Changes in 2004 DVDs

If anyone's still interested the Bits has some more info on the DVD extra's:

We've got a little bit more Star Wars news for you this morning. Variety is reporting that producer Kevin Burns has been tapped to create the new feature-length documentary on the creation of the Star Wars films for the upcoming DVD release. Other such projects Burns has been involved in include the DVD documentaries Cleopatra: The Film That Changed Hollywood and Marilyn Monroe: The Final Days. Given that the set streets in (almost exactly) 6 months, Burns had better get busy. You know... I wonder if someone else wasn't already working on the documentary but fell out of favor, making Burns a replacement. That's just my own speculation, however I find it hard to believe that work wasn't already in progress before now, what with schedules being as tight as they are. It's either that, or Lucasfilm hired Burns months ago and is just announcing it now. Anyway, I imagine a lot of people will be curious to see what Burns comes up with. It's safe to say, there's a LOT riding on this release for fans.

Well I'm not exactly looking forward to the SE release, but that last bit of speculation on why the docs may be behind schedule is kinda interesting. No idea if there's any truth to it, but it does seem kinda close to the deadline to me. Could it even be a spat over whether the doc should emphasize the creation of the original OT (whose technicians and their work have been literally rubbed out) or the SE (stuff on the new CGI only)? I mean does anyone really still care about how the CGI 'improvements' to the SE were even made any more?

Discussion: Non-SW Toys
Time
Hmm, actually I mean both.

In the realm of comic literature and specifically the fantasy genre, this really is the best trilogy of all trilogies. If you're a fan of deft characterization with high drama, sprawling epic plotlines, but also small intimate stories and relationships with a hefty dose of smart humour and slapstick amidst the dramatic LOTR-style battles, then I just can't recommend it enough.

I've been waiting over a decade for the story to end and while I'm waiting with anticipation, I also wish it would never end. The three sets of three trade paperbacks is almost complete with the 9th volume collecting the final issues should be out in the next two months. I can't believe it's going to be over soon.

Star Wars on The Simpsons
Time
Yeah I loved this episode. Of course I love pretty much every episode... The ep 1 parody was a little behind the times, but still funny. I haven't seen that South Park one though. Ah, If only the following were true

George Lucas: What are you doing here?

Lisa and Bart: We come from the real world. We're here to tell you that your movies have lost they're way.

GL: No they haven't. My characters are getting better all the time, now that we've perfected digital eyelash rendering.

LB: Better technology doesn't mean better storytelling.

GL: Well, now I know you're crazy.

LB: Wait, before you have us killed, hear us out.

GL:I will wait 10 of your earth seconds.

LB: Your early movies are timeless classics. Please Mr. Lucas, go back to what made your first films so great.

GL: Your right. I'm going back to my roots. Plots and characters lifted from westerns and samurai films. To the video store!

This way, at least there could be hope that Ep 3 could be really good. In any case, the Simpsons have shown us the way. George Lucas can be reasoned with! (Psst, nobody tell Jimbo though.)

I could buy the SE Trilogy. Come on people, would you rather have nothing?
Don't think I'm biased toward SE, I not. I love the ORIGINAL trilogy. I don't like what Lucas did to "improve" SW but I can put up with it. The changes aren't horrible, just different.

Oh dear no! Say it isn't so, say it ISN'T SO!

Ok I thought about it, the changes to SW are horrible, awful, and wrong.

Whoa, you had me frightened there for a moment. All is as is it should be then...

Law and Order is running stronger than ever! It also has 2 spinoffs L&O: SVU (Special Victims Units) that deals with hyper sensitive crimes like rape and missing children, and L&O : Criminal Intent which looks at crime from a psyc/profile point of view. All three are quite good with SVU being the most dramatic and the original as the most topical. CI is entertaining but kind of cartoony with too many criminal mastermind storylines (ala silence of the lambs).

Crossing Jordan is about Boston's city morgue forensics investigators. The plots are okay but it's not a police procedural like CSI, it's really more of a character drama and how their work affects them and their developing relationships. Its a fun show with nice comedic touches among the more serious and darker episodes.

What shows do you prefer? All the chee-tos are getting me thirsty, can I have some pop Gundarkhunter?

Make Original Trilogy DVDs available through originaltrilogy.com

It was an experiment to save money. They figured HP was so popular that people who were fans would buy it anyway and that those who wanted to bootleg would boot anyway. They were right. All DVD copyprotection has so far proved ineffective and Macrovision is particularily useless. They saved a lot on paying royalties to Macrov. I even saw HP boots in Chinatown a week before the real thing came out...

Info: OT Bootleg DVDs
Time
I finally got my OT DVDs from TR47. Luckily they came undamaged in a bubblewrap envelope. The discs themselves only come in a paper sleeve, not exactly the sturdiest protection but they did the job.

On to the movies... they work in my DVD player, yay! Initial impressions are good. The picture looks great and is surprisingly clean. Right off the bat I'd say they look much better than my Collector's Set VHS. The THX remaster cleaned up quite a bit so it's a better print as well. I don't have the LDs to compare, but I'd venture a guess and say that they're pretty darn close. Specks and dirt are still visible and colours are muted, but small object detail is decent as I can see stuff I never noticed before. It's a soft picture overall, but I suspect it's true to the source. Those used to the new digitally scrubbed transfers of today's blockbusters might be dismayed by the heavy amount of grain, but this what film looks like and how Star Wars has always appeared. Although the picture isn't anamorphic, compared to a set my friend got in Chinatown which is anamorphic, this looks way better. Sharper picture with none of the digital break up and artifacting. I also got some shots from my VHS set, but I can't post them so you'll just have to use your imagination.

However, they're not perfect. Compression is good for the most part, but there are signs of video noise occasionally, with interlace problems and combing. I watched TESB all the way through and there is one shot of scene distortion in the Hoth base control room. The image on the right side of the frame seems to stretch out for a second and then fixes itself and this is definitely not on my VHS. There is also a long black pause (5 secs) during the falcon when they're doing repairs in the asteroid 'cave' before it cuts to Leia welding. I can only assume this was a poorly handled disc change, and there aren't any other such problems during the movie. Nonetheless, these are relatively minor issues and don't impact my enjoyment of the films. I'll post again after watching the two if I encounter any other problems.

The sound is excellent. I've never heard Star Wars like this at home. Thumbs up. The only menu is on the extras disc and it's nice and simple. The trailers look really bad, but I'm sure that's just the shape they were left in.

These discs are good enough that I've decided I can finally halt my quest for the pricey LDs now. In fact I think I will see if I can back them up as I've heard that DVD-rs can die out, and in case anything happened to them I need a safety set, just so I can watch them whenever I want or maybe lend them to my brother. So despite a few quibbles I'm quite happy with the discs and heartily recommend them to anyone who is considering picking them up from TR47. I especially can't wait for this new set that he might have cooking up soon, so until then I can live with these versions of the original OT.

Do you mean the one where Bill and Marty call some guy and tell him that his wife is dead? Yeah, that is pretty close... the Simpsons are pure genius, even years later people are still ripping them off (don't get me started on 'I'm king of the world!'), that or they're prescient which wouldn't surprise me...
