In the 70's and 80's "after the bomb" was a thing here in Italy, when they read it everybody knew imediately what it implied (as opposed to more generic sci-fi where humans have used up all the resources or similar plot lines) and it was trendy. I'm not surprised they added it.

The fact is that the pause between "finest" and "families" is there because the Sultan was not happy with his chest of gold items and moved on to see the car, so disappointing Donovan who had expected a much different reaction (what was at stake there is that the Sultan could have not agreed to let them pass into his territory).
However it does leave space for doubt. Furthermore, his lips are unfortunately covered in that moment, due to the Sultan passing in front of him. So, who knows.

About the Hindemburg...

I saw this when it first came out and remember expecting it to be the Hindenburg and then being surprised that it wasn’t. Though I bet it was supposed to be at one point in the creative process.

The ominous music when the Zeppelin is shown can be easily explained by the fact that people associate that type of transportation with disaster, regardless of the specific model of blimp.

EDIT: I've asked these question on an Indiana Jones forum and the ones that do have memories of those moments from 1989 did say that they clearly remember these elements not being there, no "jews" line, no "Hindenburg" name. If it can be of any further evidence, the Zeppelin model used for the film still exists and it has no more details than the ones we see in the film, no Hindenburg stencil.
I think the rumor of an alternate Last Crusade can be easily classified as a legend.

I think what they mean on tvtropes website is that the line was originally in the script and they removed it at the last moment, it might have not being shot at all. I wonder if somebody read it in the novelization and thought it was also in the film.

As for the Indy experience website, they usually just paste information that they find elsewhere (probably it came from the old IMDb), it's not necessarily first hand knowledge.

But if it was indeed in the film, jeez, I wish they had kept it, it makes much more sense.

I never heard of the LC story but now that whole line makes sense. In any case there is no trace of the Jewish reference in the Italian dub (which is always made on the theatrical version and doesn't get touched again for home video, at least not back then in the 90s), so are you sure you didn't deduce that yourself and it became a memory in your head?

I'm finding hard to follow what you are saying about the French version, sorry if my reply could sound generic:

Our offer to make more foreign versions of this film was made on the assumption that at least the German and French theatrical versions would have localised on-screen text in 1984.But since we found out that this is not the case, our work on removing the English text is of no use to anyone but the Italian public.

Any further audio preservation in other foreign languages can be easily coupled with future versions of the kk650's 1080p regraded release, which makes more sense since all foreign versions (but the Italian one) make use of the American master.

So, unless somebody shows up with a 35mm print of the film with other localised on-screen text, I can only declare that this will be an Italian preservation only. We will include English audio from Laserdisc and English subtitles but that's it.

That's not bad at all, do you know where it came from?

Mitch, this release will have Italian transcribed subtitles (what they say on the Italian track is what you read on the subtitles) and English subtitles. For the audio we will have both English and Italian from Laserdisc.

But we will not have Italian subtitles translated from English as all DVDs have, I always thought that to be the most pointless feature of DVDs with Italian subtitles

 That's what we are planning to use. It comes from the theatrical poster but unfortunately they ditched it for any existing home video release.

I have found somebody selling that poster but before spending money for it (it's very very large therefore very expensive) I'm still hoping that it would pop up in a quality high enough to make a bluray cover. So far no luck, that's why I was hoping that some collector of posters on this forum might have it.

An alternate? 

The Italian version is obviously NOT a TV edit but since we have not properly described all the info and material in our hands (mine and Leo's) I can see why one can superficially think that. Sufficient to say that the freeze frame was only on the terminator POV, clearly a scene that the studios never thought would need translated in any foreign version (since it's then said aloud anyway - the "fuck you asshole" line) but the Italian supervisor had a different ideas apparently.

I'm not sure who distributed it here in Italy, it was probably the same company that dubbed it, "C.F.I." of Carlo Marini, which appears in the end credits, but the Orion logo was left where it was, they only translated it (Un film "ORION Pictures Release").

If you are mentioning it as a source of "blank" material, we are quite sorted in that sense, I believe we have everything we need. As for a Russian preservation, it depends if the film text was localized in Russian language. Does it have Russian language appearing on screen?

That would be one of those versions made by TVs for public broadcasting. In Italy, Mediaset also makes use of clean masters (whenever these are available) to redo the text, for several reasons.

Yeah, only the Terminator POV was redone with a freeze-frame effect so they must have had the introduction on a clean master. It's bizzare that Germany and France never did the same. Unless it was only in the 35mm print and never to be seen again!

It's strange that the 2007 DVD from the same company (at least the one released for the Italian market) is different from the 2001 DVD. People must have complained for the lack of the original text, or they were preparing a bluray release already.
