Well that's the real trick, isn't it.

It's kind of a shame that Disney won't release the unedited version (they did release Education for Death, after all) - but the trick with any reel of film is whether it has the unedited version intact. I know of one unscrupulous seller that when asked if it was unedited, replied "yes," and when the buyer received it, found that it had been cropped, and the seller said he meant that "the scene hadn't been cut altogether." Not cool.

Ideas, Info & Help Wanted: a 16mm Telecine-Projector Project
Time

As some of you may know, I have a couple of prints I’m interested in preserving - a 16mm low-fade print of American Graffiti, and (the more interesting of the two) a 16mm low-fade 1st generation print of Song of the South.

Another member and I are attempting to build a telecine machine from a 16mm projector, and will then begin the scanning. However, it is this first step which is the most difficult, so this thread was created to get some ideas as to how we might go about modifying the projector. Our plan is to set up a digital camera in the lens, and illuminating the film with an ultra-bright LED. The projector will be slowed to 1 fps, and a computer connection will enable the projector to notify both the camera and the computer that a frame has been captured, and that it will now move to the next frame.

If anyone has any ideas or advice, please let us know!

Thanks in advance!

Song Of The South - many projects, much info & discussion thread (Released)

The problem wouldn't really be in cost, but in finding a lab that would do it. MVerta knows of one, but last I checked it was close to $3-4000 to do a transfer. Granted, that would be for a first class transfer, but it is still nothing to sneeze at. Otherwise, a pool of money could go to buying one of the HD units like Puggo has - those run about $5000, IIRC.

I'll definitely keep people posted on the projector process. I wonder if I should start a new thread?

@monks19: The first attempt was not with this footage, but was just black and white (to test contrast and brightness) and the results were not that great. I used an Epson V750 scanner, set at the highest DPI, and it just wasn't that high of resolution. I think it is because the scanner glass was in the way, but I couldn't think of a way to eliminate that...

@SS4DarthPayne: That's the idea. This is one of my favorite movies, so my plan is to preserve it at the highest possible resolution so that everyone can enjoy it. :)

Ok, so I missed the anniversary by a few days, but I broke out Song of the South tonight for a family screening, and was once again blown away by how good it looked. I'm determined to get this backed up - it is an awesome source, and I can't believe how much detail there is in this print!

The pics I took were just from R2, and from the pre-screening/cleaning process, so they weren't shot against my proper screen (and were shot in the afternoon) so the lines you see running through the pics are not on the print (obviously). I've got a video uploading to Vimeo right now, and I'll post a link as soon as I can.

Anyway, without further ado, here are the pics:

...What is even worse is that it will spread to your other films - you can't store VS films anywhere near non-VS films...

That is so crazy.  How is that even possible??

I think it has to do with the fact that VS is a problem caused by developing solutions left on the film - I think it "spreads" to the other films by the gas of the developing solutions from the VS film spreading to the non-VS films...

OK, to set the record straight about the film stuff, as that is my background: Yes, film is archival safe, given a few assumptions. First, that it is processed correctly. Basically the vinegar syndrome is film that is still developing - it wasn't washed properly at the lab before it was released. It is chemicals trapped in the film stock that are still continuing to develop the film. Second, that it is good film stock - Eastman stock (the type that Star Wars was shot on) was horrendous, as far as fading. Not that all Eastman film is bad (a Kodak company), but that the type of film called "Eastman" is bad - it came out in the '70s (IIRC) and is incredibly prone to fading. The colors all fade to red - not desirable in most films. :)

American Graffiti - Original Cut Restoration (Mechanical Assistance/Telecine Experts Needed!) (* unfinished project *) - lots of information...
Time

Here's a pretty raw capture from reel 3: http://www.mediafire.com/?n512bgjw50g7t42

I hear "Some Enchanted Evening" at about the 14 minute mark, so I guess this is the reissue. In any case, I'm still planning on transferring it, as no good transfer exists (the Blu-ray is horrid - I saw it today and if you thought Star Wars was waxy, wait until you see this!). It was shot on Techniscope and should look it!

I plan on scanning emulsion side (we'll see how that works) at at least 1080p resolution (we're adapting a camera to make it work), so it should have a pretty good picture.
