Watched this last night, and good lord does it look wonderful. All of the 35mm stuff is integrated so much more smoothly than it was on the workprint. Now I’m really hoping that debated SW 2.6 actually happens, because this near-GOUTless wonder is so far ahead of the other two.
Five minutes left and I can’t find my blu-ray burner! Gah! I suppose if it doesn’t turn up I can always hook my laptop up to the TV, but I really wanted to put it on a disc right away.

God damn, I just watched Jurassic Park a week or two ago, but I might have to again tomorrow (I didn’t know this 35mm version existed before now, so there’s an excuse). That was the first movie I ever obsessed over, before Star Wars even.

I think I’ve got a DVD-5 folder of the dr. gonzo transfer that has it. I can throw that on my google drive if anyone needs it, but I’m sure someone else could do the actual editing much faster than me.

Oh god, I was thinking of six or seven different lines when I made that post but I’d forgotten that one. A lot of people say AOTC is the worst for dialogue because of the sand thing, but ROTS has it beat in terms of sheer volume.

Are the snowspeeders GOUT? They’ve always seemed kind of off to me and I don’t think it’s just not being used to the optical compositing.
VC sounds too much like smooth jazz for me to take it seriously. It’s also very solemn, but I’ll admit it gets better towards the end right before the cut to credits. I also hate the stupid shots of people cheering on all the other fake CGI planets.
If you think VC sounds like smooth jazz, you’ve never actually heard any smooth jazz. VC sounds more like those new-agey Peruvian pan pipe bands that play at the mall.
Yeah, I will definitely do some workprints for v3.0s - starting from scratch, there will be a large probability of errors.
We’ll see about v2.6 - if I did one, it would be just quickly splicing TN1’s shots in place of GOUT shots into the v2.5 lossless master and maybe fixing some of the more obvious color problems (it would probably end up looking somewhat like the Respecialized Edition).
Is working on a v2.6 really worth it? I’d much prefer to have 3.0 done a couple of weeks earlier than to have a SW v2.6! It almost seems irrelevant and a waste of your precious time Harmy!
Didn’t he say elsewhere that the 3.0s would likely take a couple years to put together? I think I’d rather have a 2.6 for that long wait than shave off what ultimately seems like a a negligible amount of time.
Speak for yourself, I actually enjoy agonizing over canonicity. The convoluted spider web of the overall thing is more important to me than the entertainment factor of any particular story. If a canon story is good, so much the better, but there’s this other more objective seeming value that comes from the idea that something “counts”. The fact that it’s all one system appeals to me enough that I’m willing to put up with a lot, because even the things that suck bring new minutiae to the table to be scrutinized and debated. I’ll admit it can feel kind of masochistic at times, but hey, I’m a consenting adult. I think it’s a huge part of what draws me towards these sprawling fictional universe franchises in the first place, and it’s probably why I never felt any desire to dabble in fan fiction.
Anyway, I read the last two parts of Vader Down today and I’m extremely curious to see what happens next with regards to Dr. Aphra.
Nice to see that so many TCW alumni were included. Their involvement in all of the Celebration streaming stuff I saw back last spring left me with the impression that they’re a good group.
Nothing we weren’t already pretty sure about, but I guess Gwendoline Christie confirmed that Phasma will be back for VIII. I don’t feel like tracking down the original interview, but I’ve seen it covered in all the usual places over the course of the weekend.

Right, well Lapti Nek is the only part I noticed where the background volume was a little loud for the commentary, but it’s still clear enough that I don’t think it needs adjusting.
I think I might have made it sound worse than it actually is. Jedi Rocks is largely drowned out by the added Lapti Nek track, but there are a few big horn hits that make it through. It’s very similar to the bits of dialogue from the Han and Jabba scene that are audible on the Star Wars commentary, but the fact that these are two pop songs played on top of each other rather than dialogue and ambient score makes it jump out more for me.
I’m at about the 70 minute mark and I’m thinking I’m going to put a pin in this and finish in the morning. So far I haven’t noticed any sync issues. The mix is a little awkward for Lapti Nek, but I’m not sure what else you could do with it. The song is right on the edge of being too loud for the commentary, but if you bring it down the snatches of Jedi Rocks that come through will be more noticeable and distracting. I don’t think it’s worth messing with; anyone who’s interested in watching it with the commentary is going to have a good enough understanding of what this project is to be willing to roll with it.
I’ll give the 2011 a once-over tonight. I was having trouble figuring out what to watch anyway.
Prequel-based reasoning so it may not fly here, but could some of the in-universe prejudice stem from the Clone Wars?
God, I love the SW BD with laserdisc colors.
I’ve always figured this has a lot to do with the model and/or function of the particular droid. A translator like C-3PO or an onboard mechanic like R2-D2 or BB-8 is going to be interacting a lot with sentient organics, so they’ve probably got much beefier AI to the point where they’re considered “people”. Other ones with more specialized functions like Gonk droids or Mouse droids probably don’t have nearly as much computing power, and thus don’t have that kind of self awareness.
