Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released)
Time

There are several ongoing issues with this release. It is very complex.

We have at least 3 prints to evaluate. We did a thorough workthrough of 1 of them. It has many issues that were too hard to fix in post production. So we stopped working on it.

We then started working on Star Wars and have been ever since.

Since that time, we've procured 2 more prints. Some better in some areas than others. Integrating all 3 of them will not be easy.

For an example, from the first Kodak print, here is a small video of the cleanup that was needed for a few frames, this took quite awhile to do.

The rest of the film was like that for most of the reels.

We do have a hybrid version that was watchable, if you read the review of the screening. But even that has many issues, and is quite far from being in release condition. We'll get to it, once we are ready to tackle it.

For the time being, many can enjoy seeing the current effort that went into what we have so far.

I feel this is pertinent qoute from 'none':

This is a rather miraculous project.  You don't just overnight piece together an outfit who have this knowledge base and expertise.  Following the headlines for the recently rediscovered Black Angel by Roger Christian, for that project it was people inside major companies who stepped forward to do this same type of work.  The number of people with these types of skills and time is small.  Most of us who have been around these parts for a few years know (but definitely don't like) the speed at which projects and the group knowledge base advances.  One way to help is get involved, learn these skills and contribute even in the smallest of ways.

Not everyone has seen the content. Not everyone was on the blog. Team members have come and gone from our team. This is all new to some of us. We have a long way to go before a watchable version will be released.

Star Wars is the main focus. This is a secondary release, that will be given just as much attention when the time comes. We will not release something subpar for something of this magnitude. We think it's worth waiting for a quality release just like all the major projects that are ongoing.

For those wondering what the first reel we worked with was, it was a 11 minute clip of Reel 5, that was faded very red.

I don't think anyone would want to watch the movie this way though. We will be posting what a slight color correction would look like. This matches what a lot of the outtakes and deleted scenes from the ebooks look like.

Here is the full Reel 11 minutes of 5:

Keep up the comments and thanks for the compliments. We have a lot more to show including many video clips. Remember, this is a very early, rough correction. We'll have some comparisons from the early print we have. The current print is not nearly as faded, and provides the best reference. We'll have more pictures from that also:

None of this stuff looks like it needs a lot of colour correction. Dirt & scratch removal, certainly, but there's not much fading/excessive contrast...

These are the color corrected versions from the first faded Kodak print.
