What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like?
Time

If you like the effects in the 2011 version, you are a fan of 1997 effects, a 1999 jabba, and a 2011 dug thing

Edit: as well as perhaps a 2011 flashy carbonite effect, Ewok eyes, and a door. Lot's of modern effects to get excited about! I think they should have held off on the blu-ray until 2014. So much more could be done with doors now that technology has evolved even further.

More OUT Rerelease Rumors from John Landis!

It's either that or tinker with the films themselves and I doubt they'd risk that as that would set off a firestorm with the TFNers and their worship of Lucas' "original vision."

I really enjoyed the day they found out Lucas's story treatment wouldn't be used for the ST.

but why spend the tons of money and time on a restoration of a version with a tiny existing interested group of purchasers when the existing versions, for which they already have HD masters, are selling like heroine?

If they ever want to release in 4K (and not just an upscale), they'll need to either release the 1997 version as-is, or spend money modifying them in some way. That could mean re-building something that resembles the 2011, the OOT, or both.

I think ANH might be the least-messed with since 1997.

Well, perhaps that's because it was by far the most messed with in 1997.

My answer for 'which ones would be watchable if the OOT wasn't suppressed' would be ESB. I think the Boba Fett voice change is a bit disrespectful, but I don't really care enough about Fett for it to bother me. Most of the effects shots are just recomposited from the same elements and look pretty nice.

RoTJ has perhaps a small number of offensive changes. But they're huge ones. Even in 1997, Jedi Rocks and the Sarlacc were enough to really throw it off. Fortunately, it's fairly smooth sailing for a huge stretch of the film.

ANH is just screwed with from top to bottom. Terrible CGI creatures and droids at every turn. Far more replaced effects and paintings rather than recomposited ones. Least consistent color timing of the three. They've really succeeded in making it permanently look like a film that was slapped together in 1997.

Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released!

Heh, I don't know if I'd go that far, but it looks kind of back to square one to me as far as being green and blown out.

And poita of course makes some great points. It's ambitious to try to approach the film colorization with an objectively correct goal in mind. But if that's actually impossible, attempts are going to need a personal touch. I think Mike Verta has said similarly, and has certainly made judgement calls in his own restoration.

As fun as it is to discuss these things, I must admit I'll have a relatively large margin of what is acceptable color-wise. It will be great to have any and all projects that simply don't look 'screwed up' the way the film has since 2004. In truth, if Disney actually put out an OOT that had the approximate color of the 1997 film, I would be thrilled. Of course, I would also want to see what the people here end up doing with it next. :)

Info: In search of the correct colors for ANH...

Subjective indeed. You must do what you think is right. Though if your work has made the blu-ray look like the IB prints, it will probably be popular here. Can you produce an LUT or is it too shot specific?

As for basing it on props and set photos, I'm sure that will give you a nice realistic color that looks much better than the Blu. But doing this alone will of course ignore any original color grading. For instance, the R2 Jawa scene would end up being in daylight as some LD releases looked.

team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)

Moving to 4k takes up too many resources with little to no discernible improvements, along with the issue of a tiny number of people that can utilize the format properly.

In addition to this, I would also suggest that it might be a bad idea for the first release of any 4K version of SW to be an unofficial preservation. We are fortunate enough to be on Disney's good side (or at least their not-so-bad side). Despite the limitations of a homemade scan of a release print vs an official 4K scan of the negatives, I just don't think it would be a good idea to beat them to the punch with a 4K release. OOT or otherwise. Especially not before they've made it clear whether or not they're going to actually make an OOT release.

If I'm not wrokg I read somewhere they started from 4K negative scans, Am I wrong?

I think everyone reading is on board with you. But TN1 makes it quite clear each time this comes up that it will never happen. Not even a 50GB 1080p.

Not sure why, but it seems they've made their choice. As for 4K, I don't know if they're actually doing the restorations themselves at 4K.

Can't Extract Hal 9000"s Star Wars Episode I: Cloak Of Deception on Jdownloader
Time

This might be a stupid question, but is there a password and if so do you know what it is?

If the files downloaded, you don't need to be dealing with this in jdownloader anymore. Just go to the folder that it downloaded to and try to open with winrar and obviously change the file extension back if you messed it up.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

I'm avoiding TFA spoilers, but saw a headline about Mark Hamill filming for Episode VIII. I'm glad that Luke will evidently survive the new movie and go on to appear in at least one more. This is good news, though I would've preferred to not even know that.

This is probably one of the reasons that reports were so ambiguous or contradictory regarding whether they were filming VII or VIII on that island.

Reports confirm it's 7? "OMG they're still filming so last minute this movie is obviously going to flop." Confirm it's 8? "OMG Luke is alive but his beard didn't survive VII."

Star Wars Episode III: Labyrinth Of Evil (Released)

The japanese dub look like it was online as of last year but can't find a current link.

edit: Not that I'd have posted a link if I found one. But it sounds like this kind of discussion is not allowed anyway? Is it within the spirit of the rules to use a downloaded dub for a couple seconds of audio if you own the blu-ray in your own region? Is the spirit of the rules different if you download a japanese guy's rip from last year (and discussed it, without sharing a link) vs. being sent the file from a fellow forum member?
