SUPERMAN 2 CRYSTAL EDITION
Time
How long do you think it will be until you release it? I'm very impatient to see this now...teasing us with a teaser like that.

But yeah, the teaser was great, because with the soundtrack and only showing the bad guys as real badasses (instead of the slapstick humor that was used in the movie), it gives it this real epic feel that I love. They never, ever should have made Zod and them humorous or stupid like they did.

Eh, it's a little hard to tell what all you've done with the scene from the divx you posted, so I'll wait til the final cut before I say anything more.

I don't know why the scene rubbed me the wrong way. It's not really a big deal, and I do adore the movie. I think a lot of it has to do with not having seen the movie in quite a long time, maybe ten years or more, and coming back to that, with all the effects I've seen since then, it's a little hard to slip back into 1978 mode. And you're right about the wahoo and all of that. The kid's having fun. Superman is something of an innocent (his vocabulary, especially when he's Clark Kent, reflects that), so it's an appropriate expression for him. So I do look forward to seeing how your adjustments pan out, and I'm sure the edit will have a lot to enjoy in it.

I guess maybe my only thing is that little tiny scene where we see Clark from behind, from the middle of the back up, where we see his arms moving very slowly. If that scene were oversped a bit, it might help preserve the sensation of speed. As it is now, it kinda cuts into the pace...Clark running fast--hits the breaks, Clark pumping his arms slowly--then Clark running fast again. The shot just feels odd.

But other than that, methinks I need to shut my hole. I'm sure after watching this a couple times, the scene will feel right at home in the movie.

Hey, was just rewatching first Superman (for the first time in probably ten years or so), and there were a few things I noticed that kinda bothered me, that I hope you can remedy...if you haven't already dealt with them?

1) There's an inconsistency in how long it takes Superman to travel from Krypton to Earth. Jar-El says that he's been dead for thousands of years. But then Lex quotes the newspaper article that Lois Lane writes, saying that Superman says Krypton exploded in 1948, and that it took him 3 years to reach earth.

2) When the spaceship is traveling, and we hear little bits and pieces of Jar-El's lecturing, at one point he mentions Chinese writings...which wouldn't have existed at the time of Jar-El's death, if he died thousands of years ago.

3) When Superman is a boy and is running alongside the train, the running effect looks painfully hokey. Could this be cut?

4) The flying scene with Lois, where they fly by the WTC and the Statue of Liberty, then up through the clouds, is really, really long, and the whole "can you read my mind" monologue comes off as being...goofy. Could this be cut down to something more reasonable? Basically cut down the sight-seeing a bit, then where she falls, cut past a lot of "read my mind" bit, show a bit more flying, then go to him taking her back.

And just a crazy ass thought I had (and I know you won't touch this with a 20 foot pole, but just a brainfart I had):
I really, really hate the look of the dude they have playing Superman as a high school kid. It just feels weird, for whatever reason. He has no charisma whatsoever. Maybe it was the bit with him running alongside the train, but it just rubbed me the wrong way. The thing that occured to me is--this kid dresses exactly the same way as Tom Welling does in the Smallville series--flannel shirts, jeans, etc. He even wears his hair in a way that wouldn't be totally anachronistic to the time in which the movie takes place--if Clark arrived in Smallville at the age of about two in 1951, he would be in high school from about 1963 to 1967, so the long hair is appropriate.

So, to cut this short, do you at all like the idea of using Smallville footage, with Clark finding the spaceship, and going up north and throwing the crystal to create the Fortress of Solitude? I know this is outright heresy, but hell, I think Tom Welling looks more like Christopher Reeve than the actor playing him during the high school years in the movie.

Just curious what your thoughts were, but I'm sure you've already cut the hell out of the beginning, as it's so damn long. One thing I found interesting about the new movie--they really picked up on a TON of little details from the original movie, and the actors nailed the mannerisms of the original actors.

Something I happened to spot in the first movie--
Right after the missiles launch, and the order to abort is given, the guy pushing the button is played by an actor that goes on to play a certain alcoholic mailman on TV...

Sounds like you got a workprint. Do you still have it?

Considering that he says that he should capture it, I would say he does. It'd be interesting to see him release it, as somebody with some editing skills could probably take the movie and re-edit it to correspond with the workprint, borrowing chunks from the workprint, if necessary.

That is understood, but again, the question is, why? The movies were made to viewed back to back, and any attempt to actually join them together will introduce the problem of cramming the entire thing on one disc. So we're trading degraded video quality for...not having to take a minute to change DVDs? I like the idea, but it seems like its more trouble than its worth.

It looks interesting. How far along are you? What kind of running time are you looking at, and are you using any footage from the last two Supermans?

Also, keep in mind that the huge set with the Donner cut of Superman II will be released in November, so there might be useful footage off of that...but again, definitely sounds interesting.

Are you uploading stuff from your other computers? If you're taking up more than 90% of your total upstream bandwidth, you'll slow your download speed WAYYY down. So your network as a whole can upload 30 kB/s, than you can't upload at more than 27 kB/s (including all the computers in your network). And the official BT client ain't bad, but it's kinda outdated and a pain in the ass to deal with. But anyways, play with your bandwidth a bit and see what you come up with.

With the number of seeders on it...give it a little time, it should pick up. How much are you uploading? For public torrents, it's usually a good idea to allocate at least 20-30 kB/s for upload, as it takes quite a bit going upstream to get the downstream connection to work well. If you try and choke your uploading, you won't download jack. As far as clients, I only use utorrent or bitcomet, and those work nicely.

Wait wait wait...so all that work you did, aligning the full frame shots over the widescreen workprints...this VHS makes that all unneccessary...? Damn...but then again, realize that while the VHS footage is better than the workprint stuff, it isn't as good as the DVD footage you laid over the workprint...so how would you incorporate it? Would you redo the layering effect, or would you simply use the widescreen VHS, and accept the drop of quality in the center of the picture?

Mitch, thank you for getting the ball rolling on this. This is one of the few special cuts out there that I really, really want. And Rikter does a very nice job on his releases, so this little team should work nicely. Rikter, do you think this will get bumped up towards the top of your release ladder, or make it onto it at all? Defintely looking forward to this.
