Star Wars 1977 releases on 35mm
Time

Thanks for the samples Poita, we took a quick take on some cleanup, and besides stabilization, the shot in Ben's hut came out pretty good.

Here are some fun frames from that sequence:

Time

Please, include all the extras. Take your time, and don't be rushed. We've waited this long, and everyone can wait further for it.

At this point, we can wait as long as it takes to get it right, and yes, Jedi is longer:

Time

Different Team members work on different portions. Most are concentrating on Star Wars currently. These cleanup efforts on ESB are the results of testing on machines in our renderfarm.

Its not going to take to much effort to finish the rest and fine tune, but we don't want to allocate too many resources to it.

Status

- For Reel 1, fixed starfield shots

The red blotches and areas will not be corrected, as that is inherent to these clips. We currently don't have the resources to do too much further correction, especially when we have a superior print that will be restored.

There, are many, many more areas of improvement needed. We only mentioned the main ones that are still being addressed.

If you you look further, there are quite a few scenes. No one has really mentioned any of the other areas, besides starfields.

Idea & Help Wanted: Making of Star Wars 16mm Library Rental
Time

Just finished checking out the 16mm of - The Creatures from Revenge of the Jedi.

It might have some scenes that were not released before, we will check. The quality is very good for the condition that it is in.

It's pretty grainy, but not that distracting. We will be doing some light cleanup on it.

This version is about 11 minutes long.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Here is a timeline of important dates and formats:

==============================

And about film

=========

Those who could afford such luxuries could buy a 16 mm or 8 mm film projector and rent or buy home-use prints of some cartoons, short comedies and brief "highlights" reels edited from feature films. In the case of the 16 mm format, most of these were available with an optical soundtrack, and even some entire feature films in 16 mm could be rented or, at a steep price, bought. 8 mm films almost never ran longer than ten minutes, and only a few were available with a magnetic soundtrack late in the life of the format; the rest were silent. The Super 8 film format, introduced in 1965, was marketed for making home movies but it also boosted the popularity of show-at-home films. Eventually, longer and longer edited-down versions of feature films were issued, increasingly with a magnetic soundtrack and in color, but they were quite expensive and served only a small niche market of very dedicated or affluent film lovers.

Blu-ray has failed, because it has not replaced DVD's, or become the primary format for most releases. Digital releases have, and will overtake it.

Please comment, if you have been previewing the reels. There are still some fixes that need to be made:

============================================

- The tail of Reel 1 still needs work, in the last few frames.

- Starfield shots

- In some of the snowspeeder shots, rocks disappear and reappear briefly.

- The entire Luke vision with Darth Vader, has a lot of dark spots, and still needs cleaning.

If you notice scenes with a lot of noticeable noise, or grain, those will probably remain the same. But if there is dirt in them, please mention which scenes by description and time (min:sec).

Thanks

Time

Thanks for the comments. As we mentioned:

------------------------------------------------------

This preview is just that, an early preview of Star Wars Reel 1:

*******************************************************************************

- Various shots have different aspect ratios. They will be consistent later on.

- NO Color Correction has been done on the remaining parts. Some shots are very dark,

and will be replaced, along with the starfield scenes.

- Slight cropping has been done on the clips.

=============================================

As you noticed, the glue frames have not all been cleaned.

Crop it further, and then watch it, and you will notice a difference.

Thanks

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Any new format beyond what is currently out, is pointless when it comes to requiring new hardware. Specifications are fine, but since there is hardly any difference to most consumers, the new formats will fail spectacularly, just as most HD formats, such as Bluray have.

You can only re-invent the wheel so often, before people stop caring.

Yet more pointless formats:

========================================================

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/behind-screen/fox-unwraps-first-four-ultra-802631

Fox Home Entertainment is releasing its first titles in Ultra HD resolution with high dynamic range (HDR): Kingsman: The Secret Service, The Maze Runner, Life of Pi and Exodus: Gods and Kings.

Additional UHD with HDR titles are expected to follow in the coming weeks. The initiative is led by Fox Home Entertainment and the Fox Innovation Lab, which has been experimenting with UHD with HDR mastering.

As previously reported in The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox recently decided to make versions of all of its new and recent movies in UHD with HDR, the biggest commitment to date on the content side.

The new titles are part of a beta launch, through which consumers can purchase these movies on M-GO and download them to their Samsung Video Pack, for viewing on Samsung SUHDTVs, which support UHD and HDR. (Fox previously supplied clips from Pi and Exodus for Samsung demonstrations).

Fox intends to support additional HDR formats as the hardware enters the market. For instance, Ultra HD Blu-ray players are expected in the market during Q4, and Fox is also planning to support this format at launch.

High dynamic range — meaning a wider range between the whitest whites and blackest blacks in an image — is viewed by many Hollywood tech leaders as the key feature that will create a more noticeable picture advancement for viewers, certainly compared with Ultra HD resolution alone. But while many tech industry leaders are in agreement on taking an HDR path, the challenge is how to implement it while sidestepping a potential format war.

Efforts are underway to standardize HDR. Among them, studio and manufacturer coalition UHD Alliance — which is led by Fox CTO Hanno Basse — is working to create an agreed-upon, consistent and interoperable HDR quality specification for home entertainment.

When did you sense a disturbance in the Force?
Time

If it weren't for the Special Editions and the Prequels resurrecting the franchise, none of us would be here.

There would be no OT forums, there would be no projects, there would be no discussions. There would be a few bootleg DVD's, and probably some laserdisc transfers being traded on ebay or some science fiction forums, but that would be about it.

Star Wars was dead. Period. Yes, there were some books, and comics and maybe a few games. However, compared to the financial success it has become now, it would have languished away in obscurity.

You are probably too young to remember the impact that Star Wars originally had, but after it's initial success, and subsequent decline after the other two movies, it needed to be brought back. By the way, if you were around then, Star Wars fell into that popular, but mediocre category for many people.

It's fine if you wished the movie had remained an obscure, but well received film. But if it weren't for the brilliance of George Lucas and Lucasfilm, we would not have such a rich universe and so much material to enjoy. It's selfish to want to have something this creative, and artistic all to yourself or a small group to enjoy.

Trying to retroactively change history or the past is futile. Better to move onto the future, enjoy what we have, and preserve the rest. Complaining about the quality or success of the franchises doesn't change anything. People will flock to the movies regardless of what you think.

We look forward to all future releases, and enjoying all the versions that have been released.

What is your home theater setup for watching Star Wars movies? (or what equipment would like to get if you could afford it/or dream setup?)
Time

After watching content on 16:9 screens, TV's and monitors, and going to an ultrawide, there is no contest.

Especially, as you mentioned, when watched in the dark.

For some people, there's no going back, now that there are very reasonably priced alternatives.

Also, for video editing, audio editing, and multiple windows. Such as comparing 2 scaled versions of video, frame by frame, there is no contest.

If you are only viewing content, then it is probably not as good a reason to get one.

Never. The Special Editions brought back interest in Star Wars, which was dying off. The prequels retained the popularity, and the Clone Wars and further shows have solidified them.

We look forward to preserving all the Special Editions and Prequels on film in the future. If it weren't for them, most people would not have retained their interest in the originals.

Does anyone have a widescreen TV, or monitor. We are previewing a lot of our work on them. LG has many models that are 21:9 aspect ratio.

They are very affordable, and work excellent when watching movies in the correct aspect ratio. They usually are 2560 x 1080p, or 1440p. Which is not quite 3k.

There are other brands of them too.

The ESB Deconstructed files, although not the original source files, is basically that. Quite a few people (about 70) have downloaded that.

You might want to look into that. We have also posted sample files for cleanup, but have not heard of anyone attempting their own projects, or work on any of them. There was one person that did some color correction to it, but that was only on still frame images.

Currently, the main focus for most projects is on laserdiscs, and enhancing GOUT, and other sources which are easier to work with.
