Mr. Trump directed those comments to friends dining nearby at the exclusive club — including to two friends at a table near the president’s who described the remark to CBS News — as he began his final days of his first year in office in what has become known as the “Winter White House.”

The president himself on Sept. 13 — long before the bill was finalized — said the wealthy would not benefit from the GOP tax overhaul.

“The rich will not be gaining at all with this plan. We are looking for the middle class and we are looking for jobs – jobs being the economy,” Mr. Trump said.

Sometimes I look at past discussions and debates that I’ve had over my tenure here. As a fairly hypercritical person, I’m always quite stunned by how much I’m dismayed at my past self for the way he made certain points or the way he argued things or the way he said something. Past me and I have significant disagreements, maybe not on the issues being discussed, but how they were discussed. I wonder how often I take my self-criticisms to heart — am I getting better? The truth is, we’re all a work in progress. A few months down the line, I’ll look at things that happened around this time, including most likely this very post, and make some more criticisms of myself, and the cycle will repeat itself in an almost methodical and predictable way.
