The Ric Olie Observation Thread

You, sir, have obviously never seen an official Naboo Birth Certificate.  Even in that blurry state, it is a clear forgery.  I may have to turn you over to the Naboo Birth Certificate Council On Verifying Official Birth Certificates, Which Are The Certificates The People Of Naboo Receive At Birth, or NBCCOVOBCWATCTPONRAB for short.

As you have no doubt guessed, members of my family hold several positions on the Council.

You and your ilk, would be very well suited for the NBCCOVOBCWATCTPONRAB.  They would be very good at observing who is born and at what time and to whom.

Oh, and also check your facts about this stuff before saying I'm not from Naboo:

Re-Cast Star Wars

What if Episode seven came out ten years after return of the jedi in 1993?

That's what I meant.  As long as we're suggesting the movies be made right after RotJ, then release the prequels in 86, 89, and 92 and release the sequels in 95, 98 and 2001.  Then it's 12 years later for Mark Hamill and co and they can come back to play slightly different roles in the sequel trilogy.

Why does the EU hate villains?
Time

Octo- I don't think that tact is far off subject:  Why does [modern literature] hate [good and evil]?

It reminds me of a great line in Zero Effect (one of my faves, by the by): Zero has more or less stated that does his job to protect innocent people from evil people.  You know, the bad guys.  His assistant, goes off on him, There aren't evil guys and innocent guys. It's just... It's just... It's just a bunch of guys!

I do agree that there is good and evil in all of us.  However, I do think there is actual good and evil.  I do think that there are people we can accurately call "Good" because they are overwhelmingly so.  And likewise I believe there are people we can call "Bad" or "Evil".  Or, rather, "Heroes" and "Villains."

Moral relativism says that "This is true/good for you, but it is false/bad for me."  That I don't agree with.  I think truth is truth, and good is good, and that there are people who wrongly disagree.  But that's me.

Where did the Mon Calamari come from?
Time

It's true, but he's got a point.  Perhaps the Empire, once upon a time in Lucas's mind, was only concerned with human planets or planets with large human populaces.  That doesn't really jive with my original or preferred take on the story, but the first two movies themselves could be read that way.  The fact that they push a few jawas around while in pursuit of humans doesn't mean that they mean to rule over all aliens in the galaxy.  And the name "Galactic Empire" could sort of be interpreted like "United Nations" or "United States of America."  There are other nations or states in the area that don't belong, but that doesn't stop anyone from using the name somewhat globaly.  Or galactically, as the case may be.

Halloween Costumes '09 through '012 (was Costumes '09)
Time

Post your costumes, your kids costumes, or your costume ideas.

The Xhonzi's are going, appropriately, Star Wars this year!

I am going as Dagobah Luke with my 3 month old son ("Baby Yoda") in my blue burlap backpack.

My 6 year old son is going as Darth Vader, except for at school and church where masks aren't allowed so he's going there as "Luke's vision of his own face under the mask of the phantom Darth Vader."

My 4.5 year old daughter is going as CinnamonBun Leia.

My 3 year old daughter is going as RD22 (Ardee-Tutu).  Get it.  Tu-tu?  This is actually pretty cute, she calls him "Ardeetoo" and when the older kids tell her it's "R2-D2", she says, "No, I'm not Ardee-Tutu, I'm Ardeetoo!"

And my wife... it's come to attention that there is a dearth of good female characters in the Original Trilogy.  So... she's going as Hanna Solo.  Or "Generic Female Smugler of the Star Wars Universe."  Or, since she's wearing a red wig... and we've been reading Zahn's trilogy for her first time... Mara Jade.

Anyways, we have them all done because we had our first halloween party last weekend.  I'll have to post some pictures when we get some good ones.

I also hate how the whole thing takes place in one little area. I wish there was a way to change the story around and make it more epic.  Not just on a Sail Barge.

It's an escape from the sail barge. What more do you want? Random starfighters, a herd of rancors, dueling sarlacs and a one armed Wampa back for revenge with its own rival sail barge?

And that would be the besht mosht awesomesht thing ever!

Where did the Mon Calamari come from?

Of course, no one goes to a movie and roots for the aliens to win (unless it's Aliens vs Predator, of course. Or District 9).

We shall see how well that works in Avatar this December.

Actually, it was part of Smallville that I really liked circa Season 3.  Clark's superpowers might have come from Krypton, but his sense of justice came from Kansas.  When Superman Returns came out, one of the major turn offs to me was that Kal-El sent him to Earth to protect mankind, and also to show them the way to live.  So humans were inferior on all accounts.  Awesome.

Where did the Mon Calamari come from?
Time

Wait!

Are there any aliens in the Rebellion until Jedi?  I was talking to my friend about the role of "humans" in SciFi.  I offered the opinion that in 90% of SciFi, humans are shown to be technologically inferior, but somehow morally superior.  He responded that in his experience, 90% of SciFi showed humans to be technologically superior.  We both used Star Wars as our argument.  He pointed out that humans run the Empire- humans run the rebellion.  Aliens hang out at bars, are co-pilots, or are criminals.  I pointed out that the Empire is run by humans and for humans, but that the Rebellion was "indiscriminate" and "equal work for equal pay."  But then he pointed out that the Rebellion on Yavin is almost all middle aged white human males, and that Hoth is only a little better (if you count the female radio operator and all of the tauntauns).

So... was this a budget limitation?  Or were aliens intentionally left out of the Rebellion till RotJ.
