STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

Also, not sure if Ady has answered this, but is the Imperial March being kept in the Death Star reveal, given the full march treatment of the Death Star theme in Rogue One?

I am wondering this myself. I almost feel as though “The Imperial March” should NOT be in A New Hope, perhaps with the only exception being when Vader is on the screen — the theme has been closely tied with Vader and his leadership of the fleet.

However, after Rogue One, they chose to embrace the classic Death Star 1 theme (dun, dun dun dun!) and also introduced “The Imperial Suite,” which almost seems more like an appropriate theme for the Empire in the time of Tarkin.

I would personally like to see The Imperial Suite in ANH:R HD, and keep The Imperial March out of it (with the exception, perhaps, being when Vader makes a move — maybe the lightsaber battle with Obi-Wan or when Vader hops into his TIE fighter).

By the way, here’s the theme I’m referring to (“The Imperial Suite”):

Perhaps competent isn’t the right word. What bugs me about her character is that she comes out of nowhere, we’re suddenly supposed to just go along with her plan (which the audience doesn’t know about), and then in the end, she saves the day?

I don’t think we’re supposed to go along with her, I think we’re supposed to be suspicious of her like Poe is. Then we’re surprised (like Poe) when she actually has a plan and saves the day.

You’re right — I see what Rian Johnson was going for. With that said, I don’t like it. I get it, but it doesn’t sit well with me at all because in the end, she is suddenly embraced by Leia as a friend. It’s as if we’re suddenly supposed to be okay with this stranger making these great sacrifices, despite her abrasive attitude.

One explanation that I thought while watching it was that she couldn’t trust anyone after being tracked through hyperspace. It reminded me of Battlestar Galactica, when they kept getting followed through light speed because someone planted a tracking device on their ship. If Holdo is suspicious of a traitor, she might keep her plans more secret. However, this is not really addressed in the film, so it comes off as a plot contrivance.

I have the same head canon — yes, she couldn’t trust anyone. Unlike Battlestar Galactica, however, they didn’t say this in The Last Jedi. The thing I like about this guy putting Ackbar back into the film is that it explains that they’re not discussing the plan for that very reason. That makes Holdo’s abrasive attitude make so much more sense and actually allows the audience to feel more appreciative for her sacrifice.

Just my two cents, anyway.

My thoughts are that Holdo was more than competent in the theatrical version of TLJ.

Having Ackbar vouch for her is something that make it feel more complete, in my opinion.

If you haven’t seen this already, take a look. This guy over on Reddit posted this and it looks pretty fantastic.

Here’s a direct link to the video:

Would love to see this integrated into some fan edits, and makes it really come together to make sense of why Holdo doesn’t tell anyone her plan. Thoughts?

STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **
Time

Sooooo.

Awhile back I created my own fanedit of ROTJ (it’s called “The Ziggy Edit,” if you can find it out there).

One of my changes included the removal of Obi-Wan’s awful line: “What I told you was true, from a certain point of view.”

Instead, I inserted a clip from some of the original deleted scenes / lines from a laserdisc. It’s the scene on Yoda’s deathbed, and when Luke asks Yoda about his father, Yoda responds as he does in the final film, but also says, “Obi-Wan would have told you had I let him, but not ready for the burden were you.”

Such a better explanation than Lucas’s desire to make Obi-Wan into a saint.

EDIT: found an article about the scene here: https://www.tor.com/2013/11/07/absolving-obi-wan-deleted-scene-from-return-of-the-jedi-makes-yoda-into-the-jerk/

EDIT 2: found the footage (30 mins!): https://youtube.com/watch?v=Kz56q4t6fek

With my V2 of my TLJ:L project and TFA:R V3 being nearly ready to go, I would like to turn my attention to this project, starting with ANH.

I’m just going to be honest: I feel like it would be best to wait for Adywan as the improvements in video quality alone are substantial. ANH will be released in HD eventually by him. Maybe work on ESB first?

Idea: Has anyone attempted to put Holdo in The Force Awakens so that her character doesn't feel shoehorned into The Last Jedi?
Time

Just wondering if there are any fan edits that have tried putting Holdo into The Force Awakens?

I know I’m not alone in thinking that her character felt very forced (no pun intended) and came out of nowhere. Like, “Who is person?” and “Why do we care about her?” and “Why haven’t we heard of her before if she and Leia are such good friends?”

So anyway, I’m wondering if anyone has looked at creating a fan edit that integrates Holdo into The Force Awakens to bridge the gap and makes her role in The Last Jedi feel more authentic?

Huh, I didn’t notice that…maybe an audio holdover from Hal’s cut of the scene? I know poppasketti restored a line or two toward the end of the exchange compared to Hal’s cut, but I don’t know if he ever said if he used Hal’s audio mix there or if he went back to the BR audio.

Yeah, it’s definitely there. Watch the cut put together for the preview he posted on Vimeo:

And then watch the scene in the final version at starting about 3 min 50 sec. There’s a video clip missing, but the audio is still there. The video clip needs to be reinserted.

Hey man, just watched the film and I want to say great work! This really addresses most of my annoyances regarding the The Last Jedi. Thank you putting together such a fine project.

I have found two quirks that I wanted to mention.

The first:

At the beginning of the movie, during the funny exchange between Hux and Poe, is there a video clip missing at 3:58? Hux says, “You and your friends are doomed. We’ll wipe your filth from the galaxy.” In Hal9000’s version, there is a shot of the “loading” bar in Poe’s cockpit and we hear Hux’s voice over the radio briefly. This is also visible in the Vimeo clip you uploaded.

But now, that shot is gone, and yet, the audio remains. We can still hear the sound effect of Poe’s “loading” bar over Hux’s talking. Is the video clip supposed to be re-inserted there? Or did you intentionally take it out? (Personally, I’d keep the shot in, as I believe it gives context as to what is happening in this scene, but obviously, now it’s not there.)

And the second:

Finn & Rose escaping the Star Destroyer feels rather rushed. It’s just a little too fast and seems obvious that something was cut here. I’m not sure how to fix that exactly, but it’s just something I felt that needed mentioning.

Have you noticed hal, as an editor, in more recent movies are deleted scenes added to the Bluray in their unfinished versions rather than becoming fodder for editors

Just my take: but fanediting is such a niche hobby that few people know it exists. I don’t believe studios aren’t sharing their deleted scenes because of fanedits, but rather just because of a lack of interest among casual moviegoers. They probably see it as more work to put together, and some of the clips are often unfinished or may have issues or mistakes the studio or director doesn’t want to share publicly, so they’re just choosing not to do it anymore.

I know I’m a few days late here, but this is a fantastic idea, poppasketti. Really stoked to see Hal implementing it in his version.

I seriously had goosebumps when that music started playing. What a great addition and wonderful change to that scene.

Hal 9000 said:

Is it really worthwhile if it only removes one kick? I can’t do any editing this morning, but I can give it another look with that in mind.

Also, I’m all for fewer kicks. Even if it’s just one. That scene drags on for way too long and it treats the audience as if we’re stupid.

I just wanted to throw this out there to see what people think.

The “cave” scene was weird. I didn’t understand why there were a million Rey’s all lined up. I’m probably missing something. So I edited that out (albeit, quite poorly) and made a version where she simply walks up to the mirror and asks it her question.

Thoughts?

I just want to bring up one more scene that really bugs me: it’s when Rose’s sister (Paige) starts kicking the ladder to get the damn remote to drop the bombs. It bugs me so much because I’m just screaming at my TV, “JUST CLIMB BACK UP THE FREAKING LADDER!” It’s so long and drawn out, and it just bugs me.

I like this! I’ll try it myself, and will likely go with it. Though, I’ll keep the remote flying past her initially.

I’d really like to see your take on it. That whole sequence seems to be building up tension for no reason at all, and her repeated kicking of the ladder just makes it silly. Shorting that sequence would help significantly. (The remote flying past her I can deal with.)

Thank you for this. I actually found I had much more of an emotional reaction to this scene using this score, rather than the other. It’s a little softer and more intimate, while the original was rather loud and melodramatic. I actually just showed a friend of mine this version, and her reaction was, “Oh no, I feel so sad for Luke.”

Watching Luke in such a private and mournful moment is something that shouldn’t be exaggerated with a loud score, but rather, it should be quiet, almost as though we there with him. This new music selection feels much more appropriate.

Only issue I have is right at the very beginning when the music starts playing. It sounds like it’s fading in too much. Can you either shorten the time of the fade in or have it start when it hits the next note?

I do genuinely like that Luke throws the saber, echoing ROTJ’s saber toss in a meaningful way. I just don’t like the comic manner in which it was executed. I love the ‘alternate take’ seen in the bonus material, it’s just too bad we don’t have it framed in such a way as could actually be used seamlessly.

You’re right: the ‘alternate take’ of Luke throwing the lightsaber wouldn’t be seamless. But I honestly think it’s better to have it done in two shots than the one shot which appears comical. This remains the best version of it I’ve seen — better than dropping it, in my opinion. If you don’t do it, that’s fine, I’ll get over it, but I still won’t like it! Oh well.

Hal 9000 said:

One idea for sneaking in an honest “I have a bad feeling about this” would be to slip one in by 3PO (from offscreen) right before Leia tells him to wipe a nervous expression off his face, sourced from one of many times I’m sure Anthony Daniels has recorded the line in spinoff material. However, this would likely feel shoehorned in and undercut the existing nice joke.

This is actually an interesting idea, but one that I don’t really feel is necessary.

It bugs me enough that I re-edited it and removed a couple of her kicks, so now it falls on the third kick. Also, I removed the part where the remote flies past her. Any thoughts here?

What do you all think about potentially reinstating two things?

The leaf/reed scene - Luke is sardonic, and it fits in with his character, makes the point the scene is going for that Rey doesn’t know the first thing about the Force, and is a genuinely funny moment. With the surrounding caretaker humor gone, maybe this one is worth keeping.

I’d be fine with keeping it.

“…not about fighting what we hate, saving what we love.” - This line sucks, but perhaps it’s worth it to cap off the Finn and Rose plot’s point. It harkens back to the opening act, and shows her (dumb) growth throughout the movie. I do not like the line. But… eh?

For the love of the Force, no. People literally laughed out loud in the theater when she said that line.

Last time I watched TLJ I had the thought of just removing Poe’s x wing getting damaged in the first place therefore no bb8 fixing it? I mean it never comes up again. Just have him run through and take out the guns, then it’s all about the bombers like in the theatrical.

That seems so simple I don’t know why it hasn’t been discussed already. Just cut out Poe’s X-Wing getting damaged and there’s no need for BB-8 to have to fix anything.

Okay, just finished watching your workprint, version 1.0.

I fully admit that some of this is just me thinking out loud. Some of these are things specific to your fanedit, and others are just points about the film that I wish were changed. You may agree or disagree with some of my comments, but these are just my gut feelings on what I just watched. I hope this helps.

  • The Poe & Hux "telephone call"
    • MUCH better — your edit retains the humor without making it over the top
    • Absolutely my favorite rendition of this scene that I’ve watched so far
    • I wouldn’t touch this any more: it’s perfect in this form
  • BB-8 fixing Poe’s X-Wing
    • Full disclosure: I’ve never been a fan of this sequence
    • Having BB-8 stick his whole head into the panel seems silly
    • I really have no idea if there’s a way to improve this, so I might just have to get over it
  • Paige Tico (bomber pilot) sequence
    • After she climbs the ladder to grab the remote, she falls
    • She keeps kicking the ladder again and again to get the remote to fall, but I think this goes on for way too long
    • I find myself screaming at my TV, “Just get up and go get it! You could have gotten it by now!”
    • I understand that maybe she’s injured, but we never see that, so it just looks like she’s lazy
    • I would recommend cutting it so that the remote falls on perhaps her third kick of the ladder
    • Also, I would cut the shot of the remote flying past her (keep the slow motion and her catching it, but the shot where she just watches it fly past her head is annoying).
  • Luke lightsaber toss
    • Still not sold on Luke tossing the lightsaber over his shoulder
    • Other people’s edits have Luke simply dropping the lightsaber, which is a good alternative
    • But this alternate take of the throw (from BTS footage) remains my favorite
  • The space attack on the Resistance cruisers
    • Is it possible to trim or cut the shot of Poe being thrown back from the explosion in the hanger? It looks ridiculous, he’d be dead
    • I cannot support the floating Leia / Mary Poppins sequence whatsoever
    • My suggestion: have the explosion on the bridge, but the next time we see Leia is when they put the Oxygen mask on her
  • Ahch-To Stuff
    • Great job on cutting the “sad eyes” porg. The scene remains funny, but not over the top
    • Also, great work to you (and the community) for the work done to remove the caretakers from the island
    • Getting rid of the “Luke tickling Rey” scene was smart, but I do admit that it felt rather rushed
    • After Rey says, “Okay,” you currently have it cut to Luke throwing away the leaf and telling her to breathe. I would suggest having her say, “Okay… but what is it?” (just as she does in the actual film), and THEN cut to Luke throwing away the leaf. I think this would make the scene feel more complete. Maybe I’m wrong.
    • When Rey confronts Luke just before she leaves Ach-To, I really would like the idea of us seeing some of the TFA “force back” / flashback clips integrated into the moment when Luke looks into Ben Solo’s mind… that way when he ignites his lightsaber, it truly seems like it was out of instinct. Maybe not in your edit if you don’t want, but I would like to see it done by someone.
  • Canto Bight
    • AMAZING. The fact that I can make Canto Bight into only one bullet point should tell you that it was a success. It’s so much faster paced, and I’m all for removing the political BS. You nailed it.
  • On the Star Destroyer
    • I’m not crazy about BB-8 driving an AT-ST, but I don’t know if there’s a way to cut it
    • When Hux is looking at Snoke’s dead body, his lower half falls out of the chair for no reason… cuttable?
  • Finn’s sacrifice scene
    • I’m just sort of thinking out loud for this one
    • I’m still of the opinion that Rose shouldn’t run her speeder into his ship… instead I wish we could make it look like his ship gets shot or maybe that it breaks down before he can sacrifice himself
    • But if we really have to keep Rose, then I like the change you made to cut the stupid “love” line. While I wish they didn’t kiss, that’s going to be hard to cut out, so I guess I’ll deal with it.
  • Luke facing down the First Order / Kylo Ren fight

Only other thoughts…

  • Was really hoping to see a few of the deleted scenes
    • The Finn / Poe deleted scene where Poe is catching Finn up on what’s happening
    • “Luke Mourns,” though I don’t know exactly where it would fit, to be honest
    • And the stormtrooper / elevator deleted scene… the fan-edited one that removes their voices and just makes it more of a tension building sequence is pretty great
  • Finally, I’m curious about your reasoning for moving the Luke / Yoda sequence later in the movie? Not sure how I feel about it because it seems like a much slower scene compared to all the fast paced stuff going on before/after its new placement. Maybe I can appreciate it if I understand the reasoning why it was moved there.

Great work for this first version. I really enjoyed this immensely more than the actual film. While I still have little things to nitpick about, I would absolutely take this over what we initially received. Once again, awesome job.

I’m late to the party here… but again, regarding Canto Bight…

Does anyone else have a problem with the whole “Rose hates rich people” element? Frankly, I would like to take some of the “real world” politics out of that sequence. I get it, war profiteering is bad, but do we really need a conversation about it in Star Wars?

I’d rather cut out that sequence, and never have Rose mention it.

One idea I’ve been thinking about for the past few days is to push the “Luke’s Moment” deleted scene all the way to the point where Rey leaves Ach-Tu. I think that a lot of the issue people took with Luke’s characterization in TLJ was due to how bitter and dismissive he seemed. Obviously he ends up being the Luke Skywalker everybody loves, but we never really see that transition take place. He’s constantly bitter for 90 minutes, has the scene with Yoda, and then is suddenly the hero everybody has dreamt of. But if you move him having a moment in his hut to the point where Rey confronts him about how he turned Ben to the dark side, it’s a lot more meaningful.

This is an interesting idea and I’d like to see it implemented.

I saw this over on the Star Wars subreddit, and I wonder what people think:

Ben was being drawn to the dark side by Snoke. Luke had sensed this in him and went to confront him. He looked inside Ben and saw a vision that Snoke had already turned Ben and he would bring destruction and the end of everything he loved, so Luke in the briefest moment of instinct turned on his lightsaber.

I think the thing that makes it so hard to swallow this scene for many people is that it still doesn’t really look like instinct, despite what Luke says. There’s a bit too much telling here and not enough showing. I think if they had actually shown us Luke’s vision of Ben destroying everything, it might’ve helped put us in his shoes and understand why his instinct was to turn on that lightsaber. It’s made clear that this vision was very bad, so actually showing us that vision would help us clear up that it was just a brief moment of temptation and that Luke wasn’t actually going to follow through and kill Ben.

I still think it’s explained well enough, but the “show, don’t tell” rule exists for a reason, so I think they could’ve done a better job with this scene regardless.

So, this commentator is suggesting that, during Luke’s flashback scene where he reveals that, out of instinct, he ignited his lightsaber… to actually show the atrocities that Luke saw when he looked into Ben’s mind.

Perhaps it would be possible to use some of Rey’s flashback sequence from The Force Awakens during this brief scene to really sell the “instinctual” reason why Luke ignited his lightsaber.

Thoughts?
