Judging by ESB & ROTJ original box office gross, here is why Lucas started to change
Time
Its fairly common knowledge that Marquand was, for all intents and purposes, Lucas' sock. For ESB he gave Kirshner control over everything and Lucas only visited the set three days. The movie was a management disaster and the final product dissapointed him. So on ROTJ, he found a director that was young and moldable, that wouldn't impose his own ideals as much, gave him hardly any control over the film, and then Lucas was on set every day, setting up shots and directing actors and even doing second unit directing. Lucas was, essentially, a co-director, which is why ROTJ feels so much like a Lucas-film.

Does George even read his own stuff?
Time
That particular point was retarded from the beginning, because Obi Wan is the one who reveals to Luke that Leia is his sister. Obviously the line in ESB was not originally in reference to Leia, but with the elimination of the sequel trilogy in the early 80's, Lucas had to resolve it in ROTJ. So with regards to that point its precisely consistent with ROTJ IMO.

Looking for a Lucas interview

The footage seems more modern than the 80s, but it's available to download in small parts at TFN and babyhum is supposed to be releasing this as well.

Thank you very much! That was the one i was looking for.

And its a very good documentary BTW.

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM

Many people have suggested different ways of rendering the special edition discs unusable, throwing them away or sending them back to Lucas. For those of us in Region 1 who really want the official dvd of the originals but don't feel eager to "give in", I have an idea. Why not buy the release that already has the se disc made even worse. In other words, get the pan & scan version.
I'm actually considering this idea... not for the same reasons Knightmessenger posted (as I don't think my buying the fullscreen version of the film will register any kind of message to Lucasfilm at all), but for the simple reason that I'd rather not have two of the exact same things. I already own the 2004 version of the films on DVD in widescreen, so why not get something that's at least *slightly* different? At the very least I would have the pan & scan versions for curiosity value. Some of our forum members have even worked to preserve previous pan & scan editions of the trilogy just for posterity.

It's worth a thought. I haven't decided for sure yet which way I will go, but I'm glad the idea was brought up.

Very interesting! I just may do this!

Looking for a Lucas interview
Time
There was an interview with George Lucas and Francis Coppola, i belive in the 1980's, that i am looking for.
At one point an amusing exchange occurs:

Coppola: Now, the early Star Wars script you showed me, how was that different?
Lucas: Well, the twins were there and Vader was the father...
Coppola: Really? They were there--
Lucas: There were there [goes on to talk about other stuff]

Or something close to that. I have no idea where it is from or what the actual quote is but I've been dying to find out. Does anyone here know about this?

The Other side of the 30th Anniversary
Time
I think the 3d thing might be neat as a fun gimmick. 3D films are not what they used to be. The T2-3D is probably the best modern example, and it really is something to experience; this new 3-D-ization process is supposed to yield similar results. I for one think it will be cool . I'm sure once we see the trench run, walker battle or speeder chase in 3D we will admit that it is a fun concept.

Info: Any Godzilla fans out there?
Time
I love the original japanese films and i thought Devlin and Emerich did a good job with their 1998 remake. I never understood what the hell people had against it--HELLO, its Godzilla! Compared to the other films in the series it had the smartest plot, deepest-developed characters and the most thrilling action. I'm convinced that every critic of this film has never seen an actual Godzilla film.

You are welcome to your opinion, and I do sincerely hope that that line of reasoning is unique to you. I think i'll stick to the other preservation forum ...

I fail to see how "preserving" a star wars laserdisk is different than this.

Alternate Endings For The Trilogy....

In a complete rehash of the first movie.

Cut to Han and Lando sitting in a park on the forest moon of Endor.

Han comments on the sunset, and asks if Luke will ever return.

Now ending a promising franchise like that would really suck.

I actually liked Revolutions though!

Directing tips
Time
Directing a movie is fairly intuitive. Theres lots of books written about the subject but really directors just make up their technique as they go. Seeing as you wont be dealing with a real crew nor real actors i doubt any of the so-called "professional technique" would be of any use to you.

My advice: plan things. Make sure you know what kind of tone and quality you want the product to have, plan things so that people show up on time and you know what shots you have to get. And think realistically--you are not going to get crane shots of 500 extras. Other than that, everything else is your own creativity and talent. Good luck!

Something I don't get....

Okay, so like a lot of people I've heard about the new releases of the original trilogy, and that they're taken from the laserdisc versions. I have mixed feelings about it, but instead of boring people about it I'll just pose my question/observation:

In the press release for these, they noted that we would be able to see the original Star Wars before it became "Episode IV: A New Hope." Which is pretty cool, but what doesn't make sense is this: if these are essentially the laserdisc versions, why would it be that first version? I have bootlegs ripped from the laserdiscs, and even that says "A New Hope" at the beginning. Is there something I'm missing here?

The best answer is that they are simply editing the original crawl in. The original crawl can be seen in Empire of Dreams, so that means they must have it on video--i imagine they are just splicing it into the Laserdisk master.

(For the record, the new releases are not the Laserdisk transfers themselves but rather the same master tapes used to create the Laserdisks. Which means that they will presumably be a fair amount better than the Laserdisks, although still poor by todays standards)
