Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1

I'm super looking forward to this edition of Jedi. It's my favourite of the original trilogy and the one that suffered the most from its alterations.

Liking Jedi more than SW or Empire is something you should discuss with your psychologist, but I was under the impression that Jedi was the *least* butchered by the SE treatment.

As far as the SE goes, I think its changes are the worst. It probably got far *fewer* changes compared to ANH, because the effects shots held up a bit better. But, while ANH Jabba was more like a shitty deleted scene reinstated, "Jedi Rocks" was a new level of in-your-face terribleness. And the Sarlacc beak is nearly as bad.

But after adding Hayden , "Wesa free!", and "Nooo", I think it quite easily qualifies for worst changes. I think Empire easily got the best end of the SE stick, regardless.

And as far as a favorite goes, I of course recognize the other two as better films. But I grew up re-watching Jedi much, much more, because I think we got that VHS before the other two. So it's got an extra helping of nostalgia for me.

Just wanted to add that I also love the unabashedly un-pc tack they've taken in eschewing the mealy mouthed vaguery currently in vogue by announcing the film will be released not "This Holiday Season," but rather "This Christmas," just how the first film would have been advertised if it had met its original release date in December 1976. But then, I love pretty much any show of defiance against 21st Century America's despicable repudiation of Christmas as a cultural touchstone.

Great point. And I could not agree with you more. I'm surprised I didn't even think about this when seeing it the first time. Love it.

I hope they go one further and give Jesus a god damn cameo. They'll probably just try to be all PC and make it Life Day, again.

Fact: The Star Wars Holiday Special first aired on November 17, 1978. It was, at best, a Thanksgiving event, although it aired the weekend *before* the holiday.

Anyway, you're wrong in thinking that no one says movies are coming out on Christmas because of PC culture or whatever.

2014: The InterviewUnbroken

ALSO, now that I'm spending so much time writing this post, where the heck did you see "Christmas"? The trailer says "December"

In case it wasn't obvious, I was just pointing out how god damned absurd the alleged War On Christmas is. Started to feel like I was on the O'Reily Factor forums over here.

Star Wars GOUT in HD using super resolution algorithm (* unfinished project *)

@ Laserdisc Man

You accidentally compared your upscale to the Avisynth Spline64Resize, not to the super resolution v4. Here the correct comparison:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/122307

As before your upscale is cleaner with less noise, but mine contains more texture and detail. Interesting comparison!

Thanks for getting the correct comparison. Thought I was going crazy before. :P

Yours does have a bit more detail. I guess it's just a question of where the tradeoff should be. The chinstrap looks so much nicer in LM's, for instance, as that double halo artifact on the chin is pretty bad. The eyes, though have a hint more detail in yours.

Throwing my hat into the ring here; I'm upset that I, II, III, V, and VI are missing the Fox logo and fanfare as much as you are.

Sure those films are solely Lucasfilm and they made them and Fox simply distributed them, but to me, they're still Fox films.

I suggest we contact Disney tomorrow and ask them nicely to right this wrong.

Ah, this makes sense. Lends credence to the idea that Fox retained some rights related to 1977 Star Wars.

 So does this: http://www.disneystudioshelp.com/detail_STARWARSIV__SUPPORT.html

I get that nerds are obsessed with order and consistency and such, but the idea that Disney would make a deal to put the 20th Century Fox logo and fanfare in front of their new prized possessions is one of the more ridiculous instances of wishful thinking I've seen.

Completely agree (regarding TFA).

I can be a nerd for consistency too, but the idea of giving recognition to Fox directly before the film, a film that they had absolutely nothing to do with, is madness.

It's the last bit of the ESB end credits. Perhaps this is a temp until Episode 7 is out?

In any case, I'm not too surprised Disney pulled this. When they briefly held the home video rights to Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal in the mid 90's, they not only chopped out the Universal Studios logo, but the opening seconds of Trevor Jones' score as well! Glad they never got their mitts on it again.

Probably temporary. It's just a digital release so they're probably not too concerned about its permanent effect (they could even update the video streams later).

I know some fans really want to see the Fox fanfare in Episode VII. As much as we like to obsess over consistency, etc, this is obviously out of the question. Hopefully they'll come up with something that's not too distracting/awful.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

DominicCobb said:

New SE is a very bad thing unless the OOT comes along with it. And I feel like it won't. If what these people are saying is true and there is a new 4K master with some new changes including a new color timing, I have an itching feeling they're talking about the Reliance master (and, by the way, the colors are very effed in that just in different ways than the blu-ray). And since we've already heard about that, but we've heard jack shit about the OOT, I think it's safe to say that the OOT will not likely come with a new SE if that happens.

We haven't heard jack shit confirmed for OOT *or* new SE aside from one guy who believed that Han shoots "first" in some mystery version a mystery friend of his watched.

I don't believe they will, unless one of us does it, and makes them an offer they can't refuse. They'll probably refuse anyway.  That's certainly my goal, and it's nice to think positive.  But if I thought Star Wars was in better hands, I wouldn't be here.  MAYBE the Reliance clips are not actually the new restoration for any number of reasons we can think up to make ourselves feel better, yeah.  MAYBE.  MAYBE it'll rain beer.  You know, you never know. In the meantime, there is nothing to do but head down and show them how to do it right.

At this point, I don't even know what I'm hoping for anymore.

If there's even a slim chance that they would ever consider working with you in the future, Mike, I hope the RM version is SE. If they've already completed a botched OOT, they're not going to do it again with your help, regardless of all you have to offer.

But if there's exactly a zero percent chance of them taking an interest in your work, I would still hope for the botched RM OOT. It's better than nothing, and at least it can be broken down to scrap for use in Harmy type projects.

Correction to what I said earlier: Apparently there were no tweaks made for this release. Content-wise it's 100% identical to the blu-rays, unless someone notices otherwise.

Devin's sources thought they were looking at the version for this digital release. What they were actually looking at was the 4k version we've been talking about since July in that other thread. That version does contain tweaks, and Han shoots first.

Personally, I find it more likely that his sources didn't see anything. High level access to something that is tightly under wraps that they managed to view in its entirety without knowing what they were watching?

And his update is just him rationalizing that it must have been the 4K if it wasn't Tomorrow's. He's not even claiming that the source seeked out further info. Hell, maybe they watched KK650's hybrid cut with altered color timing.

I think people probably don't care for it because you're not participating in actual conversation or anything productive. You're only venting repeatedly about the same things in an overly emotional way. Though I guess if there's a place online to do so, it's here. Even so, you're preaching to the choir. The fact that you've managed to bother even the most concentrated group of people online with similar thoughts is somewhat telling.

Everyone knows what a troll is. They're not always straight forward to diagnose, though. Sometimes (and not necessarily referring to you), people's online behavior seems so strange that you can't fathom that someone would actually write in such a way other than for the purpose of winding people up.

There are no CRT anymore. Same with mobile phones. Can't even buy one with classic keypads. Because business takes away all freedom. And tags it freedom, individuality and personality.

Business takes away what doesn't make money.  They don't do it just to annoy you.

Not annoy, neccessarily. They do it to take away your freedom. They're as guilty as every person who lived before CRT TVs and T9 phones and therefore didn't sell those things. All those dudes hated freedom, too.

You don't need any invite to myspleen get the torrent. It has spread to other open torrent sites. Not sure if I am allowed to post the link here. However the torrent's hash is 756A3641E063D773ADFF18BFC73E0901FA14C24F and if you google that you will find it.

PS I was led here by an article in The Guardian, so you'll no doubt get some attention from that!

http://www.theguardian.com/film/filmblog/2015/apr/07/star-wars-has-gone-digital-but-how-should-you-actually-watch-it

It really is nice to have it proven possible that someone who just registered today can google and find a torrent for this.

It seems like it should be straight forward. But the constant bombardment of requests has me doubting it sometimes.

Welcome!
