Very nice, though I would hate to lose the original music. Remember, though, that the filmmakers were careful NOT to do any foley for his footsteps. šŸ˜‰

Oh crap, I never even noticed that! Very clever!

And yes, the original music is also great. I just canā€™t get enough of The Jedi Steps, though. Just something fun to try.

One thing Iā€™ve really wanted to do is see the inclusion of the song ā€œThe Jedi Stepsā€ (from The Force Awakens) overlayed with the climatic moment of Luke walking out to confront Kylo Ren and the First Order.

Updated the video with foley and greatly improved the syncing of the score to the video. I changed the key of The Jedi Steps into A flat and upped the tempo just slightly to match the last note of the score when Luke kisses Leia on the forehead. This way, it sounds much smoother from one theme into the next.

One thing Iā€™ve really wanted to do is see the inclusion of the song ā€œThe Jedi Stepsā€ (from The Force Awakens) overlayed with the climatic moment of Luke walking out to confront Kylo Ren and the First Order.

Donā€™t get me wrong: the existing theme during that scene (ā€œThe Sparkā€) is great. But ā€œThe Jedi Stepsā€ gives me chills ā€” itā€™s the song that introduces us to Luke Skywalker for the first time in the sequel trilogy. Luke the legend, Luke the Jedi Master, Luke returns. Thatā€™s why I feel ā€œThe Jedi Stepsā€ is so appropriate during the showdown on Crait.

I changed the key of the music so that it better matched the existing music, and added the sound effects.

EDIT: Updated the video and changed several things to make the sequence much better.

Iā€™m also baffled as to why it didnā€™t cut things likeā€¦the Chewie eating a porg.

Because some people like that part?

Itā€™s not exactly Jar Jar stepping in shit.

My ideal version would cut the final porg with the sad eyes but leave the part with the other 3.

I agree. A little humor in Star Wars is fine! But they tend to jump the shark more often than not, so I say keep the first part the porg eating scene, but lose the sad eyes.

Likewise, with Poe and Huxā€™s conversation at the beginning of the film, Iā€™m fine with the ā€œcan he hear me banter,ā€ it just needs to be shortened and lose the ā€œyour momā€ joke.

I am hoping to either re-purpose Finnā€™s last speeder run into him crashing right before he reaches the cannon or just getting rid of it all together. Iā€™ll put up a concept clip soon so people can get the idea. Basically he would be closing in on it, then just as he got close, you see the speeder shake, his stabilizer stick thingy come off the ground, the ship turns wayside and then he crashes. Iā€™d have to rescore it as well.

Could it be that Finnā€™s speeder gets shot? Like as in he is planning on sacrificing himself only to have one of the First Order walkers shoot him before he has the opportunity. Might be more realistic than just him crashing.

This is a nice idea but Iā€™m not sure how it could be executed.

Hmm. I would need to watch the scene again. Iā€™m wondering if you could reuse a shot of the walkers firing combined with one of the shots of the other speeders getting hit. Thereā€™s plenty of examples in that sequence of the speeders getting picked off. Wondering if you could cut part of it in time it with Rose hitting Finnā€™s speeder.

I present the first rescored scene in the edit. This is the scene of Kylo pleading for Rey to join him. The track I chose to rescore the scene with is the second half of ā€œAnakinā€™s Dark Deedsā€ (non-orchestral section) from the episode three soundtrack.

I love the emotion that it adds and I feel it fits perfectly. Tell me what you all think!

https://vimeo.com/260874004

I usually do NOT like rescores for a number of reasons ā€”Ā namly because fanedits try to place more emphasis on the new music than the existining content ā€” but this actually fits pretty well. My main takeaways:

  • Itā€™s too loud. The dialog needs to be the forefront.
  • Itā€™s too long. The big crescendo at the end needs to come before Hux starts talking. Youā€™re going to have to cut the song somewhere in the middle and piece it together, I think.

So, Iā€™m watching ā€œThe Fallen Knightā€ right now (the first fanedit of The Last Jedi). As I watch it, Iā€™m just going to edit this post with my thoughts. I will tell you that, at least initially, while I value what the creator was going for with this project, I can absolutely say that this is clearly rushed in an effort to hold the title of being the first TLJ fanedit. Itā€™ll get some traction, but I really hope we get some high quality edits out of this film.

Okay, here are my thoughts on what was good or bad. (Updated in real time.)

The ENTIRE exchange between Poe and Hux has been cut from the beginning of the film.

I think this was a bad decision. I think cutting SOME of the conversation would have been good, but not all of it. Keep the ā€œHello, holding for Hux,ā€ etc. at least for the first line of their exchange, but cut out the ā€œtall, pasty guyā€ remark Poe says. And of course, cut out the ā€œyour momā€ joke. But cutting the whole exchange makes it very obvious there has been a cut, especially because Hux out of nowhere screams, ā€œOPEN FIRE!ā€ when itā€™s just one X-Wing fighter that he suddenly wants to blast out of the sky, when he seemed amused by it just moments earlier.

When BB-8 fixes Poeā€™s X-Wing by jamming his whole head into the instrumentation panel

I would have taken this out. I think it was pretty silly.

When Paige Tico (the Resistance bomber pilot) kicks the ladder to make the bomb remote fall

First of all, I thought this scene took WAY too long. I kept yelling at my TV, ā€œJUST CLIMB UP THE LADDER AND PRESS THE BUTTON!ā€ It took like 45 seconds. If I were editing this, I would have given it like two kicks, and then the remote falls. Maybe, while it is falling, interject the shot of it falling with the other battle scenes that are shown during this sequence. Also, the end where she catches the remote as it is falling I thought was a little too clichĆ©, even for Star Wars.

Luke drops the lightsaber instead of tossing it over his shoulder

Much better. Itā€™s a little short (looks like the editor just cut the shot just before he tosses it). I wish we could have a shot of it at his feet or something. Maybe if someone feels like getting into costume?

The inclusion of the ā€œLuke Mournsā€ deleted scene

I think this was really good to have. Shows that Luke isnā€™t entirely heartless like he comes across as for so much of this film.

Deleted the space cow boobs and giant fish scene

This was probably for the best. But now, when Rey and Luke talk at the ancient tree, she says to him, ā€œWhy canā€™t you teach me? Iā€™ve seen your daily routine. Youā€™re not busy.ā€ Well, now she hasnā€™t seen his daily routine. So either that line needs to be cut or cow boobs needs to stay.

Adding the deleted scene where Poe catches up Finn and gives him his jacket (ā€œnot much of a sewerā€).

GREAT addition, in my opinion. Adds so much more to Finnā€™s character. Should have been in the final film.

Cutting the Resistance cruiser explosion / Leia floating though space

Iā€™m really glad that the Leia floating through space scene was cutā€¦ but the editor also cut the bridge explosion entirely. Soā€¦ Iā€™m wondering how theyā€™re going to explain Leiaā€™s injury / absence from the rest of the film. UPDATE: Iā€™m realizing that the editor cut out all of the scenes involving the Resistance after this point. The movie just becomes a big Rey / Luke training sequenceā€¦ honestly, Iā€™m kinda digging it. Maybe a single cut back to Resistance would be good, I donā€™t know.

Chewie eating the porg as the porgs watch

I would have been fine with keeping the first shot and him growling (hey a little humor in Star Wars is good), but the close up / ā€œsad eyesā€ of the porg is just too over-the-top for me.

The first Force / mind meld with Rey and Kylo has been shortened

Why? This didnā€™t make any sense to me. It was so abrupt. Luke just says, ā€œLetā€™s get started,ā€ and then we see Rey walking away. No indication if Kylo is following them or why she didnā€™t say anything about it. Easily the sloppiest part of this edit so far. The editor also gets rid of the natives on the island ā€” I think I may agree with that. I kind of like the island being completely secluded.

Cutting the ā€œreach outā€ / tickling with the leaf moment

I never really had a problem with this scene. I know some people are very anti-humor in Star Wars, but I almost think this scene should have stayed. I mean, heā€™s talking about reaching out with the Force and making rocks float, itā€™s taking itself way too seriously. A little moment of slapstick is fine because itā€™s not overdone. Reminds me of Yoda in ESB. I would have kept it.

During that same Luke / Rey training scene (when she first sees the cave in her mind)

Almost wondering if it would be worth playing a subtle version of the Imperial March here. Or whatever music played in ESB when Luke went to the cave. Maybe not.

The Cave sequence

Iā€™ve never fully understood this sequence, and maybe something could be improved here, I donā€™t know. Maybe better to leave it alone.

Yoda could use some color correction

Yoda is way too saturated as a force ghost. Not in all the shots with him, but many of them, particularly at first.

For the first time since the Leia floating in space scene was cut, weā€™re catching up with the Resistance. Leia never got injured and the Canto Bight sequence never happened.

At this point in the movie, weā€™ve been watching Rey almost the entire time. Itā€™s been almost 30 minutes and we havenā€™t checked in with the Resistance or Poe or Finn. While at first I didnā€™t mind the longer sequences spent with Rey and Luke, it became TOO long and I found myself wondering, ā€œWhat happened since last we saw the rest of the characters?ā€

Turns out we donā€™t see them again until Rey leaves the island. The next scene is Leia telling Holdo to get on the transport to escape. As soon as Holdo came on, I was like, ā€œWho is this chick?ā€ This is seriously our first introduction to her? I think way too much got cut here. Also just some bad editing here, obvious music cuts.

I think Canto Bight has to stay. At least some of it. I have some ideas for what could happen here in my own edit, but Iā€™ll leave those comments elsewhere.

We donā€™t see Poe again until after the Resistance is on the shuttles escaping the crusier

This is way too long. We havenā€™t seen him since the beginning of the space chase. No idea where Finn is during this time. Just everything after this part doesnā€™t make sense. Suddenly the First Order is attacking the Resistance because, in the actual film, Finn and friends gave away the Resistanceā€™s plan.

Throne room sequence

Only thing I would have changed here would have been shortening the sequence where Kylo Ren spins the lightsaber toward Snoke. I like keeping Snokeā€™s death a little more of a surprise and I donā€™t want to just give it away whatā€™s about to happen.

We see Finn for the first time since the beginning of the film after theyā€™ve landed on Crait. This is also the first time we see Rose.

Again, this just seems like way too long. Weā€™ve gone almost the entire movie without seeing Finn. It also makes Roseā€™s sisters sacrifice mean nothing, the amulet around her neck, etc.

Total cut of the Finn sacrifice scene and Rose kiss

Iā€™m glad the Rose kiss is gone, but I kinda wish Finnā€™s (attempted) sacrifice stayed. I think itā€™s a huge part of his character arc from The Force Awakens

Kylo Ren / Luke Skywalker battle

How difficult would it be to make Luke hold his green saber instead of his blue? Or is the blue saber more symbolic?

Long story shortā€¦ I think this was a good first fanedit for The Last Jedi. There were some things I really liked, such as the extended time spent with Rey / Luke training (although it was too long and we didnā€™t check in with our other heroes even once during that period).

I donā€™t think Canto Bight can be cut completely. It needs to stay, or at least some of it needs to. That was the biggest change with this film. But doing it completely, took away from the rest of the characters and it was just too much.

Overall, I enjoyed it, but I donā€™t doubt others will have more creative implementations of their own fanedits.

It bugs me how many people want to strip all humor out of Star Wars.

Yes, The Last Jedi had some attempts at humor that went too far. But instead of completely taking out those lines, perhaps just trim them a little. For example, the infamous ā€œyour momā€ joke that Poe makes was too much in my opinion, but I was okay with him joking for a moment saying that he was on hold for Hux. Cut it there.

I didnā€™t mind ā€œbig ass doorā€ or Luke winking. I will say that I thought his brushing off the shoulder wasnā€™t really appropriate, but again ā€”Ā donā€™t take out all humor. Give us a good balance.

Re-reading all of these posts, some of you people are WAY too nitpicky. Like with the humor ā€” you DONā€™T need to cut all of it. Maybe just trim it a little.

The opening dialogue between Hux and Poe was too drawn out, but if it were just one line, itā€™d still be humorous and fun, without being silly. The same with Chewie eating the Porgs ā€” keep the first part of that scene, but cut out the ā€œsad eyes.ā€

And so onā€¦ a little humor is fine in Star Wars, people.

After my second viewing of the movie, Iā€™ve learned to enjoy it a little more than what I did on my initial watch. That said, there are definitely areas that could benefit from fanediting.

While I wonā€™t go into all the details at this moment (early Christmas celebration with family about to begin), one specific item that I think would have been ideal would have been for ā€œThe Jedi Stepsā€ to have played when Luke walked out to confront Kylo. So that it starts small and quiet during his brief chat with Leia, and then crescendos into a powerful and loud theme from The Jedi Steps as he walks out the door.

Just a thought.

Edit out Admiral Ackbarā€™s death. Then have him stay behind on the rebel cruiser and hyperspace into the enemy fleet.

That way heā€™ll go out taking yet another command ship with him, completing the circle (so to speak) and getting the noble death such a revered character deserves.

I would say do this with Leia instead. If thatā€™s even possible to somehow edit (not likely).

As I watched the film for the very first time in theaters, I was thinking to myself, ā€œI want to cut this in my fanedit.ā€ So many poor choices with the script, I just have trouble comprehending why they made some of the decisions they did.

  • Donā€™t get me wrong, itā€™s okay to have humor in Star Wars. I thought the humor in The Force Awakens was perfect, and I actually do not like fan edits that try to strip it all out. But the lame jokes in The Last Jedi were way over the top.

  • We need to find some way to kill Leia on-screen. I donā€™t want to sound like an asshole, but we know that since Carrie Fisher passed away, theyā€™ve already said she wonā€™t be CGIā€™d into Episode IX. There were opportunities in this film to have her character pass away in line with her qualities as a Resistance leader. She could have died in the explosion, or in recovery, or she could have even been the one to go kamikaze in the end and save the Resistance in the process. No idea how to handle this one.

  • And numerous other things.

I wish they wouldnā€™t have made so many poor choices with this film, because much of what they did can not be fixed in fanediting. And for that matter, much of it cannot be fixed for Episode IX.

And Iā€™ve identified the shots needing new slow motion from the crying Rey/Falcon escape.

So, while youā€™re looking at retiming, thereā€™s a certain shot that is in the theatrical release that is clearly in slow motion and it bugs me every time I see it.

rey

Itā€™s at 1:57:20 in Restructured V2. The shot of Rey standing over Kylo when she beats him. Look at the falling snow and itā€™s clearly in slow mo. There isnā€™t a way to retime that, is there? It stands out to me every time and bugs the crap out of me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=736lH16Szns&feature=youtu.be

It does nothing to the story, it destroys pace, it gives us deus ex machinaā€™s, it gets Chewie shot within his first five minutes back into the movie, we are introduced to two silly gangs that serve nothing to the story or the characters and the CGI for the rathars is not particularly good or interesting.

Just watched it and its going to create some problems if you cut the complete Rathtar sequence. For one, why would Rey be copilot when Chewie is perfectly healthy? There is no way Chewie would just lie back, on the bunk, while Han is trying to escape. Then later why does Chewie suddenly have a bandage on his arm if he wasnā€™t injured? You also have Finn following Han with rey and then he is suddenly back in the hold area. Why did he just suddenly stop running along with Rey and Han when he is obviously after some answers? (you can also see that they run right past the cockpit). Itā€™s a very harsh jump cut that doesnā€™t work iā€™m afraid.

I agree 100%. Donā€™t get me wrong, I donā€™t love the Rathar sequence, but it has too many important elements necessary for the story.

The ONLY change I would make to the sequence is to shorten the amount of time that Finn is being dragged away by the Rathar. I always thought that was a little far fetched because all the other dudes were eaten almost immediately.

As we look to Ridley retiming additional shots that had to be slowed down using his technological alchemy, we should take a look at the Starkiller explosion scene. Any shots between, ā€œIt is time to complete his trainingā€ and the shot of the Falcon and X-wings where they formerly jumped to lightspeed are potentially slowed down very slightly. NeverarGreat carefully matched the necessary length of the music track.

Personally, I would prefer having the shots be slowed over not having them at all. Seeing the pilotsā€™ reactions to Starkiller base firing, seeing the people in the Resistance control room, etc. is all critical to the emotion in the scene. For the last part, when the Falcon flies away, I had no issue with that whatsoever. I would rather have the slowness than not have the scenes.

Well, the light coming on is at least connecting Threepioā€™s weird line to the actual thing that happens at the end. Thatā€™s the idea anyway, an elegant, simple solution that does not involve much modification of the original film.

Obviously, the whole plot point is pretty weak. But I think this is a good workaround.

Iā€™m real proud of the final product, and really will be once we get it produced. šŸ˜‰

Itā€™s great work! You should be very proud!

Let us know what your family thinks of it.

Just wondering if anyone else has tried burning it to Blu-ray yet. Iā€™ve experienced some technical hurdles trying to share it with my family, so we just watched the MKV via connecting my computer to the TV. Trying to burn it has been a nightmareā€¦ ended up buying Toast Titanium Pro just for the capability, but it ended up with all sorts of framerate issues. Iā€™m going to convert it via Handbrake to an MP4 and burn that, but I was really hoping that I wouldnā€™t have to do that because I donā€™t want to affect the image quality.

My only quirks with it that I felt could use a couple changesā€¦

Some of the dialogue is a little quiet with the new music additions. Specifically, I only found two places this was the case:

  1. When Han says, ā€œWhereā€™d you get that?ā€ in Mazā€™s castle when she hands out the lightsaber.
  2. In the new Snoke scene after Hanā€™s death when he says, ā€œPrepare the weapon.ā€

Maybe just duck the music down slightly? Other than that, I think this seemed great.
