Info Wanted: The Legality of Fan Projects
Time
Okay...

I'm getting a bit tired of this routine here...I've been looking for a top notch video editor to put video to this project for over a year now. I've had three video editors enthusiastically join the project...and all three have backed out. Only one has given me the courtesy of letting me know why they have quit the project, and that was fear of reprisals from LFL.

So if anyone gives a rat's ass about the video project for SYMPHONY FOR A SAGA, please let me know. I've said it before...I'd do it myself if I had the know how or time. If someone can rip DVDs and center channel FX, I could probably assemble it myself in Final Cut or something...

So...if anyone is interested, PM me.

Thanks all....this seems to have turned to a really good discussion.

I'm all for it....its just up to my editors to feel comfortable.

I'm LDS (Mormon), so I am familiar with CleanFlicks, though I don't and have never used them. There is a big demand for that type of thing, especially since every movie now has to have some amount of sex or boobies in it. Its really starting to irritate my wife and I. I wonder how CleanFlicks, and the like, give back to the studios? Does the studio see any proceeds from the rentals? I wonder...but of course I'm not sure if the studio gets a proceed from Blockbuster either.

I'll have to bug my father in-law to use his Satellite to watch that documentary.

Continue discussing, all....it is an interesting topic.

Just a quick question…

Anyone ever run into legal problems over their fan projects? I’m especially interested in questions of legality surrounding the documentaries such as DELETED MAGIC and BUILDING EMPIRE. Specifically, I was impressed that they guy who did DELETED MAGIC used his own name on the project.

Sure, disclaimers galore can be placed on them in attempts to prevent profiteering, and can not charge for the project, but that really doesn’t solve the questions of legality.

The reason I ask is I have a small team trying to embark on a project that will put the ‘A Musical Journey’ DVD to shame, and it may be a problem involving both LFL and Sony Classical. It is also quite an original project, and most likely doesn’t fall under the category of preservation or fan documentary projects.

Just curious what everyone’s thoughts are, or if anyone has received cease and desist orders from Lucasfilm.

As for the MagFan/K Smith comparison- there's not too many ways even the most creative 'fan-editor' can make pacing and dialogue choices. Oh they *can* be made, but unlike the original edit job you don't have the luxury of multiple takes and extra shots so I don't see that you can really draw an easy parallel.

Thanks...I'm not a moron...I realize there isn't access to raw daily footage.

The subtitled dialogue is what I'm referring to. Most of it is pretty terrible and could use a lot of rewrites. It certainly wasn't written by a "writer"... some of it looks like reject dialogue from cable access.

Some people actually still think MagFan is Kevin Smith?

No offense, Mag...but Smith is much better with dialogue and pacing. I think a Smith cut of the film would be much better.

Like I said, Mag...no offense meant. I actually liked quite a few of your ideas. I think some further editing could be done on both films...and some dialogue re-writes on the subtitles could greatly improve things. Also...some good music editing and dialogue/FX lifting could greatly enhance the viewing pleasure.

Lucas's filmmaking rut
Time
I think the key here is a lack of fresh ideas.

Basically...he's had two THX and AMERICAN GRAFFITI. Both STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES were serial storylines rehashed. Don't get me wrong...he did an incredible job...but it ends there.

I think Lucas' downfall came in owning such huge, innovative companies such as ILM, THX, Skywalker Sound, Pixar, etc. When his personal life went to hell after Marcia left, he griped the reins of his companies tighter. You can see his obsession with control and perfection in his directing. Directing for Lucas is now more of an exercise in creating 'perfection' than an artistic representation from within himself.

I, for one, can't wait to see something new and different from the guy. I think there is a good filmmaker still there...although I didn't really see evidence in SITH of it...most certainly not in the last thirty minutes. It was typical Lucas cut-ups.

Bullshit! You have no clue what you're talking about. That statement is just another example of a disgruntled fanboy trying to take credit away from Lucas for the greatness that is the original trilogy, and bestowing up Kurtz. Why? Because you're angry at Lucas.

Kurtz in no way played a role in the artistic merits of the Star Wars trilogy. Kurtz created nothing, wrote nothing, and directed nothing aside from a few second unit scenes. He is not responsible in any way for the original trilogy being great. He's a producer, no different than McCallum.

This is really what I was replying to.

Lucas probably started getting a big head after Empire and wanted everything done his way. And then after Jedi, his head got bigger. Now he's got a cash cow.

But I'm ranting. Gary says he's seen the 12 episode writeups. And its much different than the way its laid out now.

Interesting interpretation of events...I wonder how close this actually compares to what happened. Sounds pretty good to me.

At this point in time, perhaps. I recall a (McCallum?) quote stating that the film version had to be finished well ahead of time, but the digital version could be changed up to a week before it was released.

That being said, has it been released yet? I don't know...

I have seen the film version twice, the workprint once, and the digital presentation once. There is NO difference. McCallum said that...but there is not difference. NO changes were made. Digital version premired at midnight with everything else.
