The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
Woah woah woah, time out. Mitch, from what I've read, you've been having a hard time, but please realize that OCP has been having some rather crazy times, and just came off of a several day long ban. He didn't get vindicitive with you or anything, he just went with an understated reply. Maybe slightly snarkish, but not vindictive or anything.

I'm sorry things have been so crappy, but can't we all just be on happy hippie commune? Flower circles and all?

Very nice. I understand the interest in having several different audio tracks, but that gets rather inefficient after a while. And personally, when I watch a foreign film, I prefer to use subtitles. I've never been a big fan of dubbed audio.

And I get what he's doing with the timecodes. If the timecodes in several different subtitle tracks all line up, he doesn't even need to know the languages, as long as he knows what parts of the movie your edit uses. Nice work.

I've been lucky enough to receive support from several people who were in NYC when it occured. It's something I've worried about, because it seems that many people who were there consider this to be sort of a private matter for them, and anything that violates that privacy is seen as a personal violation. I saw interviews with a couple people that videotaped the attacks from just below the trade towers, and they said that they would never release the video, as it was a traumatic experience, etc etc.

I can't imagine what it must have been like to have been there, but my retort to that sort of thinking is, when its something of this large a scale, it can never be a private experience. The nation as a whole experienced it. To deny that experience to future generations is a huge mistake. Should we have burned the pictures of the internment camps in Germany, because of how horrible they were? Should Abraham Zapruder have let his film rot in a can, because of how traumatic it was for him to see his president die?

Like it or not, it's national and international history, and to hide that away is a mistake. So I really, really appreciate the interest and support. If anyone knows anybody with personal photographs or video of that day, please encourage them to release that stuff. It was a horrible day, but it happened, and that can't be changed. To hide it away in the dark would be a mistake.

Zombie84--It would be great if you could digitize that and send it my way. I've been offering to do transfers myself, but I would much rather have people do it for me. And again, if anybody has better footage in better quality than is available at Youtube, please send it my way. I am fortunate enough to have the first post-9/11 broadcast of the Daily Show, and Jon Stewart gave a hell of a speech at the beginning of that show. I'll definitely be including that in a future DVD.

The reason I didn't tape it that day. Kinda hard to think when something like that is going on.

zombie84--

Why would that be considered weird? Look at what I'm doing...and you say you have a tape that covers 3:30-6:30...what timezone are you going by? The recording I have covers from about 8:45 to almost 2 o'clock EST (5:45 - 11AM PST). If you're talking EST, that would be cool, as that extend the coverage of that day, without leaving too much of a hole between the two broadcasts (about 1 1/2 hours, 2-3:30 PM). And if you mean PST or one of the timezones in between, that's still cool, as there was still a lot of info coming out that evening.

Any way you could transfer that to some sort of digital video, or if not, copy it and send it to me? I could pay for shipping. Let me know.

DFNYC--

I'm sorry you had to go through all of that. Had to have been a stressful experience, to say the least.

The source video is, unfortunately, 320x240, which I'm converting to DVD-compliant low-res MPEG (352x240). It is, however, fairly clean, and the low resolution has the benefit of being able to fit in all onto one dvd without affecting the quality of the video.

As far as Letterman goes, the only source I've found of that is on Youtube, and the quality is pretty crappy. If anybody has a good recording of it, please let me know.

And DFNYC, do you know anybody that recorded the local newscasts that day, or that filmed any of it with their video camera? If so, please let me know.

suntech--What files do you have?

And to reiterate what I said before, I am not making any sort of political or opinionated documentary out of this stuff. I'm simply presenting it to the viewer, so that they can form their own opinions. That is my sole interest--to make the uninformed, informed.

Info & Help Wanted: for a 9/11 News Footage Preservation Project...
Time

Many of you may not be aware that uncut newcasts from the day of 9/11 have never been made publicly available. However, some time ago on the internet, I found about 5 hours of ABC news footage from 9/11, starting right before the first attack (some of you may have copies of these files). The video was originally encoded in Realmedia (blech), and later re-encoded to divx. Interestingly, it’s not an amateur recording of the news, but rather, from an original archival copy from a tv station in the midwest (can’t recall exactly where off the top of my head). Anyways, I reencoded the video the DVD-compliant MPEG, while making some color corrections to the video, as it was rather washed out. This I transferred to DVD, and made menus and whatnot for it.

However, there were still a couple issues with the video that I didn’t like, so I’m going to go back and rework the video a bit, and do a new DVD transfer. What I’m wondering is, would anyone be interested in a public release of this (via Demonoid or something like that)?

The other question is, does anybody out there have copies of newcasts from other national networks, from local stations based in NYC, or amateur footage of any of the attacks? If anybody couple provide me with copies of any of the above, I would like to transfer them to DVD and release them in subsequent editions.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist, and I have no interest in venting my opinions on the matter, or using footage of the attacks to create any sort of documentary, opinionated or otherwise. I simply think that any recorded evidence of an event of this magnitude should be made available to the public, so that they can make a more informed opinion. If you’d like to contact me privately, send me a PM, or email me at tweaker (at) gmail.com

You realize you're adding on quite a bit of baggage for each language track you add, right? I forget exactly how long your edit is, but I think it's around 90 minutes. A stereo dolby track (AC-3) running 90 minutes with a bitrate of 192 kbps is about 126 megabytes in size. With the four language tracks you have, you have 500 MB worth of audio as it is.

Why not cut the less common audio tracks (HUN & CZE), and instead use foreign language subtitle tracks? You could add in 20 different languages if you wanted, and it would take very little room, compared to using all those audio tracks.

Proposed project: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV show)

I think he's saying that it would just look more movie-like. However, I did hear that because the shots weren't meant to be framed as widescreen, that there are instances where recording equipment appear on the screen. The shows were meant to be 4:3, so stick with that.

As far as the credits...not much you can do, so just deal with it. I think zooming in would create so much artifacting, by blowing up such a small part of the screen, that it would be just as distracting as having credits appear.

The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)

Does it feel strange that you announced this back in early January, and now you're finally coming to the end of this little journey, after having met Alex Williams and others that have worked on this, and after you've interviewed even more of the movers and shakers of this little film?

Any plans for another project, or have you decided to take a break and try and get all the less-fun, personal stuff sorted out, and get away from the computer for a while?

Holy....shit. Good lord man, now I know where all that money went:

Crank. Lots and lots of it.

That is some truly ungodly work you did. The color adjustments you did on the edges of the pan-and-scan DVD did absolute wonders for the P&S over widescreen shots. That's absolutely beautiful Garrett. I had no idea how insane this was going to get. Nice.

But one thing I just noticed--in that last corrected shot of Zigzag with the lackeys, why is his cloak green on the right and bottom sides? In the other corrected shot, the color is consistent. Odd.

But again...wow. I'm really impressed with how improved the witch scenes are. They were a real mess, and only having the P&S and workprint to work with didn't help. Get some sleep man. I would send you money, but I'm down to cashing in my change to buy fucking gas. God, I hate being broke. Haven't been this destitute since I was 16 (five years ago). Cannot...wait...till...summer.

Very excited about this final cut, and I'm glad to hear about the improvement in sound quality. Once concern I had about the Rough Cut was that while the sound was good, there was also some sort of electronic distortion sort of below the sound for much the film. Was this a problem with the source, or was it a biproduct of trying to clean it up?

Help: looking for... 'The Cure for Insomnia' movie
Time
Hmm...I'll have to check it out when I have time.

You know, just a thought:

It appears that with Gods, you have a really have a complex story to tell, one that just might be too much to tell in a traditional movie format. You mention there being a television version, why not take a shot at doing a complete edit that way? I mean, obviously it's not going to pop up on NBC next week, but it would be sort of an interesting experimental approach. It sounds like you have 3 1/2 hours of material that you wanted to use in the movie, so maybe you have a total of around 4 hours of usable material to work with? So why not take the material and re-edit it into a serial of sorts, with about ten 25 minute episodes, or 5 or so 45 minute episodes? There are several online video streaming places now, such as that GBS.tv place that showed the rough cut of Cobbler. Why not shop it out to GBS and places like that? Run it over the course of a month or two as a serial drama or whatever the hell it is.

I did a bit of research to see what you were talking about:

Gods of LA: 2 hours 20 minutes

The Animal Game: 5 hours, then 3 1/2 hours, and then down to 2 1/2 hours.

Sweet Jesus, Garrett. You have to learn to let go man. Having done a fair amount of writing, I know how heart-wrenching it is to make cuts when you like all of the material, but you gotta make some cuts, as people just don't have an attention span that long, especially for dramas. Also, they just take too long to shoot. ("Gods" took, what, three years?)

You do great work man, but Richard Williams is not an ideal role model for success.

Ogg--It was released in widescreen. Problem is, it was one of the bastardized cut, and there are scenes released in full-frame that aren't in the WS version (if I remember correctly).

And OCP, I forgot about the mac thing. Try Tomato Torrent:
http://sarwat.net/bittorrent/

Also, Azureus has been released for OSX:
