Get ready for "Star Wars - Shroud of the Sith", a radical fan edit of "The Phantom Menace"
Time

Also, speaking of Jar-Jar’s voice…I’m still having a bit of trouble with it. I’m just not satisfied with what I’ve got so far, and I consider his voice to be one of the most important aspects of this edit. I’ll post some comparison links soon, but for everyone who has seen an edit with a redubbed Jar Jar…what worked, and what didn’t? Is there a version you were completely happy with? Is there a version you disliked?

Or, if you were to have your choice of voice actors for a remake of Episode I, who would you want for Jar-Jar?

My one request: edit Jar Jar Binks out of all of the sequences on Tatooine. With his high-pitched voice, his constant clumsiness, and his cartoonish face in almost every shot, it is difficult to enjoy the movie.

It may or may not be possible, but it would make the movie a thousand times better.

Also, I like the chosen one prophesy, and I have a feeling it will be referenced in Episode VIII. Luke may have traveled to the first Jedi temple in order to research the prophesy. Additionally, the Jedi Order is a religious order with mystical powers, and a belief in prophesy is consistent with that. So I would not cut the prophesy, especially since it is likely to be referenced in future Star Wars films.

Well, it’s a bit late for that. I can’t do much about his face, but Jar-Jar will have a new voice, if that helps.

And if you like the chosen one prophecy, there are dozens of fan edits out there that keep it. I don’t hate the prophecy, but I like the idea of everything essentially having chaotic consequences, instead of it all being foretold. And honestly, removing the prophecy in Episode I only required the removal of like three or four lines, so is it really that important to the plot?

As for the potential reference in Episode VIII…well, I’ll cross that road if and when I get there. These edits are meant to blend the PT more seamlessly into the OT (which is another reason I removed the “chosen one” prophecy), not necessarily the ST. If Episode VIII calls back to the prophecy (which I really doubt, to be honest), then I’ll probably release updated versions of my prequel edits to reflect the reference. But until then, there will be no mention of the prophecy in my edits. At least, not directly.

Its coming. I’ve previewed a rough cut for some friends, and they all seemed to really like it. Right now, I’m just going back and fixing some audio issues. I originally wasn’t using the 5.1 audio for some scenes I cut early in the process, so I’m going back and updating those.

I’m also re-re-dubbing the Boss Nass stuff, as the main issue my friends had with my cut was Nass’ voice sounding too similar to one of the Neimoidians’ voices. And after watching it completely though, I absolutely agree with them. So I’m redoing his voice from the ground up.

There are also a few SFX additions I made that need touching up on, and one that I decided to add after my screening with my friends.

It doesn’t help that I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so it’s tough for me to say something is “done”, as I’m constantly thinking of ways to improve it.

The Blackened Mantle (3-in-1 Prequel Trilogy Fan Edit) is finally back on YouTube!
Time

The Blackened Mantle is the only edit I’ve seen thus far which had me fully invested in the story. My only reservation about keeping it as my “definitive” prequel viewing option is how it’s so stylistically different from the saga, which ironically is what makes me like it so much. It’s a stupid reason, I know. But I want that base-level of continuity to be preserved in my collection.

Apart from that, The Blackened Mantle is perfect, and I can’t recommend it enough.

I’ve toyed with the idea of recreating it with my own color-graded sources and a few tweaks of my own…but I haven’t found the time yet.

If a simple scene like that took you that long, you are either doing something wrong or using the wrong software, this little clip only took me like 10 minutes.

Well, I was only able to work on it in rare moments of free time, so that factored into it. I’m also still learning the ropes. Had I worked on it straight through, it would have taken me considerably less time, but probably still longer than 10 minutes or so. I probably had at least a few hours of work embedded into that scene, just trying to perfect the blending.

That being said, the clip you made in the desert w/o Jar-Jar looks better than I was expecting. Great job!

Actually, it would be awesome if someone could remove Jar Jar from the entire movie along with deleted scenes and release it as a resource. (so in the future, it is easier for fan editors to put out a proper movie)

I could probably do that, but imo removing Jar Jar altogether leaves a lot of key scenes on the cutting room floor, and it would probably make the cuts far too jarring for a smooth progression.

Unless you’re talking about physically rotoscoping him out, instead of cutting around him. In which case, I don’t think anyone here would have the patience to sit down and do all of that. It took me the better part of a week just to accurately rotoscope one scene of Dooku sighing from Episode II. Doing the same for all of Jar Jar would be a nightmare.

Something I’d love to see is Dooku being added to the funeral scene in TPM and possibly even to the scene of the Jedi (and Palpatine) landing on Naboo. And while doing that, you could also replace the horrible Samuel L. Jackson double who looks nothing like him but plays Windu in that scene.

These things are probably quite hard to do but I thought I’d throw the idea out there just in case.

My edit of TPM (“Shroud of the Sith”) has Dooku added to the funeral scene. I haven’t released it yet (still working on a few things), but I have a link to preview the Dooku funeral scene somewhere in the thread for my edit. The preview is a bit more rough than the final version, but you’ll get the idea.

Help: looking for... Special Editions minus controversial/stupid changes?
Time

I’m working on a 1080p “pseudo-despecialized edition” of A New Hope that has some of the sfx additions from the SE peppered in (only those that I felt genuinely enhanced the original). Basically, what I’m doing with my Episode I edit will be done to all the prequels, and then I’ll be making minimal adjustments in the OT to keep a steady flow of continuity throughout my edits of the saga. It’s a little early in the process and wouldn’t be completed for a while, though. Just throwing it out there haha.

My problem with the lightsaber duels in the PT is seeing everyone swinging for each other’s lightsabers all the time, instead of their bodies. Sure, the choreography was very well-practiced, but that was the problem.

A real lightsaber fight wouldn’t be practiced in advance. It would be spontaneous. They shouldn’t know where to swing for EVERY move, before it even happens. In my opinion, that reduces the impact of even having a lightsaber.

And they whipped them out for every little thing. In the OT, when a lightsaber was drawn, the room got quiet. In the PT, it was every other scene. I get that it was a different time period, but I don’t care for that excuse. If Lucas had simply limited the amount of time you saw a lightsaber in the PT, he wouldn’t even have to write a spectacular scene for those moments. You would immediately feel excitement from the sight of the lightsaber. If Obi-Wan had never used his lightsaber until the fight with Darth Maul in Episode I, the scene would have been infinitely more impactful with the exact same shots.

You really have musical timing down! Stay tuned, my music free tracks are coming along, you’ll be able to synchronize it to the original movie so you should be able to just drop it into your edit.

You magnificent bastard.

😃

I may do this for the PT as well if anyone wants me to

You’ve got my vote for the PT. As an editor who has done this for a few segments of Episode I, I know how much work it would be. You’d be a godsend.

I’d leave the bit abou Kylo referring to Vader as “grandfather”. If the idea is to remove this to preserve the Ben Solo reveal, I still think “grandfather” would work well, leading the audience to believe Kylo to be the son of Luke…only to reveal him to be the son of Leia.

Just my two cents. This is also running under the assumption that someone would watch this edit without seeing the original beforehand.

Info Wanted: Have there been any decent edits of TPM which try a different opening scene?
Time

I’m nearly done with my edit of TPM, and while a few things are rendering, I’ve been toying with editing a different opening scene. The particular one I’m messing with is having the opening crawl/starfield pan down to the Neimoidian invasion of Naboo. It’s halfway decent, but it got me wondering if there have been any edits that do something similar, or try for a different opening entirely.

Any suggestions? I’d be interested in seeing one.

Oh okay, that makes sense. Thanks for the reply! Looking forward to seeing what you’ve done.

And I definitely agree with having Rey veer deeper into the dark than Luke ever did. I think this trilogy should be about Rey AND Kylo, though. Rey veers into the dark, while Kylo veers into the light, perhaps taking the name Ben again. Could be an interesting dynamic.

So when they go to save Rey, where are they going now that Starkiller isn’t a thing? Or do you still refer to it as the First Order’s base, without revealing it’s shape and capabilities?

I’m intrigued, but I’m worried that taking out the Starkiller stuff hurts other storylines and creates plot holes. But I’d be more than happy to be proven wrong!

Idea: The Star Wars TV series - movies into tv length episodes edits
Time

That’s a cool idea. And with it being a “television series”, you wouldn’t be confined to abiding by the conventions of the films. You could essentially do whatever you want with them.

As for the “theme”, I’d definitely pull from one of the animated series, or one of the video games. Are you going “opening montage” style, as in, using clips of each character to introduce them? Or more like an “opening sequence”, as in, something like the Netflix Daredevil series?

Will each 20 minute “episode” have its own opening crawl, or are you doing away with that?

Sorry for all the questions haha. I’m just thinking of the possibilities.

Best HD Version(s) of Prequel Trilogy Deleted Scenes? Check out Hal 9000's package!
Time

While working on my Episode I edit, I’ve been toying with the idea of including a couple of deleted scenes. Where could I find HD versions of these? I’ve seen a few on YouTube, but I imagine there are better versions out there in the world. I’m looking for the absolute best versions available.

Mod Edit: reading through the thread… for anyone looking for deleted scenes… Hal 9000 is your man with his intriguing ‘Prequel FanEdit Care Package’ 👍

(this thread was previously named ‘Help: looking for… Best HD Version(s) of Prequel Deleted Scenes?’ - and has been renamed so it is easier for members to find deleted PT scenes)
