I hope someone will be able to pick up the torch, and do (as they said they intended) with the 97s as was done with the OTVs - I think there’s opportunity with HD scans of the 97s alongside the OTVs and the 2004 HDTV rips, with the BDs.

I usually wouldn’t care about SE’s, but the way you put it, with the fan-OTV’s, HDTV rips and, of course, the BDs, you’re right that the 97SEs actually are the only hold outs of Star Wars versions to be available to fans in decent quality. For this small last step toward having all revisions available for people to choose from, I agree with you.

Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI - Grindhouse 35mm LPP (Released)
Time

Crap… I thought at first it was part of the interchange between the meat vendor and that thief Jar-Jar, whom immediately got karma-slapped by Sebulba… My bad for not checking (and for not writing this at home where it would be easier to corroborate such things); you’re right, carry on with your valid reference.

Edit: Maybe I really do need to work on my sleep habits, I’m really slipping lately.

Can’t wait for it to get off this internet thing I’m just starting to hear about (I mean, honestly, what is with that? it sounds odd), and back onto the sneakernet where it obviously belongs.

Sure man, as soon as I’m done downloading I’ll bring my hard drive over and let you copy it B)

Sure. I’d buy 'em if I could - even though I have no way to play them because to date I have refused to spend a penny on BluRay anything.

There is no “I can” with these three movies, because everyone involved has spent the last 20 years trying to bury them. That’s why piracy happens. But let’s not kid ourselves - “ethical” piracy, so much as one can define such a thing, is piracy. (I’m preaching to the choir, I know.)

I can only hope that what we (I’ve been involved in this kind of matter for over a decade now myself) have been doing will result in the RIGHT thing happening, which is something similar to what we’re aiming for being released, not by fans, but by Fox and/or the Rat.

This rings oddly familiar of moral lesson stated at the end of Disney’s own “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl”.

If you’re right (I’m not here to start an argument) then Harmy has lied not only to me but to tens of thousands of OT fans, if not more. I have no clue why he couldn’t just do it legally, but if what you’re saying is true, then he’s just as wrong as them. I’m not as concerned for the fate of his movies, as much as I am for the fact that thousands of people have unknowingly broke the law because of this. I was planning something similar to this. I was going to try to preserve the home video releases of the OT. The first thing I was planning to do was contact Lucasfilm for permission. They would not be up for public viewing or downloading, by they could be used in some way for educational purposes.

First, do you have a link to just this Lucasfilm fanfare? I, obviously, did not participate in the digital versions, so I don’t know what you are referring to. Nevermind, I found it; it sucks.

Second, what makes you say they would, pre 2020, put “Episode IV: A New Hope” in the crawl? The GOUT didn’t have it, and that was the most recent official original version put out under Lucasfilm/Fox.

It is arguable whether it is a minor concern. I know I feel it would be quite a shame if it was taken out. Either way, it is definitely at least a valid concern, as Disney has already done it once with their digital downloads of all the films but Star Wars “Episode IV: A New Hope” (as they like to call it), as that is Fox’s property still. They could well do it again, which would be very sad, since that’d still be them altering our perception of history, Fox was the only studio that went out on a limb to produce Star Wars, sure they wouldn’t be putting out the home video version of it (well, I suppose this concern only would take hold after 2020), but their important role in making the original films should not be diminished because ownership changed hands 30 - 40 years later. If Disney ends up wanting to mess with the opening credit, they they should do their own logo first, followed by Fox’s logo with fanfare, then the untouched movie.

Again, if projects like this force their hand early, before all the rights change over, then the question of Fox fanfare inclusion would likely be moot with Fox handling the physical distribution.

It isn’t good to poke the bear this hard and display their ineptitude this publicly… At the same time, if they were to take down the distribution of a version of the film they don’t offer if they don’t have any plans they could admit to for their own upcoming release of the OUT, then there would be a backlash from pissed off fans they might not be prepared to handle (and hard questions they’re not prepared to answer). I have to assume Lucasfilm/Disney/Fox are not happy with how good fan-produced preservations are getting, compared to what they’re selling, but they may continue to steadfastly turn the other cheek until they make the inevitable decision to produce an OUT of their own, at which time they can C&D versions like this without coming across as the Devil to the fanbase they want to continue have happily buying their merchandise and buying their movie tickets.

On the other hand, they know what we want, but have to justify doing it, and if anything is going to make these companies agree to do it while they share rights, it might just take fervor over quality releases like this to push them over the edge to get off their butts and make the boatload of cash they’ve been leaving on the table.

Meh, I’d say more of a grey area than a derail, as he already has his PC setup as he likes it, but it is relevant to playback quality in general. I will say, I didn’t realize how prevalent that nvidia 23.976 issue is; I’m increasingly glad I’ve gone with a minimalist approach to my HTPCs with efficient Intel powered setups like the ECS LIVA for the short run, and will probably only upgrade later on to something similar that can support HEVC when that becomes more common.

Still, the most important thing right now would probably be the sound system he’ll connect his A/V sources to, as the computer and other inputs would hopefully change more often than his sound system.

Harmy, I may be in a similar boat right now (ignoring speakers) as an Onkyo receiver I’ve had for over half a decade has been slowly starting to crap out, if soldering in new capacitors doesn’t fix it (and it’ll be my first solder job, so I won’t say I’m confident with the fix) I’ll need to start seriously considering a receiver purchase (but definitely staying with the quality AVR route, I’m never going back to “normal” speaker setups). But I do stand to get 3D BD support and a few other features which I’ve had to do without for a while if I upgrade/replace…

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Again, it is not hard at all to make something from the MKVs that’ll burn to a BD and play properly. But if you must have menus and lower quality audio, then no, there aren’t custom BD25’s yet of those films, I doubt anyone will put one out of Empire until after v2.5 comes out anyway, and Jedi hasn’t been out very long.

If your nVidia cards can output perfect 23.976Hz, or a multiple of this, then disregard my comment.
All other refresh rates will produce judder and/or dropped/repeated frames for film content.
I have had no personal issues with full RGB mode though.

If we’re going to cram video card discussions into the scope of this topic, then specific claims like these should be supported with relevant links. Harmy’s PC setup is one thing I think he has put some effort into making fit his needs for the projects he works on. It would take some irrefutable proof that one vendor’s cards or models of cards is better for what he wants to do, before he’d start changing things up in it.

If I thought Harmy had a mid to low end PC (which I really doubt, though I’d maybe ask this if he was considering using his old laptop for a dedicated HTPC instead of pulling double duty with his desktop), then arguments could also be made about what model cards allow HD audio passthrough (like nvidia cards below the 600 line [various exceptions, though] don’t support it, though AMD has for longer and Intel has been good about it, too…).

What WOULD be in scope, regardless of video card opinions, would be which audio output device/API in Windows will allow for HD audio passthrough. From what I’ve come across, WASAPI allows HD audio passthrough where DirectSound (a middle layer which resamples audio) does not: http://kodi.wiki/view/Audio_quickstart_guide and http://kodi.wiki/view/Windows_audio (Which actually is similar to ALSA vs PulseAudio in Linux.)
