How would a Star Wars reboot do?
Time

IMO, the business propositions that deserve the greatest consideration are those with a potentially high up-side while having a quite low potential down-side.

If PROMETHEUS could earn so much with an R rating and the difficulties it had, I have to believe that the chances of a couple of SW movies failing to earn back their production costs are exceedingly low.

I would be inclined to want a remake of the basic story-line of the OT and a reboot of the PT.

I don't believe the '77-'80 generation would ever consider any OT remakes to have matched or exceeded ANH or ESB. Curiosity and controversy would be the main drivers for that crowd, I suspect. OTOH, there would be a real chance that the younger generations might see them as equal or even superior.

In any event, if they are produced in a spirit of love, enthusiasm and respect for the OT, I think they could be much enjoyed by nearly all.

The Enderverse (WAS: Finally! Ender's Game emerges from Development Hell!)
Time

I loved the part in ENDER'S GAME that took us away from Ender and told us what Peter and Valentine were doing. The concept of global forums on a network where topics of international concern could be discussed. It really expanded the story (though I can't see how they would have time for that in the film.)

Max Barry created an online game and forums to promote his book and it's concepts called NationStates.

For minimum runtime. Possible entire sequence cuts of AOTC. Probably already considered.

39:50-40:50   most of the stuff with the queen.

50:15-52:58   Obi meets unmasked Jango and kid.

52:58-56:40   most of the romance stuff.

            1:03:40-1:06:20       1:11:15-1:15:15      1:17:42-1:21:34      1:22:40-1:28:00

It might be possible to change Jango's lines when handing the bugs to Zan to something like "Take these, Jedi have trouble sensing them before they are ready to strike."  It could explain why the probe didn't just shoot through the window.

            135-23    135-34    135-56  ;/   170"Double"23  120"kicked up"ANH  170"Double"56 ;/ ;\ 8o 8I

Cutting any of Yoda is terrible, but it does greatly elevate Obi.

Edit: Yeah, Padme should have her own protocol droid, she's a senator, and a different opening would allow both droids on the same ship.

Edit: I think reduced runtime and a new experience are basically about going easy on the fans and giving them something extra. They could prove more popular to those who have access to them, as well. Then there is controversy...

I still think that you could just cut out Vader's arrival in the beginning of JEDI and just start with C3P0 and R2 walking up to Jabba's palace, and leave the reveal of the Death Star 2 when the Emperor arrives.  Vader's arrival to the DS2 adds nothing and is redundant, as we're reintroduced to the DS2 with the Emperor.

Disagree. Vader's arrival and conversation with Moff J sets up the ominous news that "The Emperor is coming here?!". The fear in J's voice, followed by his immediate, trembling resolve to redouble his efforts, tell the viewer a lot about the Emperor.

Could we have it BOTH ways? Avoid the full exterior view? Could push the reveal back to the Emp or even later. I suppose the reb briefing would have to be quick and very general.

Dark Knight Rises - Now that we know the cast
Time

<p>
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; finally saw this.</p>
<br />
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It was the best individual superhero film I've seen. It was slightly ahead of it's time of production.&nbsp; The cast did an outstanding job.</p>
<br />
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It got me to reflecting on why I prefer some of these action movies to others.&nbsp;</p>
<br />
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; There is the loan individual against the impossible forces. Bourne and Downey's IM are a couple of the better examples.</p>
<br />
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Then there is the vision of a small group pulling together to face the overwhelming. It might end with only one survivor, but that one individual is loyal and cooperative with the team in the worst extremity. We seem hardwired to respond very favorably to that spectacle. STAR WARS is the premier example, imo. It is above all Luke's story, but we don't meet him until quite late. It presents individuals and duos&nbsp;converging in common cause. It's divided into duos because the only way to really relate is one-to-one, but there is the overall feeling of growing attatchment to the "tribe."</p>

General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread
Time

I was flipping through channels after the evening news and landed on CN: ADVENTURE TIME. It features a thirteen year old boy named Finn and his ole' dog pal named Jake.

Finn fancies himself a knight and rescues the many princesses while battling monsters and evil rulers with his bold, indomitable spirit and his clever but a bit oblivious wits.

Jake is a magic dog who encourages and enables Finn in his quests.

There is also an androgynous little robot helper with a bit of attitude.

      LOL

This is the problem I have.

While I'd rather have less nonsense Star Wars films have a well defined length.

I'm on the minimum runtime kick because of my experience with TPM3D. It was fun to see Watto and Jar-Jar seeming even more lifelike. I loved the space shots and the sense of hanging out on nothingness.

They seem to have cut the runtime a bit, but it was right around the 90 minute mark when I began feeling restless with a film I had already seen. It must be difficult and a little daunting for parents with young children who have seen the movie, it was for me. There was nothing particularly new other than the 3D.

Fan-edits of "About 96 minutes" might have some attraction. The alternative would be 135s that also offer a very new perspective. As many alternate takes and angles as will enhance the different experience, some quick deleted scenes, and ruthlessly cutting as much as possible of the material that wasn't especially popular amoung the true fans is seeming like the best aproach. The alternate edits and plot points originally considered but not implemented would really shake things up. There were the things that weren't possible in '77- '80- '83, the different directions, Wookies or other creatures on Endor, the alternatives to a single second Death Star....

        6 90s: 123456- 451236- 2,23,3456;/       3 or 4 135s: 12,23,45,56- 23,45,56;/   625314;)

Anyway, there is a nearly seamless transition between "...Just another Bantha chase." and "Obi-Wan, MTFBWY." It would cut a little runtime and also some complaining.

I regard ROTS as a great film. It's like ROTJ for me in that it was a great experience (in spite of some flaws) for the first two viewings, but then got a little wearing in places after that. The time Ani spends brooding and complaining is an example. I'd imagined pre-Vader as a very stoic "suffer in silence" type until he encountered some thing/s he (or anyone else) could no longer continue to endure. There are many husbands, fathers, brothers, and sons who would sell their souls to the Devil if they thought it was the only way they could save their wives, daughters, sisters, or mothers. That impulse, together with the fear of chaos and civil war, is more than enough to readily explain his turn.

I remain old-school very attached to the puppet Yoda. The CGI guy is fantastic, but it's a little like watching Yoda's more staid younger brother Yada. The puppet had a special character all it's own that I don't believe could ever be replicated by animation. I'm sure it will be some time before fan-editors have the capability, but a "Reverse Head Replacement", with the puppet head on the CGI body, would be awesome. There must be a way to mark the position of the CGI head in a guide video and then replicate the position and movement in slow motion with a puppet head. the eyes, lips, tongue, and cheeks could then be tweaked digitally to make it more lively. terrific things are being done here with Jar-Jar's dialogue replacement, maybe Yoda's dialogue could be enhanced.  :)

I suppose AOTC could be reduced by another 20 minutes and the time given to ROTS;/

I like the PT music the most, but an inconsistency is created if OT and PT films are combined;/

I like the idea of seeing what might have been if GL and the editors had selected their alternate ideas.

Linking another movie to ANH would boost viewing of both.

Yeah, I've felt this way since I was a kid. Especially after visiting Greece. Absolutely beautiful.

The modern games could be scheduled during the winter months that are most enjoyable (possibly to coincide with the Winter Olympic games at a mountain location.) The ice rink events could be held in Greece.

They could arrange with the cruise companies to have their ships present every four years, providing tens of thousands of additional rooms.

With each country contributing, they could build an internaional university campus near the site and easily evict the students and their spare furnishings every four years.

They could build a military base close by also for basic training and other units that could relocate or suspend operations every Olympics, making the base housing available. The military could make Olympic security part of it's basic training.

But hey, it's not like there's any need to prop up the Greek economy ;)

The opening and closing ceremonies could celebrate global commonalities instead of national peculiarities.

Instead of the non-national pastels of '84, there could be Hellenistic/non-national Mediterenean colars such as olive, aqua-marine, terre-cotta, salmon and citrus.

Theme parks and studios could locate near the complex.

The water system for the complex could be a dual piping arrangement. Freshwater for cooking, drinking, final rinsing, and a partially desalinated (max. economical) system for washing, cleaning and so forth......

("Three and a half yards and a cloud of dust";)

         I've rewatched AOTC,

It might be possible to get it down to about 45 minutes almost seamlessly. ROTS is a much bigger challenge as it is so packed with needed exposition and storyline.

I'd be curious to see a cutlist for a TG style cut.

About 45 minutes of AOTC and 90 minutes of ROTS for a 135 cut?

ALIENATION: AN ALIEN 3 REBOOT
Time
That's the broad strokes outline.       I'm going to reserve this post for stray thoughts and rememberings related to this project.       ---It could be stated that the Military-Industrial conspirators actually made an attempt on Newt's life.       ---The other android could be Newt's age and have short brunette hair;/ A sort of "Superior to the ole' beat-up Bishop" thing going.       ---Another person about Newt's age but not in Stasis?;/       ---Improvised concussion grenades from small hyper-compressed air or gas tubes.        ---They've purchased ID for Newt.       ---They know some of the conspiritors are out of power.        ---They could have another, smaller colony on another planetoid in the system. this could be large enough to sustain the refugees for a longer period. They would need the ships to come and transfer the population.        ---Ripley could feign blowing up the ship to drive away boarders.       ---Newt could be the instigator of the return? Toned down version.       ---Toned down, Newt could become a ship's officer and go deep in stasis. She could still be younger. The Corporal could go out to the colony on the same transport. He served time in Earth defense out of stasis.       ---They could go aboard another military ship at the end;/       ---It could be revealed early that a ship has a nuclear reactor;/      ---Ripley and Hicks are presumed dead on the planet or Sulaco??       I reach the point where the possabilities multiply. 10,000 significant elements and altering one changes the other 9,999. It's difficult to know which direction to pursue.

       The Colony:

It's a Sci-Fi movie, the colony should have a unique and interesting environment.  Underground? I suppose that could work. A mining colony? Rare minerals? Ties back to the original movie. The planet could have once been volcanic. The geology is such that there are enormous world spanning networks of undergroud caverns and vents. They could have processed a breathable atmosphere. The surface could have a cosmic-ray problem. An hour up without shielding is like an X-Ray, a month is very dangerous. Not enough water to keep the surface covered for long. Water flows down in underground springs and waterfalls to underground pools and lakes. Vast caverns and narrow vents everywhere.

ALIENATION: AN ALIEN 3 REBOOT
Time

The rest goes according to formula...

Chaos by the landing platform. They could have the fathers of children and their mothers who are yet to be evacuated provide the security around the pads for some "humans turning on each other" action. It's a descent into hell. Scientists of the company. Opposing groups. The planet had a loose militia to discourage small raids from other human powers.

Bishop could come down here or later. The other android could be there. Newt would have to be drawn down and stuck. They could go on missions to rescue stranded families. It would all end with them making it back to the ship. They help each other against at least 3 aliens who have gotten aboard from another shuttle.

This would be between 105 and 120 minutes, so it's not as though there'd be any shortage of material ;)

With emphasis on the WWII analogy and the fact that these are not poor put upon creatures who are only trying to live in peace on their own homeworld,  I'd be inclined to stick with a Libertarian versus Neo-Marxist divide (or at least I'd be too tired to try to find anything better;) The people who founded the colony might have had a get-away-from-it-all ideology. The N-Ms might be some descendants and recent immigrants sick of the company store. If there are going to be colonists, they have to have character and conflict. Polar extremes. They both should make good points and both be catastrophically wrong.

The Libs created a Wild West environment with drugs and prostitution surrounding their families, overdependence on the company and the idea that they can do whatever they like and be totally unprepared to deal with problems with their isolationist loose little militia. The NMs try to believe that their program would lead to anything other than an unworkable, Orwellian totalitarianism. They try to believe they can live in peace with any system other than Free-Enterprise and greatly admire the Marxist nature of the hive. These opposites could be embodied in their respective leaders for quick presentation. Both would die gruesomely, of course ;)    Message serves the story- NEVER story serves the message!

ALIENATION: AN ALIEN 3 REBOOT
Time

This story line was developed out of an earlier iteration.

In the first version, the derelect is destroyed and the ship heads home. Along the way, there is a distress call from another company owned colony. The ship automatically wakes Ripley and Bishop and they go to answer. Once there, they wake Hicks and fix him enough for action. Bishop is also repaired well enough to help. If Newt's appearance was too different, she could be left in stasis.

They take on refugees and go down in the dropship to save more and get stuck on the surface. Once there, they learn that the company has obtained eggs from the derelect and it has spun out of control. The usual festivities, and it comes to the climax.

Earlier, shortly after getting stranded, they come across an atmospheric processor. They express concern that it could blow and are told that it is a different type and that nothing that could detonate atomically is allowed on the planet because of the composition of the atmosphere. Hopefully, this little exchange passes by quickly as just concern about being caught in another meltdown. Hopefully everyone has forgotten about the destruction of the derelect at the start.

All the settlers are evacuated as confirmed by their personal locators. Ripley gets desperate at the climax and manages to launch a nuke while in the weapons bay of the Sulaco (possibly while an alien is crawling on it;) and the entire company owned planet goes up in flames.

ALIEN featured the destruction of the company ship then blowing the creature into space. In ALIENS, the destruction of the company processor and then blowing the queen into space. A3, as the culmination, would have to top that and cause the company more spectacular damage. They owned entire planets. I remembered the concerns of the early '40s.

There is the ALIEN style and the ALIENS style. This first version of the iteration in ALIEN style would have had Hicks or Bishop and probably both dying. I gave much more attention to ALIENS style.

More and more it started to seem like the 18 year old Newt thing was the way to go. ALIEN style seemed more and more workable, but I still prefered ALIENS style. I gave very passing consideration to other crewmembers.

By the time A:RES came, I moved to ALIEN style and finally settled on the storyline. It featured 18Newt and taking the Sulaco deep. Hicks would sacrifice himself for Newt and maybe a friend, Ripely would sacrifice herself to stop the company from taking the aliens offworld and Newt would return to Sulaco and blow the planet.

That done, I went back to ALIENS style to see whether I could do better.

I still lean towards ALIEN style, but I might not be thinking like a movie marketer ;)

Prequel double feature?  90 minutes each? Reduced time and reworked?

Eliminating the "Ani on The Council" subplot would save time. He could go to see Palpatine and cut it off soon after "I need your help" Change dialogue a little. Skip the Council stuff. Distant shots of them walking through the temple corridor and then start at "I'm on your side- I didn't want to put you in this position. Maybe after changing Ani's "AND?!" to "What?". He's just a spy. Focus most of the concern on saving Padme.

As much as I'd hate to lose the very beautiful night cityscape after the nightmare, the scene could be cut off just after he wakes. Maybe keep a quick shot of him brooding in front of the city and Padme asking what's wrong.

The nightmare vision whem Padme is in the black dress could be moved to the bedroom. The vision then Ani looking out the window wincing then "I found a way..."

Still trying to figure out these viewing order possibilities. 6-90, 12-45? Did I just pull so many one-eighties that I've come full circle? 45 12 36? 12 34 56?

I don't know how much they would be involoved in crime beforehand. It's pretty out there as-is.

A more toned-down version would be that Ripley is forced to get work on lesser ships. Newt somehow goes along and now she is kept in stasis longer. I'm trying to keep Ripley, Hicks, Bishop and Newt together on one ship. I suppose Ripley could afford to purchase a terribly damaged android that was about to be scrapped anyway.

She might be on a crusade to hold the company accountable and heads out to the colony for evidence. Maybe Hicks was badly treated upon returning and wants to set things right for his squad. They are on the colony world when things go to hell.
