Star Wars ROTJ beta v2.0 now completed. (Released)

(Screen Shots)

I am pleased to announce that I have finished ROTJ 2.0, from a face lifting point of view… My later releases will contain custom edits with the additions of some of the original deleted scenes, that I am working with other forum members on with privately.

I am  now rendering a FULL 22 BD version with DTS audio 6.1.  Once complete I put it online via the usual channels. (MONDAY) 3/30/2015

List of work done:

–Re- Rottoscoped all laser blasts and 98% of the light saber shots. Some were already done from the studio and originally looked pretty good (2%) :}

–Added minor light flares to improve certain shots.

–Added Professional Muzzle flashes on most weapons.

–Added impact Flashes on most of the Action Sequences as this enhanced many of the battle sequences.

–Added Better lighting effects to the Falcon, as it was entering the death star.

–Replaced all Falcon Engine shots, All of the Engine shots are now a blue glow.

– The only shot I have regrets with is the Super Star Destroyer crashing into the death star, I added extra explosions to mask a little of the cheezness of the original fireball, but outside of re-shooting this sequence all together, there is not a lot more I can do… Its a bad shot and needs re-shot.

I am currently working to clean up the footage from the deleted scenes. (this is at a request from other members of this forum.  For a possible later addition, below is some screen shots from this.  They will not be in Version 2.1 but possible 3.0 or someone else’s edit. As you know the deleted scenes are in SD, I unconverted the footage to 1080p and got rid of the horrible interlacing artifacts and add a comprehensive about of Noise reduction,  and added a nice  polished HD Kodak film grain. (this smooths a lot of the garbage out).  I am now working on removing most of the film scratches, and bad splices.  The shots still need to be color corrected, but I will do this when I get everything else done.  Once this is complete then I will work on creating laser blast effects, ect. Below are the screen shots.

I really wanted to add Sebastian Shaw as a ghost as the end but I do not have any source material to work with.  Any help with obtaining this 20 second clip 1080p (MAX Quality) would be a great help. I then would be able to add it to a future 2.1 release.

But for now Enjoy!!!

I'm not talkig about any of your screenshots, I am just wondering if you are taking out the shadows that the sabers give off throughout the movies, they look like the shadow of a stick (which they are really) and they kind of bugging me so I was just wondering if oyu're doing that, thanks! :)

No, that would involve clone stamping other frames to mask a shadow and that is a road I do not want to go down as it would consume too much of my time.

Possessed,

There is a sequence I wanted your input on before i continue, I am talking about when the rebels first enter the shield generator station, there is a sound in the soundtrack that references chewbacca's crossbow as if it was fired to create a forced entry.

All that really happens in the scene is the door opens and they enter.  I was planning of adding sparks and some smoke to give a better perspective of how they got the doors open, but I wanted your thoughts on this cut point before working the effects in.. (if you were planning on deleting the audio laser blast, there would be no point of adding these elements.

If I don't here from you by tonight I will render both versions one with additions and one without.

}{eywood: You're making at least four different claims. I'll address each one individually here.

1. HD looks artificial

If this is true, then 35mm film must look artificial to you as well. 35mm film is capable (demonstrably!) of resolving to >4K. And yes, this is true for release prints as well.

Are you perhaps arguing that television technology has something to do with this artificial appearance instead? See #4.

2. Reality doesn't look as sharp as HD

If this is true, then you must need glasses. Please visit an Ophthalmologist ASAP.

I'm not kidding. Your eyes should be able to see much more than 480 or 576 lines. Your blurry vision might pose a significant danger to yourself or the people around you. Living life with SD eyes is uncivil and irresponsible.

3. People aren't modest enough in their choice of television size and technology

Why do you care? I have a 5ft. plasma in my living room (for Blu-rays) and a 2.5ft. CRT in my basement (for LDs), so am I rocking all this bling too or am I an exception to your observation?

4. Modern television sets make everything look like shit

They do? Are you sure you have the EE and DNR (and other BS features) turned off? Are you sure your set has a good black level? Are you sure you're using a good source; e.g., the Lawrence of Arabia blu-ray?

Come back after seeing Lawrence of Arabia on an ISF calibrated Pioneer Kuro set and let me know if you still hold this opinion.

Now I understand why some people can be grumpy around here.

I certainly was not kidding.  I think HD looks artificial, like CGI looked before they figured out they needed to add motion blur to the frames. I also think people are sporting too much bling with these ridiculously large televisions. Half the reason we have to have everything in HD is the enormous screen sizes.  The other half is flatscreens automatically make everything look like shit.  I'll stick to CRT screens, which I am completely satisfied with the quality of, until I can't find them anymore.  Better that than have to replace my entire video collection with one that's twice as big but has no more content

I think you need to go see your eye doctor and have your prescription changed or issued.

I understand your point with CRT's giving batter blacks ect.  But from a technical perspective your post makes no sense.

My question about this project is are you removing the lightsaber shadows? In the scene where luje gets his lightsaber you see it off to the left and in the last Vader vs. Luke battle you see lightsaber shadows all over, will you get rid of them or modify them? I have read some debate over this but I beleive that they shouldn't give off shadow as they are a source of light, even if it is plasma it is STILL glowing and gives off quite a bit of light so I'd like to see your opinion on this. Also what is your main source for these? Are you using Harmy's despecialized editions or are you using some other source, thanks! :)

I am not clear on which screen shot you are referring to?  Could you be more specific?

My source is the original BD box set (all 6 films).  I am not modifying any one's else fan edit

I have to say, these look wonderful in motion.  The sabers in ROTJ are still too fat, but that's unavoidable given the source.  Other than the width they now match the other films.  And the blaster shots look great too.

The scene with Jabba gets killed, the studio actually re scoped luke's green saber or certain scenes from it.  I just did the shots they did not do in that sequence. I am working this project from a linear perspective, only matter of time before I re scope the main light saber dual.  That is going to be a Bitch!!  (because of the extensive masking that I will need to do)

why cap at 720p?  no 1080p?

The current OT Bluray transfers only hold up to 720p, there is no detail loss between a 1080p and 720p using the outdated Lowry masters.

Also, the rendering times is greatly increased in 1080p when compared to 720p.

Furthermore, the revisited PT will require more drastic cropping to certain shots, as well as (maybe) integration of upscaled deleted scenes.  So 720p, across the saga is better for consistentsy.

Not if you convert the source material to 4k and crop in 4k, this will preservative some detail.  Down converting back to 1080p is a soft process.

People will wait days for a download of your edit but your concerned with  processing time and encode time? (I am all about the quality here)

There is a hell of a difference between 720p and 1080p on my 160" projection system at home. (Native 1080p HD projector)

Quality is everything, and as much as ADYWAN's DVD version blew me away when I first watched it,   (blu-ray) was right around the corner, it was difficult to watch on a 1080p screen.  Now with rumors soon that a 6 films will be released on 4k, it just gives me the sense that in the end you might be redoing all of your hard work over again. Lets face it, 4K is very close to the actual resolution of 35mm film, and it is not going to get much better than that. (not to mention you can buy 4k video camera's to go along with this.

And who knows... maybe we will see a original star wars 1978 version on 4k sometime soon.  (the sky will be the limit then...)

I'm happy to announce that this edit will feature segments of xxtelecine 7xx's Star Wars Continuity Project.  :)  Much thanks to him for allowing this collaboration.

I had already planned on giving the lightsabers white cores, but his method sure beats my method of merely subtly boosting the contrast in certain shots.

Also, if anybody cares about this I'm using the blu ray sound mix for most of this.

Thanks for the credit!!  Possessed will be receiving more segments as they get finished.  I am going to keep most of my work under wraps until Possessed finishes his project.

Criticism can be sometime harsh here specifically from people that have no AE experience or editing skills.  A lot of compromises have to be made to rework (non-original source material) All of my effects are re-roto-scoped with the best quality and intention possible. I think Possessed truly understands this as such a collaboration was discussed.

Was the only scene that I did not re-scope light-sabers, because my presets did not do well with a scene that was original shot in 24fps then slowed it down more with slow motion with repeated frames. It just looked ugly (usually if you going to film a slow motion scene you shoot at 48fps then playback at 24 I thought just would have looked bad.  I just had a Idea to create a more dreaming effect.

The screen shots do not do it justice.  If you could watch the entire sequence it actually works. I kind of came up with the idea watching the last few episodes of the clone wars cartoon series where Yoda seemed to have a way up putting people in hypnotic episodes to being one with the force..  My guess is this is what they were trying to do.  I was just enhancing the idea a little bit more. (but nothing is ever final, could always be re-worked.
