith David, perhaps?

I trust Lord and Miller to pick the actor that will be best for this film.

I did as well until I saw the shortlist. Miles Teller, seriously?

Miles Teller is a talented actor. Did you see Whiplash?

He was good in that, but he’s one of the most unlikable actors around today. That actually worked well for Whiplash. It wouldn’t for a Han Solo movie.
