Help: looking for... 'Dead Poets Society' - preservation of the US laserdisc version?
Time

for those interested I just bought the extended version with shipping off ebay for under 10$

there was another one up as well for $9.99, most sellers do not list it as extended, so do a search for "dead poet society laserdisc" and look at the covers. You can tell because the extended version has a red triangle in the top right stating that it is extended

Apocalypse Now - Workprint (now available) (Released)
Time

I am wondering about your SubCin version and this is why: A number of years ago when VHS was still prevalent with trading, I had received the AN workprint from a good trader friend of mine who had a million connections. The quality on this 2 vhs set was pretty nice and went further to tell me it was like 1-2 generations down from the source who leaked the workprint to begin with

fast forward a few years-- I made a nice 3 disc dvd set out of that workprint. I also gave it 2 audio tracks since the WP audio was always a little muffled. The second audio track kind of cleaned that up a bit. I never circulated this online (torrents, RS, etc) but it did go out a few times to various traders who wanted it.

Just wondering if this SubCin version is really the edition I had made a number of years ago?

Either way if you need it, shoot me a PM

Info Wanted: Godzilla Series ~API English~ Any Preservations?
Time

if it helps with your project:

Godzilla vs mecha godzilla (1970s)

Terror of Mechagodzilla

and Godzilla vs megalon

all have the same english dub so do not bother with those

the media blasters DAM disc as mentioned has the aip dub, but a nice fan disc that was organized a number of years back via newsgroups had a sound editor using various tv broadcast and such to reconstruct and clean the aip dub. This was then made to fit the then ADV destroy all monsters disc.

I took it a step further and then made that audio fit the fareast flix destroy all monsters disc. They ripped the region 2 dvds and then added in removable english subtitles. I then added in the aip dub to that

Also most seem to forget that the DAM AIP version actually had a short end credit sequence. I have been meaning to up that to youtube since I recorded DAM off the tv twice back in the 80's and between the two could get the complete sequence

It's a shame that some uploaders feel they have to butcher the discs before sharing. Where did you download this version from?

As I said above, the full disc is available at myspleen.cc. If you need an invite, register on their forums and beg for one.

It is not so much from an uploader purposely butchering the disc, but more so from idiots who have no idea nor knowledge that a dvd may contain extra rom material. So when these people make a copy of their disc to upload, many just rip the dvd as usual without copying over the extra content or even knowing it was there to begin with, because they do not bother to check these things

PS: though I really do not recommend the site anymore, the uploaded one on linktalk (non torrent) had the massive rom extra material

sorry for the late reply.

Your last clip was the best looking of the bunch. It still had some noise, but it was very minimal and nothing that stood out like before (no invisible worms). Raising the noise filter higher might start taking away detail. The level you have it now set to looks fine.

If you added no noise filter and just re-did the brightness and contrast on your original HD clip, then going to the avchd route was actually adding in more artifacts than before.

Either way, best clip yet--proceed forward

this clip looks much better and you can see the image is now brought "more to life". However this also exposes the amount of artifact noise present.

I was really able to see this on the ferns in the beginning and the over head dock shot that I thought was possibly water on the dock was actually noise. The side shot of Binx and Billie lying sideways on the dock are both covered with noise that looks more like invisible worms

I do get HD stuff not being broadcast well or with limits (my IFC channel looks like downloaded block ridden divx crap), but if you ran a noise filter on it this might help it out quite a bit, though you may loose a little bit of the sharpness detail

I would still be interested in the hd2dvd (previous or newer edition) however

No. I took a snapshot but the same rules would apply. I never use avisynth (unless it is part of a program like favc or dvdrebuilder). In your clip's case I would have to reconvert it to an avi or mpeg2 first and then apply the color settings while encoding (tmpg 2.56) it once more

I used the snapshot for an example

I am not sure what programs you have and what you are using and what format your clip was before avchd.

I know enough scripts exist for avisynth that one must let you tinker with the simple saturation, brightness and contrast. Though I am not sure if it would show you  examples of your settings before encoding (gui maybe?)

All that really needs to be done is some minor boost in saturation and leveling out (adjusting) with the brightness and contrast. The pic below shows a comparision of the levels adjusted with your original on the bottom

in all honestly your original is still fine by me, and I do want to work out something to get a hold of your hd2dvd edition (send me a PM), but for the higher up format you are going for and to make it look as good as possible you would need to re-encode the clip with the color adjustments before converting to an AVCHD

Billie Jean looked decent.

I saw some very minor artifacts during the first shot with the plants in front of the water. Also it looked like some kind of noise was going on in the overhead shot when Binx and Billie are laying on the dock. I could not tell if it was water on the dock or if they dock had noise present (using a pc to view)?

Movement seemed fine, the colors were a little dull but not terrible

other than that in overall quality it at least looks better than our old vhs prints. The source that was used originally probably was not remastered before airing. Regardless would love to get a hold of it in whatever format once it is done

I STILL can't make up my darn mind on which to do next LOL,I am leaning towards Sheena, but The Legend of Billie Jean would also be a damn good AVCHD DVD as well.

also just got the Discs from The Griff Saturday so Thanks a bunch Griff, you are 1 helluva a friend,so E.T. might be a good one to.

So is the version of ET you sent 720p or the Original Theatrical version in 1080i?

Considering Bille Jean still has no proper release of any kind and the fact that the movie has always rocked (with a huge following), it would make an excellent choice to go with next----

The Puppets or cgi?
Time

You do have a point. Lord of the rings is a good example and was done very well, especially with making you feel for the cgi and other non human characters.

This would also explain why you have perhaps as hands worth of fan edits for the original trilogy and about 4 million for the last 3

Well using real muppets might have helped a little in making them (the films) more tolerable

so really my complaint boils down to Lucas not knowing what the hell he was doing or just exposing what a crap director he turned into

The Puppets or cgi?
Time

I did a search but I did not see what I was looking for, though I am sure this was brought up at some point or another on these forums.

I still hold a special spot in my heart for the first three produced films. I really did not care for any of the three later produced films and felt no emotion at all when viewing them in the theater/home.

I believe what really killed the later three and what still makes the first 3 so well loved by all are characters/creatures and what methods were employed to bring them to life. The puppets (or Muppets since Henson's workshop was involved) had to have life brought into them by the operator(s) to make them even remotely passable on the screen. This of course was done exceptionally well and you really felt something for quite a few of the "fake" characters.

Likewise viewing computer generated everything with the last three, I think it killed the heart and soul of what helped make the first films so damn special to us. Sure visually you have something amazing, but it had no heart, no life put into these characters later on to make them truly a somebody you could care about. You had to rely on computers to bring any sort of emotion to the screen and in doing so it just failed miserably in my eyes

Am I the only one who thinks this way or does anyone else believe that even if you had cgi for towns, planets and vehicles, the non human characters should have been utilized using puppets and not cgi. I think it would have added a certain charm back into the films (and perhaps some soul) because the later three desperately needed it.

It should be pretty easy to make a pair. All you need is a cheap pair of sunglasses (dollar store), and some blue and red plastic wrap, or some clear plastic wrap and a blue and red marker. Pop out the lenses and put the plastic wrap over the holes. Might look a bit ghetto, but I think it should work.

Actually, you could probably just take the back of a plastic CD case, or any other clear pice of plastic and color a section blue and a section red and look through that. Be kind of weird, but also quick and easy.

hahahahaa, or you can just pay like $1-14 to get like 12-20 pairs of them off ebay

I'm surprised not more people have commented here.  I would, but I have no glasses.

And that is more or less why no one has replied. Not many people own the blue/red glasses.

I put quite a bit of work into these clips (though they are still a little rough). I just did not use a convert to 3d app, but used masking, cutting (crude rotoscoping to some degree) and a few video layers to pull these off. This is the only way to get a true multi layer look and convert a 2d film (or image) into 3d for material that only exist in a 2d format beforehand

below is a picture I converted over from 2d to 3d using some of the methods I had applied to the video editions to give you an idea (then again if you do not have glasses I guess it defeats the purpose)

The Evil Dead Treasures Collection (Released)

Joinus,

the url does work with keepvid as I tested it for you, but instead I used orbit downloader to snag it.

I did not aquire the Evil Dead 2 , two disc edition yet (I just got a hold of the 7 gig disc 3 for evil dead). So I am not sure if the workprint version I have is the same that appears on this disc? I still have to dig that out and I have to get a hold of the first 2 dvds for this treasure collection (I can do that via LT and within the next few minutes)
