The Last Jedi: Legendary (Released)

alright here are my 2 cents

  • New opening crawl to provide subtle political exposition, inspired by Reddit user noodle-flinger:

The galaxy is in chaos. With both the First Order and the Resistance decimated, each is desperate to snuff out the other and fill the power vacuum left by the extinction of the Republic.

General Leia Organa lives in hope that Jedi Master Luke Skywalker will return and restore a spark of hope to the fight against the rising tyranny.

But the Resistance base has been exposed. As the First Order speeds toward the Rebel base, the brave heroes mount a desperate escape…

Hope x2 in the second line. maybe just remove the 2nd instance.

• Cut Luke’s joke about Jakku.

I actually really liked this because it’s the one instance in the movie that helps place a planet into the SW universe with a reference and a coloring of that world. All other planets are barely ever referenced and they don’t have a feeling of place / lived in / character.
Also it’s one of the jokes that much more subtle and on words rather than slapstick or too obvious so i’d keep it over most others.

• Experiment with removing the caretakers. I’d say keep them if the third lesson deleted scene can be used, or else remove them. (Seems like the third lesson would be their payoff, so keep them in that event or else remove them as they serve no purpose without that scene. Let Luke be lonely.)

I’m heavily in favor of this so long as the deleted scenes of the 3rd lesson doesn’t involve them. Everything we see of the island makes it look remote, uninhabited and Luke going hermit so they make no sense and they are only here to create chep laughs with Rey.

• If deleted scenes make this possible, give Rey her promised third lesson from Luke.

YES

• Undecided on removing the entire horse chase. If so, simply have Finn and Rose follow DJ out of the cell and we will revisit them later already in hyperspace. If the horse chase stays, perhaps cut away from DJ after he asks BB8, “Did you do this?” in order to remove more ‘Droids’ stuff. If the horse chase is cut, either remove the final scene with broom boy, or else just remove the closeup with the ring.

Not a fan at all of the horse stampede scene but if it is problematic to remove entirely then at least cut down severely.
I do like the final scene with the boy though, not sure why it’s hated so much.

• Trim Snoke’s dialogue pre-death which makes an obvious outcome painfully so.

Curious about this. I’m weary about removing any Snoke since I feel he was already cut short (ha!) but it could help the scene.

• Trim Finn’s nonsense as he fights Phasma, particularly his “Hey!”

Please keep ‘rebel scum’ though. I thought it was a great line, if very fanservicy

How do you feel about Rose ‘saving’ Finn and subsequent kiss? To me it makes no sense. the later if only because they met like 24h prior.

Also I personally completely disliked the Leia superman moment so I’d love to see that go.

Actually, I figured out that Luke wasn’t real in that scene very early on because I was specifically watching to see what saber he had. When I saw the Graflex I was super confused…and then it clicked. I was disappointed in that moment.

He also looks way younger like in the flashback scenes. I noticed his dyed goatee right away so that was also a giveaway.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Fan Edit Ideas thread...

I thought that was one of the things Rogue One did the best, honestly.

It really amplified the meaning of “hope” at the end of the movie and into ANH, as that scene demonstrated how jaded and un-unified the “Rebel Alliance” had become prior to the Death Star plans being stolen and Luke Skywalker coming into the picture. Idk, it was one of the things this movie did to make you appreciate the heroes and events of the OT more; how the universe at large - outside of Luke, Leia and Han’s personal bubbles and character arcs - was affected and influenced by the actions of the OT heroes. We knew the Rebel Alliance was losing before, but Rogue One showed how the Empire’s consistent dominance over them progressively broke their collective strength and resolve, and fractured their unity to the point where the Empire damn near won.

I personally thought the theme, and more specifically the word “hope” was tossed around way too much in the movie. We know ep IV is called ‘a new hope’ and it felt like they were trying to remind us every fifteen minutes ‘hey! this ties in to ep IV!’ hope!!’

More to the point, I don’t deny that grabbing the plans brought all that hope to the alliance, hope they lacked at that point. What I didn’t like is how they made it seem that Jyn was the only reason they bothered to go get those plans. It made the Rebel Alliance, all those iconic figures in it like Mothma, look weak.

Drakul, thanks and welcome! No, I won’t be editing Rogue One. I sincerely hope not to edit any more Star Wars films after this one, but we’ll see. This limited edit of TFA is sort of a compromise between editing and not editing it, and ideally will be a stairstep from radical edits of the prior three films to enjoying new films as they are. (The original idea for the SKB was too elegant and sublime to pass up.)

Makes sense 😃
I’m downloading TFA but it’s slow going, I’ll keep you posted.

Restore Anakin mentioning that attachment is forbidden for a Jedi Knight, which emphasizes the motif of forbidden love and explains why they needed to keep the relationship secret.

Restore the emotional fireplace scene when Anakin confesses his feelings, which emphasizes the motif of forbidden love and explains why they needed to keep the relationship secret.

Restore the love confession scene and Anakin’s surprise reaction to Padmé, which emphasizes the motif of forbidden love and explains why they needed to keep the relationship secret.

Oh god, this is the worst writing and acting in the entirety of the seven Star Wars films.

These scenes are the reason for fan edits.

Edit: wait. I didn’t realize you were the same person in the three threads asking for the edits as well as suggesting these changes. So these suggestions are based on cut lists. I think you should wait until watching the edits and see how you feel afterwards. If you still think these are good ideas, I have a feeling you may want to make your own edit, as the ideas are probably not popular (and everyone has their own idea of ideal cut lists).

Those never bothered me half as much as the stupid frolicking / hills are alive scenes.

As far as continuity goes, I’ll take Padme living over C3PO keeping his memories forgetting to mention that he’s back on his home planet where everyone is probably named Skywalker so don’t worry about it. 😃 (I think the actual reason was to remove the Tantive. But that’s a bit of fan service I don’t really mind).

Haha! I agree with all both of you said. Either way I’m fine with your choice and I can’t really go down this rabbit hole discussion without having seen it.
