Many of the troublesome scenes from the LPP are the dark ones. These do not have a lot of contrast in them.
In the preview, they are just cleaned. We are in the process of replacing them with better quality shots.
One of the major scenes was the sequence when R2D2 goes into the valley and gets captured by the Jawas.
This scene had a lot of artifacts, and did not compress at all in the preview.

Check your media player. VLC is bloated, but works fine for most people. Mplayer might be a good alternative.

As you can imagine, it's taken a few years of hard work to get to this point, we currently have about 90%+ of the movie cleaned, and are finalizing the rest of the clips and replacement shots.
The LPP was already a hybrid of Eastman prints (for the Crawl, and also the Han Shoots First scene), so we are only enhancing some of the shots that look very dark, or don't have enough detail. This is mainly the shots with starfields and a few others. Possibly some interior sandcrawler shots, and Luke at nighttime.

We do not have a timeframe for the releases yet. However, we are expecting to complete Star Wars first (possibly a few more months), and Empire Strikes Back will come after that.
If there is a good response, we will also post Reel 3 when it is ready.

Right. It is important for the Trilogy, regardless of its quality. We've wouldn't have considered it, but since we acquired the resources, we will be including it.

We're not saying we hate the movie either. However, we only have so many resources, and those are definitely directed at the first and second movies respectively, since those are our priority.
Return of the Jedi, is not being neglected. It is placed lower on the priority list, because it is the best condition, and requires the least amount of work.
Although we did release Empire Strikes Back out of order, that was a Grindhouse version. We are trying to release the trilogy restored chronologically, so Jedi would be third anyways.
The lack of a Grindhouse version was explained before, as the condition of it does not warrant a release as such.
It's good to see a few people stand up for the movie, but that follows the general consensus about the demand for it.

That's the 16mm version of Empire Strikes Back you're talking about, referred to earlier, or another.

The scene you are referring to is when Luke opens the cell with Princess Leia. Comparing it to the 35mm Stereo version, there doesn't seem to be a difference.

There are a lot of interesting things in the deleted scenes. But you have to watch all the way through, and pay attention to the lesser details, and not just the main characters.

True. The versions released of Return of the Jedi, have the least issues, so the only remaining one is to restore the original scenes back in, which won't be a problem.
As mentioned in the other threads, we do have 4k sources, that will be downsampled to provide the basis of the restoration. There is already plenty of detail in the shots, as shown from our previews, screens, and short clips that are up.

This cleanup and restoration is a separate project. Mostly, it arose due to convenience, and as a test of the cleanup to show the results to people. This was on the side, so as not to be a distraction away from the restoration of Star Wars.
The best preservation will be the one using the FUJI print which is slightly faded and has the least noise and artifacts.
That will be done on it's own timeline, and by different members.
Ultimately the source will be in 4k, and downscaled, due to practical reasons. The same will be done with Return of the Jedi. We will not be releasing Raw scans for any of the films, because it's too unwieldy to distribute.
These will be the highest quality restorations of the movies to date. Since there is only one other project that will be working on them at a later point.

This print is an LPP print, which means low fade positive print.
All the other Eastman prints have a dark red tint to them, we have posted an 11 minute sample of Reel 5 which shows that.

Yes, the original matte lines and boxes are visible in a lot of the shots.
