The Phantom Menace - general discussion thread
Time

I have to admit: Back then I've seen TPM thirteen times in the theatre with a clique of fellow enthusiasts. I was among those who had mixed feelings about the huge amount of distance in time to the OT's release.

Yet, even knowing that Lucas' vision could impossibly match anything that the millions of fans had imagined in all these years, I was willing to postpone my judgement until the last of the films was out.

In the mean time I'd enjoy that there'd be a new StarWars trilogy, just for the heck of it. The joy of anticipation and discussion about what would be, how the two stories might connect...

Looking back, I have to say the anticipation and sharing that experience is by far more memorable to me than the movies in itself.

Most of you will probably disagree, but for me, TPM is still the best of the three prequel movies. Simply because the Jedi combat stuff is very well done, imho. Way better than anything we've seen in the other two prequel movies.

The other two films reek of desperation to top the final battle against Darth Maul. The sheer stupidity and mind numbing missattempts at that alone, kept me cringing in my seat when watching AotC and RotS.

Peter Jackson's take on film-revisionism on the example of Lord of the Rings
Time

[Source: Digg Dialogg with Peter Jackson]

Interviewer: "Now that it has been around ten years since you actually shot footage for Lord of the Rings, is there anything that you can see in retrospect that you would have changed?"

Peter Jackson: "Sure. I can't give you a specific example, but absolutely. You know, if I was making Lord of the Rings today I would do a lot of things differently. Because you just naturally after ten years.

You get more expierence, the technology has improved, there's things we couldn't do ten years ago that we could do much easier now. But, however ... the other part of the answer is that I wouldn't want to change a thing.

Because any movie represents a snapshot in time, it's you freezing a moment in time, which represents the experience of the filmmaker at that time, it represents popular culture at that time, it represents the level of technology at that time, and you know the Lord of the Rings movies that we made, they belong to 2001, 2002, 2003.

They belong to those years and collectively our expierence as it was at that time. They would be different today. And you know, its not about making them different. I mean, those movies exist and they should stay the exact way they are.

Just wanted to share this with you guys. Hope it's not too far off-topic, since it's not directly associated with StarWars.

Jabba the Hutt Strategy
Time

When I first saw the movie as a kid, and saw Luke's black outfit ... force choking the gammorean guards and how arrogantly he threatened to kill Jabba, I was afraid he had already turned to the dark side. To me it didn't feel at all like he had any other plan than to eradicate Jabba and his gang.

Even nowadays I think the whole rescue scene depicts the corrupting influence of his new found powers (i.e. 'delusions of grandure').

Anyone else here have a love/hate relation with Revenge of the sith ?
Time
I hate the fact, that every 'old jedi' is all of a sudden expressing a nack for gymnastic exaggeration. I mean it was OK for Darth Maul, but it kinda wore off to be special when ye olde Dooku and Palps also hop around like Master 'Flubber' Yoda. D;

A bit more dignity and variety in the jedi fighting styles would have ben VERY welcome.

Count Dooku approaches captured Palpatine and his two Jedi liberators;
glances at set of stairs to the right, glances at set of stairs to the left;
digital double does a 'whipper hopper' over railing; ignites lightsaber in flight;
lands and says "HAHA!" - *snore* -_-

Lucas wearing "Han shot first" shirt during Indy IV production

Like some people already said, I don't think he's put so much thought into which shirt he wears on production. Probably just a way to promote Lucasfilm merchandising. It's still funny (because of the irony) and a slap into OT fan's faces at the same time. The fact that it was likely not intentional, doesn't change that.

Lucas wearing "Han shot first" shirt during Indy IV production
Time

Just watched the first on-set footage of Indy IV on the official site, when I noticed Lucas was wearing sw.com’s “Han shot first” shirt in the shot he appears in. Gotta love the irony of him actually wearing this (as if the irony of Lucasfilm cannibalizing this slogan wasn’t enough already).

Mod Edit: A working link to the StarWars•com store for the ‘Han Shot First’ t-shirt worn by George featured above, can be found here:-

and a photo of the man himself wearing the t-shirt…

Theatrical Version of StarWars ANH at Celebration Europe?
Time
Excerpt from the latest SW.com Newsletter:

Ian McDiarmid at Celebration Europe!
Tony Award-winning actor Ian McDiarmid, whose iconic portrayal of Senator Palpatine and the Emperor in the Star Wars Saga raised suave villainy to a new level, will make a rare public appearance at Star Wars Celebration Europe on Friday, July 13 to help commemorate the Saga's 30th anniversary.

McDiarmid will be a special guest of Lucasfilm Ltd. and event organiser Cards Inc. during the Opening Ceremonies at ExCeL London. The Opening Ceremonies will be hosted by Steve Sansweet, head of fan relations for Lucasfilm Ltd., and will include a special one-time-only screening of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope .

Admission to the Opening Ceremonies, scheduled for 6:30 pm on the grounds just west of the ExCeL Center, is included in the cost of a three-day or a Friday pass to Star Wars Celebration Europe, the biggest Star Wars party Europe has ever seen, and the first official Star Wars event to be held outside of the U.S.
If this is true, I really envy the people who'll have the choice to attend to this event!

EDIT: Hm. Just found the link to the list-of-events on SW.com: Link.
The entry there sounds more like it's just the special edition version. It's the "special one-time-only screening" part of the newsletter that got my hopes up.
I'm still not entirely sure, I guess we'll have to wait what people report from the actual event.
