If you’re going to be doing any reencoding, particularly for color alterations, it’s always going to be a better idea to convert it to a lossless (or near-lossless) codec first. H264 is… not that.
I thought CRF=0 was lossless for h264/x264. That’s what I’ve read everywhere on the web at least.

Search: lion king ldrip (which is an xvid avi)

lion king laser (which is a laserdisc transfer to dvd5)There’s also an MKV which appears to be identical quality to the DVD5 version and, unlike the DVD5, is anamorphic. I’d take that over the xvid avi.

Wait, is O Brother on Blu screwed up?! I didn’t know, it’s been ages since I watched it…
It’s got a whole new grade. Deakins supervised it and it looks good (and I think suites the photography better), but it has less of an aggressive sepia tone on the landscape, which is what O Brother was known for, being one of the first films graded entirely with a DI. It’s definitively worth preserving the DVD’s colors.

What’s the state of the Despecialized Edition?

Hardcoded in the TE bluray but not the EE bluray, I believe there are EE only scenes that are softsubs only, IIRC.
My EE Blu-ray collection has hardcoded Elvish subs.
Interesting, seems like the NA release has hardsubs but other reigons do not.
I read in a forum that the USA BD’s have hardcoded Elvish subs but the European BD’s don’t.
Curious, if V1 is a slightly lower bitrate and not much difference in any other way from V3 why is V3 almost twice the size?
