Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Dunno if this has already been brought up or not, pretty big thread.

The costuming reminds me of medieval Europe (Kylo looks very monk-like, the hilt swings him closer to feudal knight and away from feudal samurai). This makes me think the story draws from post-roman empire history for inspiration of what happened over the last 30 years. The first order may be more of a sith-based religious group, and they are in the middle of their own crusade for sith/jedi artifacts like Luke's lightsaber and Vaders helmet.

Although I do think that is Luke in the trailer looking at his fathers helmet, but that's just a hunch.

ROTJ is the best Star Wars film... discuss!
Time

This page has gone way off topic in the last few posts. Back to topic...

Since I posted the OP 2 years ago the critical consensus on the 6 current SW films hasn't changed much (According to Rotten Tomatoes) but it has changed...

Star Wars 93% (-1)
The Empire Strikes Back 96% (-1)
Return of the Jedi 78% (-1)
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 57% (=)
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones 67% (=)
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith 80% (=)

So people still feel exactly the same about the prequels, they like the original-trilogy a bit less (Surprising given the recent OT love expressed in the lead up to TFA) and they still think ROTS is better than ROTJ but now they prefer ROTS even more!

Madness I say! I still can't really understand why many are so dissatisfied with ROTJ, that they'd actually start thinking it was worse than the prequels.

Not sure how the hell anyone can rationally consider AOTC a better movie than PM. After reading some of the reviews I feel like they are judging the prequels on expectations rather than actual content. The hype for PM was legendary, and the dissapointment was equally legendary. By the time Sith rolled around the bar had fallen quite a bit. Meanwhile the ROTJ reviews are mostly upset that it's not Empire.

But Attack of the Clones is one of the worst films I have ever watched. The dialogue is not at all representative of how human beings interact. The editing is slow and the shot design unimaginative. Practically every dialogue scene is a flat-angle shot reverse shot. The tone is all over the place. The plot and character motivations are incredibly confusing. I still don't know who the hell commissioned the clone army and why (and it shouldn't require reading an EU novel to understand that), why no one could plainly see that Palpatine is the Sith they're looking for, why a 50's diner owner is more knowledgeable than 900 year old Yoda, or why Anakin's fall to the dark side isn't complete and the prequel trilogy doesn't end when he murders an entire village of sand people.

Star Wars: Rogue One - * Non Spoiler Discussion Thread *
Time

I'm pretty excited about what they could do with this. Every other studio seems to be focused on reboots and rehashes of old story lines with their tent pole franchises to exploit nostalgia. I think that's a big mistake and audiences will eventually grow tired of it.

What annoyed me about the EU was so much of it revolved around the original cast or their kids. It made the universe feel small.

Fox has been doing pretty much the same thing with X-men. They have a huge volume of rich characters and story lines to pull from, yet all but one movie has been centered on Wolverine.

Marvel/Disney are doing it right by expanding their universe beyond the typical super hero movie to appeal to different audiences and not bore their current fans. I have no doubt Disney wants to do the same with Star Wars.

Implied starting date of the Empire from OT dialogue
Time

I never interpreted the dagobah dialogue in that way either, but it does mesh with one of my bigger PT gripes.

I always imagined Jedi training would be mysterious, grungy, and very under the radar. Luke going to dagobah was a pilgrimage that all Jedi candidates would undertake when they were ready. Instead it was portrayed like attending grade school.

That's true for the OT. Interestingly, I don't think that applies to the PT, though. I think the effects decreased in quality in AOTC, but got better for ROTS. I still think TPM looks the best out of the PT... effects-wise.

That's probably due to the fact that Lucas, in his utterly irrational desire that AOTC be the first major film shot entirely digitally, considerably downscaled everything by going from real 35mm film in TPA to native 1080p in Episode II.

How well I remember sitting in the theater on May 16, 2002; and, when the Naboo ship explodes as Padme's decoy walks down the ramp, I gasped and said aloud: "That looks so bad! Why does that look so bad?!"

I just watched clones tonight for the first time since it was in theaters. I must have blocked it all out, the effects really are just awful. Thank god it's forever stuck at 1080p.

And why the hell is Wessel a changeling? No character ever acknowledges it, it doesn't advance the plot in any way, and it is confusing as hell for the audience.

On Chewies eyes, I'm not sure there's any doctoring, or it's incomplete. He has the same look in a Force for Change video.

I'm wondering if Peters vision is not what it used to be and he cannot wear contacts, or the original design is no longer comfortable at 70. There's also a taller guy in there in a black jump suit with eye black that might be a stunt double. He didn't appear to have blue eyes, but you'd think they would just give him blue contacts.

The growl also seems out of sync and too hard of a sound effect for a subtle mouth movement. I bet it's a generic placeholder from their sfx archives, and Han and Chewie were a last minute addition to the trailer.

Is it Peter's stunt double in the trailer? I know it is in the Force For Change video. Even with the knee replacement he has trouble walking and I'm afraid that they will need to have a new person learn from Mayhew to take over as Chewbacca. Especially if he is going to be a big part of the next two, which makes sense because everyone loves Chewie.

Probably. I saw Peter at a Disney World Star Wars Weekend maybe a month after they had started shooting. He was in an emv most of the time and really struggled to move at all without a lot of assistance. It was nice to see him walking so well at this celebration.

John Boyega and Daisy Ridley somehow look so OT-Star Wars in this 2nd trailer (Not totally sure I know what I mean by that).

For one, this many hairs being out of place wouldn't have been tolerated on the Prequels. Also Daisy distorting her facial muscles into something that aproximates convincing acting wouldn't have been allowed either ;-)

And on location.
