He looks genuinely creepy in this. Definitely up there with ROTJ but in a more undead way.
Well, that’s one positive at least. How about Ian’s performance? In ROTJ it was a nice balance of real creepiness with schlock villain. Again, in ROTS in was too over the top into schlock.
But even that doesn’t explain why the Imperial map from 40 years ago has a hole in it with a dotted line leading to the hole which perfectly fits around the piece reconstructed by Tekka, which also has that line continued to Luke’s island. Like, that map from the Empire must have been specifically intended to find that one Jedi temple, implying that Palps was working on finding it even after he assumed all the Jedi were gone, and it somehow got included in the installation CDs for the Death Star, and it would have been accidentally unrestricted information because even a floorplan of the Death Star detention block is unavailable to R2. And all of this implies that the Rebellion/New Republic/Resistance didn’t have this intel from the Empire even after conquering said Empire, nor did they have even a scrap of data from this region of space which would allow them to triangulate the rest of the map’s position. At this point I’m worried that the Resistance doesn’t know how a telescope works.

My current theory is Exogol Palpatine is the same one from the prequels. ROTJ was a clone being controlled like a puppet, a la Snoke. This would explain why he’s so decrepit and withered in TROS, and why he still has the face scars after being regenerated. My thinking is that Palpatine cannot simply clone a new body and transfer his soul into it, he can only control them remotely using the Force. This explains why he needs Rey. Eventually his body will grow so old (and possibly withered by excessive dark side energies) that even his life support equipment will no longer sustain him.
What do you think?

There are enough spoilers out there for me to form a judgement. And Dark Empire already had the idea that Palpatine needed a non-clone force-sensitive body to transfer his essence into.
Not really related to the conversation at hand, but in October I went to the movies to see The Lighthouse. Not a big deal, right? Well, it was for me; this was the first — and at present, only — time I’ve actually been to the theatres. And I enjoyed the experience very, very much. I got a great seat, the handful of people in the theatre with me kept quiet, and the film itself was excellent.

I’m not really arguing that, but it exists. And people are talking about how it fits in the context of the new films. The fact these movies are 7-9, then it sort of becomes relevant to what the rest of the saga contains. They could’ve not called these new films 7-9, but they decided to make it a part of a 9 film saga. But I get what you’re saying.
EDIT: If they had moved the restoring balance stuff to IX, then it takes the “balance shit” off the OT, making it more like it was before the prequels.

With all due respect: That “balance” shit is PT nonsense. Like midichlorians it should have been jettisoned and ignored.
Most disappointing aspect is easy: it is completely redundant.
Really, what was the point of it all? The ST was compressed into one movie already: Return of the Jedi. So I guess I have to give Johnson credit for realizing that when he made TLJ and killed off Snoke - essentially saying “we already killed the Big Bad Guy 2 episodes ago remember?” TROS undid this and remade ROTJ - thus undermining Luke’s character arc, as well as Anakin’s (for those who consider the PT canon). Rey is now just Luke…only better (or worse - since Luke defeats evil with Faith/Love, while Rey uses lightning). Thanks to TROS the entire ST is just a reboot of the OT. NO POINT!!
I had more to say, but I’m just exhausted by Star Wars right now.
EDIT: the second most disappointing aspect is all the OT.com members who have said they aren’t sure if they like TROS or not and are going to see it again! Many of them are probably paying for Disney+. How about you don’t give the huge corporation any more of your money and just wait until it comes on Disney+ to decide if you liked it or not?

This entire year has been a miserable, depressing experience for me.
Keep working on your “Ultimate” Star Wars treatments. They are looking really good so far.
I agree. The structure and tone are very particular, plus it’s got the special 70s vibe.
It’s wild that we don’t meet the film’s main protagonist until 20 minutes or so into the movie.
What I would’ve done:
The Jedi would’ve been a small religious order, their numbers somewhere between 100,000 & 1,000,000. They would’ve served as diplomats, advisors, and during the Clone Wars, as tacticians (they wouldn’t have fought on the battle field; that’s stupid). The general public would’ve had very little knowledge of the Jedi, and even less exposure to them.
The Sith would’ve either been extinct or on the verge of extinction on an isolated backwater planet. Anakin would’ve been inducted into the Sith religion by the Sith spirits on Korriban. Palpatine wouldn’t have been a Sith at all, but an independent dark side sorcerer.
As always your ideas make way too much sense to ever see fruition. I disagree with the Jedi never fighting. Knights have steeds; which would be starfighters in a Space Opera setting.
The failure of the Alliance was thinking that simply destroying your enemy would bring everlasting peace.
To me, a far more interesting ending would have dealt with reconciliation and reunification. Or, at the very least, acknowledge that there will always be new wars, but there will always be those who will fight tyranny. But I feel like neither of those ideas are really hinted at all. Honestly, I think we still could have gotten the same film generally, but a brief epilogue could have at least implied either of these themes. But unfortunately the film doesn’t come to a different conclusion as ROTJ, which makes this film’s existence less necessary within the context of the saga.
Again, I do think this is a fun film, but I was disappointed what they chose to say (or not say) regarding the big picture.
Remember The Hand of Thrawn Duology? Where the Empire’s remnants broker an honest peace with the New Republic? In my personal canon that is the end of Star Wars.
Warning: those novels contain Jedi who do not possess Force Resurrection or Force Teleportation.
On the topic of horrible ideas in Star Wars, I’d say the concept of cloning in this entire franchise. It creates massive plot holes, like why did Darth Sidious turn Anakin Skywalker to the dark side if he could just easily clone himself and then turn said clone to the dark side?
Or why didn’t he replace Vader’s damaged limbs/organs with cloned parts instead of crude bionics? Or create a massive army of unquestioning Force-wielders?
There are just so many problems with Force-sensitivity being genetic, and this is one of them.
Come now Duracell, all we would need is simple line that says something like “clones of force sensitives go insane” to get out of that. If we can suspend disbelief and accept that The Force is a real thing, then I think we can accept that you can’t successfully clone force sensitives.

And we fans are happy to settle for this now. Can’t wait for Michael Bay to direct the Sequel-Sequel Trilogy!

Exactly. SW for me has always been awesome popcorn movies. Get lost in the spectacle and exhilaration of it for a couple of hours. The only reason I have such strong emotions of it are due to the time I first saw ANH (12 years old) and how that grew as time went on. I’m in my 50’s now and TROS honestly had be so nostalgic for that first viewing and how I felt then that I was tearing up…powerful stuff that Abrams knows how to create for those of us like me. If I had just seen the OT recently or my first exposure was the PT I wouldn’t have felt the same I think.
Star Wars is Lightning in a Bottle - that happened twice (or three times, depends how you feel about ROTJ). It should have been silly…but it wasn’t. It should have just been meaningless fun…but it ended up saying something important that resonated with millions around the world. We should be surprised that it ever was so great, not scratch our heads trying to figure out why it is so mediocre now.
