I’m not sure how I feel about video games and other electronic entertainment existing in the Star Wars universe.

Other than the video game chess Chewie plays?

And the electronic entertainment played on screens at Coruscant bars?

And Padme’s teenage bedroom holo-portraits?

Or do you prefer your SW entertainment to be Luke still playing with his plastic rocketships at 19 going pew pew while his friends play Water-pool at Toshi Station?

Up until the finale of AOTC, green sabres for masters and white sabres for knights/apprentices makes sense. In fact, at the time I was certain Lucas WAS doing that…but then Obi-Wan never used green. Of course, part of that was because white vs white made for a more interesting ROTS.

So it may have just been a happy coincidence up until the end of AOTC.

At least with him being a clone, you can justify that he technically died, but just came back a shell >of his former self.

Exactly. As I said above, it actually HELPS the Star Wars universe’s plothole to show why you can’t just clone everyone who died. It also helps those who hate Midichlorians, since it shows that even the best science-designed force-attuned body still doesn’t work right.

One explanation is that ol’ Palps levitated himself onto a walkway down the elevator shaft after shooting blue ribbons out of his hands and then hopped onto a shuttle.

Another possibility is that his body landed on a catwalk and a Praetorian guard found it and got it out on a shuttle for future reanimation.

Or if you wanted to get really crazy and use clones, the Palpatine on DS2 could have been the clone, explaining his clear insanity.

The absolute worst way to go would have the original body die and bring him back as a clone.

The problem with the “he just landed” answer is basically…it’s mundane. The climax of the the entire trilogy is negated by him escaping like Grevious “time to abandon ship hee hee hee.” It also, from a narrative sense, ruin Luke’s confrontation since Palp was never in danger since he can just walk away even from falling 1000000 feet.

Thematically, it ruins the whole trilogy, since Anakin’s sacrifice is instantly negated. Sort of like how JJ kept undoing Chewie and 3po and Ben Solo’s deaths 30 seconds later. At least with a clone, it thematically fits in the sense of “he came back…but wrong, undoing death has consequences.”

With a clone, especially as it’s degrading from “Dark Side” alchemy, it also explains why the Star Wars universe DOES NOT use clone tech to resurrect people.

It’s not something I’d LIKE to do to ROTJ since I don’t really like the sequel trilogy’s story…but:

There may be a way to change the Emperor’s explosion slightly to have his energy “leave” the Death Star and dissipate into space offcamera. Just an implication that something went off into space that leaves it open to how his “ghost” got into the clone body.

Also, perhaps Lando’s explosion can be edited so the Death Star cracks into solid pieces, and show some of them spiralling off into the nearby planets. This makes Rey finding pieces of it less jarring.

❕ An <strong>Index Of Projects</strong> + <strong>'Info &amp; Help Thread'</strong> for... <strong><em>Star Wars Fan Edits &amp; Other Projects</em></strong> ❕
Time

Is there a thread where editors can ask for suggestions for alternative sources for unique requests? It would be helpful to post a request when looking for something, i.e. a specific line of dialogue, and someone may remember seeing the word in an interview.

For example, people can ask for help in finding:
-specific dialogue from the actors in other movies or behind the scenes.
-specific SFX shots, i.e. from deleted scenes or from a game.
-spaceship shots that could be from non-movie sources, like, say, fan artwork.

People could also post things they’ve found that could be useful in edits:
-commercials that have unique footage with top qualify SFX. Phantom Menace’s commercial, for example, had more Maul than the movie.
-Audiobooks with the original actors
-Video Games with the original actors
-Behind the scenes and documentaries that could have potentially useful edits
-Or even non-Star Wars footage that could be used in an edit.

Just watch Hal’s edits to see what I mean. They’ve added quite a few subtle hints at the true forces behind the First Order, without altering the plot too much. If you want more obvious teasing of Palpatine’s return, watch Poppasketti’s TLJ edit as well. He added Palpatine teases to the entire movie, culminating in Palpatine telling Kylo to find him. Those edits tease Palpatine’s return pretty much perfectly in my opinion, and you should really check them out.

That sounds interesting. Could you please describe how Poppasketti’s TLJ does the hinting well?

I still don’t think introducing Palpatine so early really works, JakeRyan. It raises the uncomfortable question of why Palpatine’s name is never spoken during the entire runtime of TLJ, even among the First Order. It feels too much like a fan edit, and not enough like something intended by the filmmakers.

My suggestion for connecting Palpatine to the first two movies would be just adding subtle hints, like Hal did in his edits. He did a great job adding teases of Palpatine without making it too obvious. Then, you could include Kylo meeting Palpatine at the very end of TLJ, as a “one year later” flash forward. It would be a nice sequel hook to get people excited for the next movie, and it would allow for Palpatine to be introduced earlier without feeling weird.

You are completely right that adding Palpatine to the first movies is awkward. In fact, I think just dropping Palpatine altogether would make a far better TROS.

However, we have to work with what we have…and what we have isn’t very good.

So I encourage everyone to go as radical as possible in this artform.

Let’s see how well things go with Palpatine introduced in TFA. We should never tell people to NOT experiment. That’s how we find out what does and does not work in order to find the perfect outcome. Let’s not think of these as for “the audience” so much as “an artform to experiment with.”

So let’s see how radical this can get:

Episode 7: Rise of Palpatine.

He now openly runs the first order from TFA, and this movie is showing his first strike back, and the mystery of how he survives will be an major plot point of discussion instead of a throwaway.

A) The opening crawl can establish the peaceful Organa government does not know where Palpatine is or where Starkiller base is…but it’s chaos as he just announced his return after 30 years. Perhaps the fortnite recording can play over various peaceful locals, ending with Leia realizing the danger. Use Leia’s TLJ speeches as warnings as they are suddenly about to be attacked in a time of peace.
B) Snoke’s hologram replaced by Palpatine. This one may be hard…
C) Alternatively, make Snoke a clone that Palpatine’s mind was in. A throwaway line of “this body will soon need to be replaced” or something can be cobbled together with Snoke’s conversation with Rey.
D) Establish the rebellion’s knowledge that Palpatine’s main body needs to be replaced is the information hidden on the droids. This will relate to Kylo below.
E) For dialogue that talks about Palpatine, we already have General Pryde as an acolyte. In fact, including his creepy talk to Palpatine early on could help make the mood darker by altering it to include ALL the First Order as acolytes. This establishes where they suddenly all came from–it’s not just another empire, it’s mostly a cult.
F) We also have Phasma. Since we never see her mouth, we can use lots of Gwendolyn’s dialogue, such as from Game of Thrones, to talk about the Emperor’s return. She already talks about “Black Magic” in Thrones.
G) StarKiller base succeeds in taking out Leia’s government. The strange new weapon’s power can be edited to use lightspeed so it vanishes and thus can’t be traced. Footage from ROTS, heroes despair, sad ending.
H) However, one person does track it down…Kylo Ren, using a Sith wayfinder, the original droid mcGuffin. He has come to kill him and take his power…and Palpatine just laughs.
I) But on the other side of the Galaxy, Rey tracks down Luke Skywalker, who admits he went into exile…because he cannot find a way to beat Darth Sidious.

If I wanted to get crazy, I would incorporate pieces of Mandolorian as well. Incorporate the tests they were doing on baby Yoda as an cloning experiment to make a Midichlorian-powerful enough body to handle Palpatine’s spirit. Without a strong enough body, it destroys the host, hence Snoke becoming decrepit so fast.

I just threw this idea together in 10 mins. Not saying I’m gonna do it, but the thought experiment of trying to make Palpatine a major character from the start is fun.

  • The Holdo maneuver is a one in a million,

This is something that needs to be retconned out as well…after the pretty visual effect wore off, everyone immediately asked “well why don’t they just ram everything if a smaller ship can take out an entire fleet in one shot.”

The “one in a million” excuse doesn’t work since they can just launch every ship over and over and over until it works. If you only need one sniper to take out an ENTIRE evil government, why waste time with waging war, just keep sending snipers.

Yes, the Marvel comparison is apt as well, but perhaps I wasn’t too clear when the reference to anime. Rian’s approach was very “every serious moment MUST be broken by a joke. Can’t let things get TOO serious for the kids!”

Think like how Dragonball has violent life or death fights…and then cut to a sight/dialogue gag.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwQIs9jNmL4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3OfwZ5L8B0

For example, when Snoke bonks Rey on the head, I remember several people burst out laughing. That’s the kind of uneven bathos that is anime-like: is that supposed to be a serious scene or a joke scene? Is it scary and unnerving that Snoke is torturing her in mid air? Or is it “don’t take this too seriously” like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnrUVOYpuEk

Don’t get me wrong, either, TROS had similar problems (not as many, but similar) being unsure whether it wanted a serious moment or not. A good example is how Rey’s being tortured to death by Palpatine of the climax of 3 (or 9?) films…and we cut to Ben Solo’s one line: “Ow.”

There’s a lot to sift through, but the Kylo lines I mentioned in particular are in AUDIO > VO > DX > INGAME > LEVEL16. There are clips in a bunch of different languages but they’re all labeled in the filename.

Thanks so much for doing this!!!

But Yoda was only a joke for one scene in ESB, and he was intentionally acting silly to test Luke’s patience. It wasn’t his entire character for the whole movie, like slapstick Hux in TLJ.

I realized what was so “off” about TLJ’s tone: it felt like the prequels–specifically, Phantom Menace.

I agree TLJ has a different tone than the OT and the rest of the ST, and it’s a fact Rian’s a bigger prequel fan than anyone except maybe Kathleen Kennedy, but I wouldn’t really say it’s similar to TPM or either of the two prequels.

I was specifically referring to the forced humor of TLJ, which is why I said it’s most like Phantom. And even Lucas knew better than to ruin EVERY serious moment with a Jar Jar joke. An example is Jar Jar acting silly at Shmi’s dinner table with his Yoshi tongue, Qui-Gon then ends the nonsense, allowing Anakin and Shmi having a serious dialogue exchange about the dangerous Pod Racing uninterrupted. TLJ, on the other hand, has serious moments, like Luke meeting Rey, broken by little quips. Their serious first talk: “Where are you frommmm…no one’s from nowhereeee…OK FINE THAT IS NOWHERE. Ahem, serious mode…whhhy are you here…?”

It’s like…anime. I like anime, but it’s horrendously rife with “serious moment…then you MUST break the tension with sight gag/dialogue.” I’m betting Rian must be a hardcore anime fan.

The best edits I’ve seen of TLJ were those that removed all of those awkward moment-breaking jokes. Anti-Cringe was pretty good, too.

I wonder what would happen if someone edited TLJ the other way, embracing all the comedy and cutting down the seriousness as much as possible.

Always found it weird Lucas did NOT do anything like that with Anakin when introducing him. Having the most mythological important character’s first visual appearance walking around a shop seems so mundane.

Luke’s first appearance was pretty mundane too. I think it was intentional in both cases, to show that greatness comes from humble origins.

No, sorry if it my meaning wasn’t clear. I didn’t mean storyline wise. I meant imagery and theme wise, which are Lucas’ talents.

There was no “boom boy” scene for young Anakin. Like having him stare up at the twin suns, an extremely fitting and appropriate parallel to Luke’s iconic scene, yearning for more. Luke has a lot of iconic imagery associated with him; everyone knows the Binary Sun theme by heart and seeing him stare up into space. There was nothing like that with kid Anakin in Phantom.

Part of the problem of the prequels was that Anakin wasn’t that relatable as an archetype. For a “hero’s fall” to be emotionally resonant, he has to actually be a likeable hero.
