STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW

Forgive me if this has been answered before, but will ESB:R have a track with pop-up changes like the ANH:R DVD? I found this useful, especially when showing it to my kids.

Not sure how easy it is to do on a Blu-Ray or media file, but I imagine it could be done as just a subtitle track if nothing else works.

The Death Star graphics though is something I’m worried about. It was a simple mistake in the original. Rogue One using the same graphics was their way of fixing the mistake - same as adywan in ANHR - by making it seem like it was intentional. But it still makes little sense, and requires a bullshit explanation outside of the film to explain why it’s that way (the hard drive has every version of the plans I guess?). Even with that silly explanation, it doesn’t make any sense at all for the Rebels to be using and showing out of date plans when they’re planning their attack. I think you can still keep continuity with RO and still fix the plans (in RO we see early versions of the plans and in ANH we see the current plans). To use the old graphics for the briefing scene is a huge misstep, I think.

^^ This.

The updated graphic in the briefing room looks immensely better than the cheesy 70’s original, and much better illustrates the Rebels attack plan.

However, I have an idea for mostly keeping both.

If the graphic seen in Rogue One can be considered a “thumbnail” image and the ANH graphics the actual technical readouts, the two could be reconciled by just moving the firing dish above the equator in the Rogue One graphic. The graphics in ANH could be recoloured back to blue to keep the association with the Rogue One plans, while distancing them a bit from the (I assume preliminary) plans received on Geonosis in AOTC.

I loved the movie, just loved it. One thing I might change is the dialogue between the director and Vader on Mustafar. I would simply cut vader’s line about chocking on one’s ambitions, (he’s a sith for Chrissakes! Ambition is all he knows.)

I hated that line because Darth Vader does not use one-liners. But I don’t understand your point about him being a Sith.

And I hate the idea of putting anything more from ROTS in.

“I find your lack of faith disturbing.”

I was more bothered by his walk down the ramp towards the Director. Looked like he was struggling in high heels.

trimboNZ, not sure why you seem to think the original Vader figure which turns to walk towards us doesn’t look good, as it certainly looks absolutely fine to me - in fact, everything about that whole shot has never looked better than it does now, I’d say.

The point was really just that the new shot is so much better. I agree that the shot with Vader walking towards us has never looked better than it does now.

When I first watched the new clip, without the comparison video, I thought the third unit shot was not very well done - the motion and compositing looked unnatural and it didn’t look very detailed, as if it was out of focus.

It was only when seeing it alongside the original that I realized I had the wrong shot! The footage I had been looking at, of Vader walking away from the window and towards the camera was original footage and I suspect not much can be done for that without a complete re-shoot.

The actual third unit shot of Vader walking towards the bridge window was filmed and inserted so perfectly that I didn’t notice it was new.

Bravo!

Wonderful clip, amazing how much better it looks.

Going way back to the Hoth battle, has the blast mark that suddenly appears on the AT-AT during Luke’s first attack run been fixed? Here’s two consecutive frames showing what I mean:

A very small detail, but it stands out more when in motion and once you know it’s there you’ll see it every time, like the elephant trunk in ANH.

In Star Wars, we had a set up of how important the Death Star was – the stolen plans, the destruction of Alderaan – and the political state of the galaxy – Obi Wan talking about the destruction of the Jedi and the Imperial officers on the Death Star discussing the disbanding of the Imperial Senate. In contrast, the Starkiller base was just there – there was no sense that the Resistance was trying to find it. You cared about the destruction of Alderaan because it was Leia’s home planet. Why should we care about the never-before-mentioned Hosnian system? (And how did they see the destruction from Maz’s castle?)

That shot with the planets destruction being visible from Maz’s castle established beyond any reasonable doubt that Takodana is in the Hosnian system.

I just found the line they used to have Alec Guinness say Rey’s name

“Come here, little one! Don’t be afREYd.”

[And here it is in TFA @57]LINK REMOVED

I find it so amusing how they pulled this off. It’s such a fanedit-y thing to do.

Or perhaps it’s the other way around. My cynical side postulates that the name “Rey” was chosen specifically to match sounds uttered by Guinness.

Ady: have you ever considered filming yourself as you work (ie a camera looking over your shoulder) and either selling or posting the clips as a teaching tool on how to edit?

Perhaps do live Twitch streaming, this would also be a way to raise funds through subscriptions/ donations.

Oh, this is a GREAT idea. I would absolutely subscribe to this to support adywan at least a little bit.

That tingles all kind of nerd nerves... :p

I don't know if Ady is like this too, but I would be extremely uncomfortable with a camera or person watching over my shoulder while I work. Especially if I knew it was going to elicit a number of, erm, helpful suggestions about my workflow.

That asteroid field clip is amazing. The canyon blends in beautifully, and the new explosions are excellent. I especially like the two small asteroids that obliterate each other in front of the window are now much better than the unconvincing "comet" we had before.

One thing that has always slightly bothered me about this sequence is this:

As they approach the Big One, it looks from the cockpit's point of view as if it is either approaching incredibly rapidly or is much smaller than it should be. Should this be fixed?

One idea could be to just slow down the apparent approach speed in that one cockpit shot. This would make it look much more massive, but could possibly lead to a continuity problem with the next external shot that shows the Falcon right above the surface. Thoughts?

A similar scale problem was seen in ANH when the Falcon first approached the Death Star, as it moved against the starfield making it look much smaller due to parallax.

Oh and in the Carbon chamber, Vader stopped Boba shooting Chewie because he still had Threepio strapped to his back :P

Either could work, but "Ready" would be better IMO. I know we're not shaping the OT to the prequels, but "Ready my shuttle" ties in nicely with Amidala's command in TPM, "Ready my ship".

"Bring my ship" as it stands is already fine, if the shuttle could be painted out.

Unless someone transfers these edits and preservations to a more reliable medium, they will all be wiped with the next major solar flare event.

Which is overdue.

So the only Star Wars anyone will see in 2113 will be faded film stock (probably 1997SE) and most of the prequels and all of the ST will be lost forever.

M-disc backups are susceptible to solar flares? o_O

Thank you Adywan for that amazing clip. The colour and compositions look incredible and, as always, with all the changes it still "feels" like how Star Wars should.

A few points that stood out:

The binocular POV shot looks fantastic. I really like the visible people in the AT-AT cockpit - it gives a great impression of the rebel commander staring into the face of his enemy (perhaps General Veers in this case) before the attack.

The AT-STs were a genuine surprise, and a big THANK YOU for leaving them in. The apparent decision to remove them was my biggest objection to all the ESB:R changes.

The first shot of the walkers looks nicer than before, but now shows them quite a bit more defined as opposed to specks on the horizon. This to me slightly diminishes the impact of the subsequent binocular view, which previously served as a reveal. Were they brought closer for continuity reasons?

As others have pointed out, the blast marks on the second AT-AT can still be seen appearing out of nowhere at 1:33

The saturated red lights that people have complained about are IMO a good thing. Part of the visual theme of Star Wars is that most shots have a prominent coloured light somewhere, whether on a droid, a wall panel or a laser blast, etc, which gives a sense of the pervasiveness of technology everywhere in this universe.

Not like the A-Wing pilot in the Death Star tunnels in Jedi, who sounds like he is reading lines waved in front of his face for a the price of a cup of tea.

Do you mean the line, "Copy, Gold Leader", in response to Lando's order to head back to the surface?

Funny, I've never had a problem with that line, but my view was always that it was a somewhat incredulous and disapointed tone, while trying to keep the response professional. I figure he'd wanted to stick around inside the DS and defend the Falcon, or perhaps just didn't like the idea of being bait for TIE fighters...

Anyway, back to ESB - I also thought the line about Star Destroyers was fine.

Great to see the progress on this edit. Thank you Adywan for demonstrating that these movies can be made better with dedication and real talent. Exciting that it looks to be on the home stretch as it were.

While we're on the topic of sound, two audio effects in ESB stand out to me as having room for improvement. I have no idea if these are to be fixed or even if they should be tampered with all but here goes:

1. When Leia is helping repair the Falcon and repeatedly tries to rotate a handle, the sound is something like two plastic blocks knocking together. This doesn't seem consistent with whatever she's trying to do (as in it sounds like no amount of force will move it).

2. Artoo on Dagobah makes the same sounds he makes when he gets shot by Jawas in ANH, right down to the mournful whine he makes when falling over. Perhaps a bit more variety could be added. I realise this may not be desirable as it may mess with fond memories, etc.

Ady has started making the new Han in Carbonite cast to fix the shirt-change continuity error.

This sort of thing is what I really like about these Revisited edits: the amazing dedication and attention to detail.

Recently I sat down with my seven year old son and introduced him to Star Wars. ANH seemed the right place to start and as for which version, well there was no contest.

My next dilemma is whether to wait for this edit to be completed before showing him ESB.

Most people don't know this but the 1080i signal is actually a 1920x540 resolution signal where every other frame (actually called a field) is interlaced with the frame after it, giving you a perceived total resolution of 1920x1080

No, it gives you a perceived resolution of about 1920x756, if you're talking about truly interlaced material. For progressive material you get a perceived and actual resolution of 1920x1080 (barring some minor differences in how colour is processed).

Hi Darth,

For truly interlaced material you are correct that it is impossible to get full-resolution progressive scan content, since each field (even or odd lines) represents an advancement in time of 1/50 sec (for PAL). Motion is the killer here - a fast-moving ball for example will appear in one position for the odd lines and another for the even lines, making a full frame (both fields displayed at once) look wrong. I'll take your word about the 756 lines, I assume that's something to do with a best-case deinterlacer?

Anyway this is not relevant to the 1080i Star Wars broadcast, as it was never truly interlaced - the film was of course captured at 24fps and sped up for PAL regions to 25fps. The fact that is has been broken up into odd and even fields for broadcast has no effect on the ability to get a 1080p rip since the even and odd fields for any given frame will both be in exactly the same time domain (all motion is restricted to 1/25sec chunks).

Venturing further OT, but I actually prefer watching content at higher frame rates but unfortunately it has become associated with low-budget soap operas with 50/60fps cameras and shaky operators so most folks seem to prefer the other-worldliness qualities of 24fps.

All PAL releases have been sped up from 24 fps to 25 fps because PAL is 25 fps. Maybe that is what the chart is referring to... I dunno.

That 25fps problem is one reason I would like to see Star Wars on Blu Ray - the sound is also sped up so all the music is off key, as well as the voices being slightly higher. I actually watched SW:R in NTSC for this very reason (but quickly went back to the PAL version when my eyes started to bleed).
