That’s insane. What I’m going back to is the previous thing I was on.

If I recall correctly, the application decides what the back button means, which could be anything at all, and not the previous “thing.”

Apps without immediately obvious back buttons, or any back button at all, are the fundamental flaw…and thus the iPad is a fundamental flaw.

A statement with no good logic is as useless as no statement.

The fact that the iPad does not have a back button is the stupidest thing ever.

The back button has a fundamental flaw: You don’t know what you’re going back to. It could be anything. That’s user hostile behavior.

The way iOS handles this is better, and gives more clarity. You understand exactly what’s going on when you click a back button. That’s better for the user, and avoids confusion. If a user is constantly confused by a paradigm, they’re more likely to stop using it.

I am all those things.

So you’re a free drink service that also has some sort of calculation tool integrated along with response to information that can’t be argued who is a girl who has sex after having a lot of alcohol that’s also an Ancient Greek creature goose-chicken crossover (plus all the other things at Urban Dictionary) who’s also an underwater photographer that also happens to be a community center, and a baptist church‽

You must have a lot on your plate.

There is an inadequate use of synthetic (and annoying) sounds. Not a big fan of how Williams composed (and orchestrated) this short sequence.

I concur. The synth sounds are a little bit too “80s theremin” to me. It sounds dated, and doesn’t really make an impact.

It’s a weird spot in a mostly excellent soundtrack.

Frink would not approve of this opinion…

Care to share with the group?

I think you’re going to get a snarky comment from the bigger Frink.

Why?

John pointed out all the things that Marco did wrong, which I mostly agree with. But there’s still some valid criticism there: The “graphics driver crashed but it has recovered” message is totally unnecessary. You shouldn’t have to worry about activating Windows.

Apple said:
Your computer restarted because of a problem.

This isn’t much better, and incidentally, I see it way more often these days since OS X’s famous stability has gone downhill. Also, MS has traditionally been a software company, not a hardware company, so giving away the OS doesn’t exactly fit their business model. I get why it requires an activation key and phones home to register.

There may be an explanation, but that doesn’t change the nature of the problem. Apple sold software for years and never asked for an activation key. (You could draw an analogy to the iTunes Store and the DRM on there, but that’s mostly the content owner’s fault, not Apple’s)

It’s like you didn’t even listen. Marco pointed out the game his wife was trying to play was Inside, not No Man’s Sky.

I played it at 2x. It was like listening to paint dry. Now I know what it’s like to listen to nerds talk about computers, so I think I’m done with this thread. I’ll also never talk about computers again in front of anyone else, because I think the U.N. could classify it as torture.

Apparently thousands of people don’t.

A Strange Bookmark Folder Proliferation

I have a lot of browser bookmarks, most of them organized into a sophisticated hierarchy that I don’t really use. Now, this morning I was trying to add a bookmark to a folder. I thought I added it to the correct folder, but the bookmark wasn’t there. I realized the problem: I was adding it to the wrong folder.

Let me explain. Over the years I have exported an imported all my bookmarks to and from different browsers, different versions and the such. Now, every time I move my bookmarks to a new browser, the old imported ones are still there. This has happened several times, so there are several folders deep of imports from old browsers.

I was adding the bookmark to one of the imported bookmark folders that wasn’t in use anymore. Now, there’s a simple solution: Why not just add it to the correct folder? Well, there was a stumbling block.

As I tried to scroll up in the pull-down list, I noticed something strange. Thousands and thousands of folders simply named iPhone case. I pulled into the bookmark manager to investigate. All the folder named iPhone case were in another folder. (Also — all the folders had zero items in them — strange. I must have created the folder to use one day but never did.) I checked the item count on the parent folder, and alas, the item count was 1,010! So I delete all the folders. But all the thousands of iPhone case folders were still there.

Now I figured out how this came to be: Some wrong sync, some error in the move must have caused this folder to be multi-plicated. Those folder proliferated through all the moves and imports, therefore being multiple cases of the case folder.

So I spent the whole morning deleting all the case folders. This allowed me to scroll through the pull-down list without it having to take ages, and therefore I could add the bookmark to the correct folder. That was the mission.

And that mission was accomplished.

More on why Windows is terrible:

https://overcast.fm/+CdTNu0Vk/44:04

Is that Marco Arment’s podcast? It’s Mac users like those that help explain why PC users think we’re all smug morons who can’t use any consumer product without an “i” in front of the name.

And that’s even before getting into the technical aspects they don’t understand. No Man’s Sky, which they purchased for Windows because it wasn’t available for their PS4 and they didn’t want to buy an Xbox, is available on…PS4, not Xbox. I don’t feel sorry for anyone who spends a day trying to get Windows running because they didn’t spend 30 seconds researching the game first. Dur.

It’s like you didn’t even listen. Marco pointed out the game his wife was trying to play was Inside, not No Man’s Sky.

Also, lol at trying to run any current game, let alone that game, on a 5K display with iMac graphics hardware and expecting good framerates. Double dur.

And lol again at installing Windows via Bootcamp on an external drive on a MacBook Pro, then acting surprised that it needed to install different drivers when connected to an iMac. Do these people even know how computers work?

^ Rhetorical question

John pointed out all the things that Marco did wrong, which I mostly agree with. But there’s still some valid criticism there: The “graphics driver crashed but it has recovered” message is totally unnecessary. You shouldn’t have to worry about activating Windows.

And Marco should at least know something about how computers work, as he does do programming professionally.
