Info Wanted: Best ROTJ preservations/reconstructions
Time

From the 2 workprints we have, and a possible third one eventually. Along with a few replacement reels, we've mentioned that Return of the Jedi is already in very good condition, and will not take much of an effort to restore.

The cleanup is fairly simple, and wouldn't take much time. The color correction will take much longer, and that is what would hold things up.

Again, it's last on our list of priorities, and we're not planning a Grindhouse version since it's not in that condition anyways.

Eventually, a better version will come out, and we might highlight some scenes once Puggo's 16mm comes out.

As far as detail goes, maybe not every scene is up to the Blu-ray level, but most easily are. We have posted 4k screenshots in our thread, and other sample downscales which have plenty of detail in them, along with shots from replacement reels.

Info Wanted: Question regarding 'Jurassic Park 3D'... (and info)
Time

Took a preview of the print:

======================

- The first reels colors look off, tones do not look natural.

- The colors get better near the middle, but again vary at the end.

- There are some frame jumps and skips.

- Damage, while minimal, appears throughout the film, and especially at the heads and tails.

- The dark scenes seem to have pixelation or artifacts in them.

===========

- Both sound mixes seem rather low in volume, even when turned up to maximum in MPC-HD.

- Hard to hear some of the dialogue at times.

Overall, a good rough first release.

=====================

Started cleanup, split movie into 4 parts. Should be done with a first pass next week.

We will be removing cue marks.

No current color correction will be done, just cleanup work.

Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released)
Time

Status update on ESB V3.1

==========================

Switched to work on Reel 2, 80% complete.

This was to get the reel with the most work out of the way, and to be able to quickly finish the final 2 reels.

Also, once Reel 2 is done, we can assemble a test workprint of all the Reels which should be about 90% complete. This will not have color correction done to it.

If you're interested in checking it out early, leave us a comment.

Update on the status:

===========================

Reel 3 is 95% complete and cleaned.

Reels 5, and 6 have very little damage, and should be done next week.

Reel 2 will be worked on after that.

===========================

Reel 1 had more cleanup done to the crawl, and more scratches eliminated.

===========================

Since there is not much interest in seeing the whole reel, we will just post a few highlights from it.

Here is the Vader and Emperor scene:

Star Wars 1977 releases on 35mm
Time

Thanks for all your support Poita. Get better soon. It doesn't take that long to clean up these short samples.

The second one took longer, but that was due to some frames, which took longer to fix, and looks like a jump in the frame:

===========================================

The cleanup came out pretty good, but with a lower bitrate, the dark areas have a lot of compression artifacts.

Here's a comparison of the first few minutes of the films. Ours was not restored, so there is a large difference with the faded Eastman crawl.

But this will give you an idea of the cleanup involved.

What is your home theater setup for watching Star Wars movies? (or what equipment would like to get if you could afford it/or dream setup?)
Time

@AntcuFaalb

Seems like you've switched to Pioneer, from the LG TV you mentioned earlier in this thread.

And gone up to a 50" (also increased from 36" TV).

Have not heard of ZVOX before, but it got good reviews, and looks easy to install for people that want a streamlined audio solution.

Do you have any opinons about it.

Thanks for the replies.

Star Wars - watch parties - are you planning one? previews/videos
Time

Good to know, that people can still get excited for the new films, and appreciate the old ones.

It's fun when a large group of people get together to experience the films they've cared for, for so long.

It was like that, at the 2 screenings of the films.

Hopefully, it will be like that again, when we are completed with restoring them, or when we screen them.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Once DVD's came out, they matched Laserdiscs in resolution. And with remastering, at times, better quality.

So there was no high-end at that time.

It's true that Bluray might not have intended to be the replacement for DVD, but it still was a newer consumer format.

Since 3D video has failed to launch also, media and hardware companies are always pushing new formats.

That's why Ultra HD BD, will require new sets, and players.

The beauty of the digital format is that, you can upgrade your monitor, projector, or TV when you wish, and gain benefit from it, accordingly.

The consumer race is over, only content creators care about increasingly high resolutions, and mastering issues.

Thanks for all the feedback on hard drives. That will come in useful.

We are continuing the comparisons of Laserdiscs with the SE, and our uncorrected print here:
