Politics and Storytelling (Superheroes)
Time

I know a lot of storytellers tend to find themselves in more "liberal" societies, but I think there are a lot of conservative values inherent to storytelling.  Especially certain genres.

Recently, several superhero things have stuck out to me as very odd.  The Mrs. and I were watching this season of Smallville (Superman's a conservative, right?) and they introduced a "right wing radio host who is on a campaign against [Superman]".  And my first thought, as a conservative with more than his fair share of comics and other superhero paraphernalia around the house, is- Yeah, because conservatives haaaaaaaate superheroes.

I mean, there's all of that "right and wrong" and "with power comes responsibility" and "using violence to solve problems" and "criminals are bad" and "people using violence to solve problems CAN BE THE GOOD GUYS" and "saving innocent people from guilty people" etc...

Maybe it's one of those issues where both sides of the political divide want to claim what's good and desirable from pop culture... but I thought it was sort of a given that the superhero genre had certain tropes that made it more conservative friendly than a lot of other genres ("adult" comedies, for example).

I was reading Green Lantern Blackest Night which also had some liberal jabs at conservatives, and there was something else recently too.

Anyways, have at it.

Superman The Movie Audio Problem
Time

My son (who's 7.5 now) has long been a Batman TAS fan.  In fact, we have video from his 2nd birthday where he got Season 2.  I remember at the time that we were all excited to give him another season because we'd all been watching Season 1- the same 10 hours of it, several times a week.  My mother-in-law was there and expressed sincere concern that it was not an appropriate gift for a 2 year old... but I countered that he really enjoyed it and was very excited about it.

Watching the homevideo now, it does shock me at how young my son was when he was watching that show...  but he was really into it.

However, he's not into the Fleischer Superman stuff... he's not a serious collector.

That makes it:

Warbler has watched The Exorcist(was: Warbler has watched The Exorcist(was: Warbler has watched The Exorcist(was Should Warbler watch The Exorcist?)(was: Should Warbler watch the Exorcist?))
