Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal
Time
Okay, this is something that has been eating my brain for a while now. Lucasfilm obviously is not interested in making any sort of new transfer of the OOT. Maybe this will change after September but i think probably not--it'll likely be another half decade or more before we get a new, high-resolution, anamorphic transfer of Star Wars in SD, let alone HD.

And we are all trying our best to wring the most out of what we have to work with. But the fact is, even massive undertaking that utilize the best possible technology, methods and efforts--i.e. the XO project--the fact remains that the best the OOT will ever look is a Laserdisk.

And we all know that there are many people out there with actual 35mm prints of Star Wars. In fact, if i understand it correctly, a member of the XO team himself even owns one. Now, the issue is "are these any good?"--are they scratchy and faded? Well, probably a lot of them are. But there are many that are not--in fact, i have seen some that are looking pretty damn good. Some people still have those rarer Technicolor prints made by dye-transfer that look almost immaculate in terms of colour and resolution.

So, what i am getting at is: how crazy is it for us to attempt to do our own high-resolution 2K scan of a 35mm print? This would literally preserve the film, more or less, forever. It would be so high-resolution that you could even make new 35mm prints from the data. Forget SD and HD, this is better than anything even available to consumers yet. This would place the future of the film in our hands, safe, secure, and for future releases, no longer bound to the Lucasfilm cash machine. The data could be used to make SD releases, HD releases and more and better 35mm prints. In short, we would never need Lucasfilm for the film ever again, ever. In time, people--for instance the same people that slaved over preserving the XO project--could frame-by-frame restore all the scratches and grain that would inevitably be resultant in a theatrical print. Star Wars would literally be ours for the ages.

Now, here is the problem: cost. Yes, you knew this would be coming. What is the price of scanning a 2 hour + 35mm at 2K resolution? Roughly $50,000 USD. I'm sure you could get a deal to scan it for a little less than this. Another problem: storage. I think this would literally take up a few terabytes of information, so basically it required a dedicated "Star Wars server." This is less of an issue however, as is the software to handle it--many people here and elsewhere are post-production professionals who not only would be willing to share and be caretakers of this data but also have the physical capability to do so. So that leaves the staggering cost of scanning the print.
At first this seems totally unrealistic...but really...is it?

How crazy is it to get a fundraiser going to make Star Wars truely--and physically--ours? If everyone here contributed a hundred bucks we'd have a good start, and many people including myself would be willing to donate many more times that amount. Take this over to Home Theater Forum, The Digital Bits, any place where collectors and professionals have been fighting the good fight--I'm betting that it would be surprising how fast the donation box would climb. And with people like Robert Harris ready to jump into the mix this could all be done properly and professionally.

Am I crazy? I think something like this would have a good chance at success, in time.

Star Wars in High Definition: OT clips from "Science of Star Wars" in HD
Time
Yes, Blu Ray's delays have certainly done some damage. But I still say Blu-Ray will win. This business about "the name HD-DVD subconsciously affecting consumer decision" is nice and logical but the thing is---average Joe Shmoe consumer wont be buying either of these formats. The people who will--and who will be deciding the early outcome of the format war--will be the home theater enthusiasts, who already know that Blu-Ray has better specs. The earliest titles are too primitive to accurately gauge, for both formats--in 2007 we'll see what either formats are actually capable of and it will be around here that we'll start seeing who will be the victor. The fact that Blu-Ray will be included with the PS3 is a huge advantage because now "average consumers" will own a high-def format player--which is the deciding factor in the format war victory. But like i said, no matter who wins, it will not be a mainstream format. I likely will never touch one of these things--i can't afford an HD TV set, and i don't see myself buying one within the next five years. By that time consumers will actually be switching to HD in the mainstream due to huge price drops and then another next-next-gen format will be coming out. When 2K resolution format comes out, then I'll start saving up.

Lucas may have caved, here is a link to Barnes & Noble early review of the O-OT DVD's:

Just because it is anamorphic--which i definitly do NOT believe is even true--it is irrelevant. It would still be based on a non-anamorphic telecine, and more importantly, a non-anamorphic telecine MADE FOR LASERDISK IN 1993. So big woop. Unless they got a 35mm print and scanned a new transfer nothing has changed.

Info Wanted: What is the preservation project closest to the original 1977 release?
Time
Well i know the mono version was being mixed on the opening day, May 25th, since Lucas tells the story of how he went to go to the MGM mixing studio to work on the mix and noticed the lines around the block and then phoned up Hamill to come down and loop more dialog that very night. I would assume that the foreign mixes would be done after this. IMDB lists opening days for overseas as much, much later in the summer, October, November and December for many european countries (although this could easily be inaccurate, i would think not by a whole lot).

I suppose that would be kind of neat. That might be the closest to an "original language" presentation as you could get--english, italian and spanish. Of course it might even be switching within the scene, which would be either neat or annoying. But even then, its still a post-production dub--someone should make a "Production Audio" release of the films with all of the voices removed!

It seems like most of these projects are using other foreign dubs besides the "original" Italian.

Actually, every version is dubbed. The trend at the time was to not record sound in order to save time and all the actors would be re-recorded later. Which is why Clint Eastwood is very clearly speaking english, even though the sync is slightly off much of the time. So really, there is no "original language."

Info Wanted: What is the best Edit of Superman?
Time
I like the SE on DVD by far the best. The only regrettable thing is, as mentioned the Lois Lane poem, but its not all that bad and its brief. But other than that all the additions are fabulous--you get some great extra development on Clarke's home life on the farm that rounds out the characters much more and some great scenes later on including a terrific one of Superman fighting Lex Luthor's machine gun room. I find the extra extended editions that include every deleted scene to become boring but the Special Edition is rightly balanced IMO.

I hate M. Night Ramalamadingdong!
Time
Yes, M. Night Shamylan is talented and has made some decent films....but what the fuck is this? He has a company giving him $60 million, full control and telling him to go off and make whatever he wants with it--and he rejects it?! Because they are not worshipping the ground he walks on??! Fuck that! I had respect for this man, but now that is lost. So the executives don't believe in you 100%--welcome to the real world! The real world where major studios don't give you a dumptruck of cash, full creative control and a hundred million dollar marketing campaign. And he is STILL getting that! They believe in him enough to still give him $60 million! What the fuck does he want? That makes him cry? Are you kidding me? This is the most self-serving crap that has ever been written. People thought Francis Coppola was a megalowmaniac but was never half this wimpy--he wouldnt care whether the studio suported him and if they didnt give him the money then he just paid for it himself, as in when he made Apocalypse Now and mortgaged his house for it.

This is the most digusting, ball-less, self-serving, cry-baby-ish display i have ever seen from a director. Sorry buddy, when you are a commerical director you have to take it from the studios and bless every act of creative control you get because it is a gift from them. Dont' like it? Talk to Ridley Scott. The man can't even count the number of films of his that have been cancelled or re-cut but he never wrote a book blasting a studio and never broke down and cried because the studio gave him $60 million but didn't kiss his ass as well. Jesus christ.

It is but the grammar is still very wrong. Should clean this up.

Other than that this is by far the most extensive Episode I edit I've come across, and by far the most interesting with all of that re-structuring done. Nice work.

Curious--are the Neimoidians re-dubbed or as they were in the original cut? And for the love of god cut down the podrace, the dvd version goes on far too long (and you can tell what footage is new because it is very inferior to the original).

"Troy" Re-Cut (Released)

I can only hope you are joking When was the last time Hollywood actually made a historically accurate movie anyway?

The writer of Kingdom of Heaven self-proclaimed the magnificent directors cut to be the most historically accurate movie ever made. I think i might agree with him.

As for Gabriel Yard's rejected score, I haven't come across it and surprisingly James Horner's rather cartoonish score now works better than ever, though I am still trying to tone down the synthesizers in a few spots; do synthesizers ever work in period films?? If anyone knows where to find Yard's score though i would love to hear it, as it is supposedly his best work.

I've cut out a few more bits, notably Hector's funeral, which i felt was not necessary after watching a rough cut. And i have to say, i was surprisingly moved by certain parts of the film, much more than the original cut and even when i am attempting to downplay all the other characters--just goes to show you what the elimination of boring exposition and lame dialog will do for you.

As for Sean Bean--i didn't even notice him in the original cut except for one or two scenes but now with my new cut he becomes elevated to a secondary character.

After viewing my first pass i did notice one thing that may be hard to overcome--Achilles dissapears from the story at two key points, the first being between his recruitment in Greece and appearance on the shores of Troy and the second and most major one being the attempted seige of Troy, where the film completely leaves him behind for almost twenty minutes. I have included him as a spectator but the drama is really on Paris and Hector and it really is the best scene in the entire film and a major plot point--i could trim it back to just the necessary exposition required but i fear that it might rob the scene of all its drama and hence not serve any purpose. I may experiment with this a bit. As it stands the scene is a few minutes shorter but it is a bit odd that just as Achilles becomes the focus he dissapears for fifteen minutes.

"Troy" Re-Cut (Released)
Time

Well I am in the in the latter stages of my first fan-edit.

Let me say this right now: Troy sucked. Big time. The acting was wooden, the script a horrible, clichéd mess that was only mildly faithful to the superior source material, the photography was boring, the production design incredibly amateurish, the score worthless (synthesizers??!), the characters unlikeable and it just went on and on. Only the sometimes-impressive visual effects and the magnetic screen-presence of Brad Pitt saved the film from utter ruin. In my opinion of course.

But underneath all of that trash, I could see that there was a movie salvageable. Not a great one, but a watchable one at least, something people could enjoy.

What was the problem? Two things. One, the film was attempting to be a moving, tragic historical epic 50% of the time. It is far too cliched, boring and poorly directed to be such a thing. Two, the film was attempting to be an action-packed comic-book like adventure film the other 50% of the time, with epic scenery, larger-than-life heroes and an enjoyably cheesy ambiance. This works for the most part, but the first 50% offsets this second half and both fall apart.

Well, I have salvaged that second aspect into its own movie. This is not a moving and emotional historical epic like Gladiator or Kingdom of Heaven—it’s a comic book adventure film in the vein of Ray Harryhausen. Think Jason and the Argonauts, 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Clash of the Titans.
This is my version of the movie formerly known as Troy. I have yet to give it a new name—suggestions are welcome. I was thinking of merely Achilles to reflect the change in story focus from the whole Trojan war to just Achilles but that strikes me as a somewhat dull title.

Challenges:
-Achilles is presented as an Dirty Harry-like anti-hero; well, the rogue aspect of him works, but he comes off as a murderous, bloodthirsty sociopath in the film.
The original cut has no protagonist; the film is split between Achilles (Brad Pitt), Hector (Eric Bana) and Paris (Orlando Bloom). Achilles’ story is the most interesting one but his character is very uneven; Hector is interesting to a degree but we never really get a feel for him and he dies halfway; Paris is just annoying and the whole “doomed romance” plot totally fails and drags the movie down with it. This begs the question: who’s story is this? In trying to answer it with “everybody’s story” the filmmakers inevitably gave us “nobody’s story.”
-Bad pacing. There’s too many pointless battle shots of random soldiers fighting, the film seems to stop a million times for funerals, the overuse of a the “tragic” wailing first made trendy by Gladiator is very annoying and theres far too many scenes where characters sit and provide exposition and talk irrelevant politics. And it goes on far too long.

Well, I’ve solved those problems, for the most part. Achilles is now the clear protagonist of the film, a rogue-ish hero with a bad streak of attitude in him but generally likeable. Paris and Hector are there as adversaries for him but they are developed to a degree as people with their own issues; Hector and King Priam come across as more devious and antagonistic now, and Paris much more sneaky, though I think the audience identifies with his struggle more now that all the crappy dialog is cut down.

Complete list of changes:

I am still working on little tweaks and cuts. There probably a few things i forgot to mention too.

Final running time: 2 hours, 20 minutes.
original run time: 2 hours, 42 minutes.

The final product is a fast-paced, comic-book-like adventure epic which follows Achilles, the greatest hero who ever lived, as he battles the greedy and nasty King Agamemnon, wrestles with the morality of war, battles the Trojans and romances Briseis. It is very watchable but still imperfect due to the actual source—nevertheless, this is all the good that lay in the film known as Troy.

Should have this done by wednesday or so. Anyone interested?
